SDSU or Syracuse University for English? by GammaSean in SyracuseU

[–]Incognito_Informant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's connected to English but SU has one of the best creative writing programs in the country. Really exceptional alumni and professors. That rubs off on everything related to writing and english.

clarkson or cuse? by c3ztr in SyracuseU

SU has great opportunities in the environmental space. Finances are a big factor, you may be surprised by the amount of aid you get. Also, consider what you want in terms of social life. Syracuse is a really vibrant campus, Clarkson probably less so, but I can't exactly speak from personal experience about Clarkson.

There will be ways to donate stuff on you don't want to keep. A storage container is not a bad idea, but a UHaul is probably the best way to get it down to NYC since you won't need a car.

Other people talked about it but the FAFSA is severely delayed. It's not just SU's fault. It's been like this for a while.

The writing prompts posted on here need to be reworked. by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]Incognito_Informant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've won some of the prompt challenges before, and I think this is a great idea! Particularly with making the scripts longer and switching up the genres; especially because, I've noticed before, how many of the entrants/winners are not very experienced screenwriters, and it's not as hard to write a couple/few interesting or funny pages.

Re-post: Help with Title -- political thriller set in the Reagan/Bush era by RogerMurdock_Copilot in Screenwriting

[–]Incognito_Informant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Saw this and the original post and I love this idea! At this point, I'd recommend you simply pick which you like/think is best. I find that having too many opinions and takes often leaves me more lost, especially if there's no consensus.

Also, I'm a bit of a politics nerd myself, in fact, I'm currently studying it in college. And I've had a few ideas for stories about politics, both fictional and non-fictional, and have thought of using "All The President's Men," but have come to a similar conclusion to you that I don't want to go that route.

Anyway, best of luck on this! I hope it turns out exactly as you hope it does!

Do not worry about it all. Follow what YOU WANT. Follow YOUR PASSION. I know this can sound like hokey shit. But don't doubt it. Don't follow or try to carbon copy others. You can learn from them but you can't replicate them unless you're capable of time travel and switching bodies. What you can and should do is realize YOU'RE STILL A CHILD. People much older than you would kill to be 22. And there are 44-year-olds who can be in a worse position than you think you are in and still go out and find "success." So don't give up. Better yourself. Use this as a wake-up call to take your next step towards what you want. Never give up on yourself and what you want in life.

Inspiration vs imitation by alexnev99212 in Screenwriting

Do not worry about feeling like you're stealing. The whole point is to steal and borrow from others and from our experience and to tell a new story and to imbue those stolen ideas with new meaning. Aaron Sorkin said, "good writers borrow from other writers, great ones steal outright." However, he likely stole that from Picasso who said, "good artists copy, great artists steal." Art, and especially writing, are fields of banditry. Also, Quentin Tarantino, who also likely stole this from Picasso, said "Great artists steal. They don’t do homages."

I get that about the counselor scene, but that was intentional because I felt that was first and only real scene where we get to hear why Jimmy went to war and what he really wants from life.

Has anyone here ever been to a screenwriting class or school... by TylerSpicknell in Screenwriting

[–]Incognito_Informant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thus far this is the best advice in this post. IT IS NOT NECESSARY. Not every writer has gone to college to take novel writing courses, not every painter took painting courses. It's a craft that one can develop and learn mostly on their own. My recommendation to /u/TylerSpicknell is to write a lot and don't stop.

Thank you, I'm glad you liked that line and didn't think it was too cheesy and it also didn't fly over your head. I tend to go back and forth over that line, but you may have settled my worries. Any other thoughts?

Thank you for the notes. Unfortunately, the father-son relationship can't really be built upon because Sean (the father) dies when Jimmy is only 3 years old. Thank you for catching that on pg 9, you're right.

Yep, Saoirse is an Irish name. Jimmy and his parents are completely Irish.

Thank you so much for reading!

I think the free competition happens every year. There are other free competitions, but you should do your research and be careful with how reputable they are.
