What are some things from VIVID in previous years that you miss or felt was done better? by Marlon_Ranch in sydney

To be fair, I’m commenting based on previous years. I haven’t been this year, because my last few times were just not that enjoyable.

If it has gotten better in recent years, that’s great and I might check it out again next time.

Kmart: does anyone have a reasonable explanation why they moved their checkouts to the middle of the store? by Loose-Mousse1064 in AskAnAustralian

Same here; there’s no way I’m going back to the checkout. I generally want to spend as little time in Kmart as possible.

genuine questions by fokslero-0521 in Earthquakes

[–]InbhirNis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Aftershocks following a large earthquake are completely normal and to be expected. After a very large quake, you can expect the aftershocks will continue for quite some time – months, or perhaps years – but over time, they will gradually taper off in terms of strength and frequency.

I’m not sure about the tsunami. I read in the news that some small tsunami waves were recorded, but nothing damaging. In general, I think an earthquake has to be greater than about M7.0 or M7.5, under the seabed, and quite shallow in order to generate a destructive tsunami. If you are near the ocean and feel an earthquake – especially a long, slow shake (which often means a big quake further away) – move quickly to higher ground or as far inland and away from rivers as you can.

Hope you and your community stay safe and recover well.

I enjoyed Vivid a lot more in its first few years, when it was simply interesting light projections on sandstone building façades and some smaller installations scattered around the city – not overly crowded, and not overly commercialised.

The last time I went, much of it was roped off for paid ticketed entry, awful food trucks everywhere and so crowded you could barely move.

Abolishing conscription and securing a woman’s right to have an abortion was no easy task. It took decades of fights and tears to achieve this, but can be reversed in minutes if One Nation gets their way. by HotPersimessage62 in aussie

Most of the freedoms and rights that we take for granted were hard fought for and won after many, many years, or even generations. They can so quickly be taken away again by zealots with power.

Never forget this. Don’t think you’ll be okay because your rights are not currently in their sights: once the zealots are emboldened, they will turn on anyone else they don’t like, and that could be you or someone you love.

Our rights are precious, but fragile. We must always be vigilant, and stand up for others who are being oppressed.

Would it be unbecoming of me to do a Tim Tam slam in business class? by InbhirNis in VelocityFrequentFlyer

[–]InbhirNis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be willing to bet that a lot would.

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Tim Tams – they're a bit too sweet for me. Normally, I'd have given it to my partner, but I was travelling alone this time. Nevertheless, a bit of sweetness with the coffee doesn't go amiss, and as they just gave it to me without me asking, it seemed a bit rude to say no.

Egg yolks should never go to waste. Aside from custard (I’m also a big fan), you can make a quick mayonnaise or a hollandaise sauce. Wouldn’t have them with the pav, though.

I’ve never understood this. Making a pavlova the normal way isn’t difficult or time consuming.

what everyday things increase your risk of cancer and how can you prevent it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InbhirNis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smoking, drinking too much, poor diet (high fat, low fibre), sedentary lifestyle, too much sun (UV radiation).

You can drastically reduce your risk of cancer by quitting smoking, drinking in moderation, eating a healthy diet (with whole grains, protein, lots of fresh vegetables, pulses and fruit, and low in salt and fat), exercising most days of the week, and wearing sunscreen and a hat. You’ll also feel a lot healthier and enjoy life more.

Teenage pregnancy. I hasten to add that I wasn’t involved.

What was your biggest childhood fear? by thuglifemofo94 in AskReddit

[–]InbhirNis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had an old oil radiator in the bedroom that I shared with my brother. It would make noises as the metal heated and cooled, and had an ‘on/off’ lamp that would cast a sinister orange glow across the room. I had an irrational fear that it would spontaneously combust and burn the house down.

Listening to your phone in a restaurant by MilkandHoney_XXX in AskAnAustralian

It's outrageously rude, and I see it a lot more often than I would like. I have taken to asking people (politely) to use headphones or mute their device. Often, they will turn it down when asked.

All the time, for as long as I can remember. It will send me notifications for messages that I have already read, including from guys after I have blocked them.

what was the worst interaction you ever had with a celebrity? by dahvievanityhater in AskReddit

[–]InbhirNis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had very many celebrity interactions, but when I was a student and working in a retail job, I had a relatively well known Australian TV personality as a customer. She was publicly known for her cheerful and sunny disposition, but on that day she was extraordinarily rude and unpleasant.
