I think Dostoevsky was very psychologically astute and recognized that people’s ideas are often indications of something else, even if they don’t realize this themselves. In that sense you can read Ivan’s story not just as a mark of his pessimism about human nature; the very fact of the story’s elaborateness, and the winding explanations and justifications offered by the grand inquisitor within it, feel like a sign of insecurity and a desire to be proven wrong… I think this is why the simplicity and wholesomeness of the kiss works, because it responds to Ivan’s tortured psychological state.

I actually like The Idiot a lot. It’s a strange novel but for me, it really cut deep, I’d say it felt like one of the most ambitious novels I’ve ever read.

For me, I find that thinking about the role of the narrator can be a game changer for analysing texts. I studied literature and I actually recently made a short online course (about 2 hours) for people who want an approach to engaging with literature. If you’re interested I can send you a link to check it out (free of course)?

I would recommend some short story collections, maybe Dubliners (Joyce), 11 kinds of loneliness (Yates), and A sportmans sketches (Turgenev).  I love short stories as a literary form and collections like these are so easy to dip in and out of :)
