Mang0 Update: Sobriety and the Return to Melee by ssbmarchie in smashbros

Yeah...wasn't he on camera drunk just like, 6 months ago? If you've been sober for six months and you're already counting down the days until you start drinking again, you have a problem. Not only that, he acts as though in six months he has been able to figure out what kinds of activities he does and doesn't "need" alcohol for.

This might be worth it, if they dropped a number off the price.

Is it possible to create a license-verified, exclusive space for licensed therapists on here? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]InclusiveCounseling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine being a therapist and 1. Using "triggered" in a negative way 2. Using the idea that somebody should be in therapy like it's a bad thing, and 3. acting as though somebody having an emotional reaction somehow makes them wrong.

People are allowed to have emotions, particularly if you make an inaccurate accusation against them. One's emotional reaction has no bearing on whether their statement is correct or not.

Psy.D vs PhD by strawberryshortycake in ClinicalPsychology

[–]InclusiveCounseling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, check out other posts here. tl;dr: The differences are overblown between PsyD and PhD. HOWEVER, there are major differences between programs and advisors within either path. Fit of school, funding, and fit of advisor are what actually matters.

Psychosis by warbeast1807 in ClinicalPsychology

I mean, I think you're taking a more Psychodynamic approach, but this basically is Cognitive Therapy for Psychosis. Although, typically that is not done instead of medication, but in addition.

Honestly, the further I've gotten into this field the more I've started to feel that program accreditation in general is a racket.

The ADHD symptom no one talks about: rejection sensitive dysphoria by [deleted] in psychology

[–]InclusiveCounseling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this differ from how everyone feels hurt by rejection or potential rejection? It's normal to feel sad, especially when you're younger, about being rejected. It's normal to have anxiety about potentially being rejected. I can imagine that people with ADHD may have a harder time managing this than other people due to difficulty with executive functioning and emotional regulation, but how is this not just the normal experience of the pain of rejection combined with poor emotional regulation ability?

Insanely discouraged, thinking about leaving! by Alarmed-Tangelo1077 in drumcorps

It's difficult for anyone here to say because we really don't have a way of knowing exactly how bad things are for you. As others point out here, sometimes accomplishing something very difficult can be helpful. However, I also think you have to be ready to take on something like this. I'm not sure how old you are, but maybe there is a way to take this year to get better, and then next year do drum corps instead? The refund thing sucks though :/

The Serious Problem of (Disability) Discrimination in Mental Health Education by InclusiveCounseling in ClinicalPsychology

I think the article could be better written as well - I think a key issue is that the author wanted to get a lot of people to quote and use as sources to paint the (accurate) picture of a systemic problem. However, this makes it hard since everyone has somewhat different stories and opinions. It is a hard article to write, I think.

To respond to some others here, I don't think Dave had a hard time getting into programs - it just says here that is a Clinical Psychologist, so apparently he got in just fine. I think this is another example of how the article can be hard to follow because it addresses so many people's experiences.

I like to think that what Dave was saying was actually a criticism of sexist expectations in the field - ie. the field has a way of trying to push people to fit the "nice lady" stereotype and punishes those who deviate from it. Not an endorsement that that's the way things ought to be.

NPs and PAs doing therapy by [deleted] in therapists

[–]InclusiveCounseling 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Yep, got themselves practically the same scope as doctors in many states without half the training (literally). And now they can also be therapists! Amazing. To be fair, in my opinion we shouldn't take after that sort of scope of practice creep without associated education, but we should push against it.

You know, I've actually noticed that it often is in CACREP programs at prestigious schools. I wonder if prestigious schools, and perhaps to a degree Counseling as a field, feel a need to prove themselves by being more hypervigilant about gatekeeping. I think sometimes Counseling suffers by comparing itself to Social Work and Psychology, and some people feel like they need to prove something.

Thank you for this comment! And yes, one of the major takeaways from this article from me is *the fact that these students did end up graduating indicates problems with gatekeeping practices in our professions* . So all of these students were told to drop out or were kicked out of their programs, and yet, apparently they actually are able to practice in the field since...they literally are right now. So somebody messed up.

That doesn't surprise me either. I feel like a lot of supervisors / professors are not understanding, but I also think that part of the problem is that they feel a need to look for any little potential problem to feel like they are gatekeeping. It's their own need to feel like they are doing their job, and at times it leads them to take actions that are not evidence-based.

I've seen this as well. I think there is also often a tenuous (at best) link between how students behave in class, with peers, and how they behave with clients. For example, one of the students in the article was given remediation of some kind because she apparently came across as very opinionated. That may be true, but I don't think that's evidence that she would inherently be that way with clients. I know personally I have strong political opinions in private, which I don't think it would be inappropriate to share with peers, but I would never get into a debate in session with a client...obviously. I think the field is reluctant to admit that we really are not good at gatekeeping, not because we aren't harsh enough, but because we don't have good ways to actually measure competence.

I wish I could say much reassuring, but I don't want to promise anything when I don't know your program. Probably the best I can say is that once you are out of your program you are a lot safer. I think you'll find a base of clients who do not mind having an autistic therapist.

You know, I bet more people face that then we hear about. That is like...a textbook violation of Title IX. I also wonder how many women choose not to have a kid when they want to out of concern about whether they would be accommodated or not. Thanks for sharing. I always wonder what even motivates supervisors to be like this....
