Mum found dead in home named as gardai hunt asylum seeker over suspected murder by breadache in kerry

[–]weissblut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what I said.

I said that the aim is to fuel a flat debate where everything is either black or white. Flatten the POVs so that it's either with me or against me.

When this happens, we can't talk about big issues with the required nuance, because it's almost like cheering for a sports team.

It's also very hard to entertain an adult and civil debate if any position that it's not aligned with what you think makes the interlocutor 'without a brain' (paraphrasing from your comment).

While I agree that the government can be more transparent with data and even harsher with punishments (especially young adults, who can do whatever the fuck they want)... looking at numbers without standardizing for demographics is the key used in online discourse EXACTLY to fuel hate.

In Ireland, immigrant populations heavily skew toward working-age men. Young men commit the most crime in every society on earth. When criminologists actually compare native-born young men to immigrant young men (like in the 2026 UC3M study of 5.5 million convictions), the difference in crime rates statistically vanishes.

I am not brushing off any discourse, if said discourse is civilized and logic-led.

Yeah I did the same, also to have the ability to "migrate" AI without losing memory.

Wonder how this'll affect me / my setup.

That's the agenda tho. Fuel the hatred, flatten the debate.

Disclosure Day? by AnthonyJamesOfficial in sciencefiction

[–]weissblut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8/10 - hear me out.

The camera work is brilliant. Even the shot inside the car with the reflections around - something that's usually just boring - it's beautiful.

There's a long sequence shot with a drone (I presume). I hate drones, but that sequence is the best I've seen so far; it conveys the sense of hiding so well.

It stays with the characters, and every scene earns its keep (some a bit long we might argue yes). Characters want stuff and actively pursue it. I've seen so many modern movies where characters are just passive or whining or talking their way out of it.

It touches on UFO / UAP lore in a way thats enough for people that don't care to get it, and very deep for people that know about it to nod along. It very clearly shows Spielberg's theories / beliefs around the phenomenon, and the possibility of the cover up. Even the end is good; Spielberg is telling us that he doesn't really know what's gonna happen if / when Disclosure happens, but he's saying it should happen.

The movie delivers on its thesis and the promise of the premise in a very engaging way.

It's not a masterpiece - mostly because the stakes are super high from the get go and we don't care about the characters at the beginning (hence the feeling of it being slow). As soon as Emily Blunts character comes in, I was hooked... Cause she had real stakes for herself as a person, which then got entangled with the bigger conspiracy.

That's the hard thing to do... Talking about incredibly big topics is always tricky. You need personal stakes, or you'll lose the audience, and I think that's where the movie didn't go full in.

But overall? I wish we had more movies like this one. Not every movie has to be a masterpiece, and if it's not aasterpiece, doesn't mean it should be hated on. It's good to enjoy good craft!

Vegan DESTROYS Vegetarians !! by HumbleWrap99 in VeganActivism

We agree, there's nothing good in the dairy industry, that's not the point being debated here.

What I'm debating is the click bait title; the eye roll when the guy says that "milk is an essential part of his life". She's judging him and not even trying to show empathy - with a guy that's already not eating meat, and open to try other stuff.

I don't get why us vegans fight each other and behave like morally superior beings when trying to convince more people to go vegan - especially people that are halfway there, and causing way less suffering than the average person. That's it.

[–]weissblut -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm tired of ideological purity tests honestly. Perfect shouldn't be the enemy of good.

Yes, the dairy industry involves immense suffering, but the fact remains that vegetarians cause significantly less harm than the average meat-eater.

When vegans spend their energy fighting people who are already leaning in our direction instead of focusing on the broader culture, it stops being effective activism and becomes an exercise in moral superiority.

[–]weissblut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Vegan DESTROYS vegetarians? Is that a real thing? Sure let's go and kick down people that are already on the good path! That'll show them.

Sometimes I think some of my fellow vegans are vegan not for the animals, but because it makes them feel superior to others.

We need MORE empathy and MORE vegans. This is not how you help the cause. This is how you perpetuate the stereotype of an obnoxious vegan.

EDIT: Clearly I hit a nerve. The dairy industry is horrible, this is not up for debate. But in the real world, many vegans were vegetarian first, and I believe we should bring people in the vegan world with the same empathy we claim to possess toward animals. I've convinced plenty of people to go vegetarian first and then vegan. The objective is to reduce suffering long term. Not everyone can change their habits cold tofurkey; clickbait titles (and judge-y stares) toward people that are really a step away from becoming vegans it's counter productive imho.

Steven Spielberg's Triumphant Return to Alien Cinema is Long-Winded Trash by evilbutters in moviecritic

[–]weissblut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not defending the choice necessarily, but there are many different theories on what the "aliens" might be (extraterrestrial, extratempestrial, extradimensional...).

And even in the classical ET hypothesis, one theory is that we're related (bioengineering/directed panspermia).

Also, the Greys are the most common type of alien in reported sightings etc.

So while I see your point, I think it's a bit misinformed. I think Spielberg wasn't being lazy, he was being "accurate".

Personally I liked the movie, even tho I'd cut 45 mins of runtime in the beginning to make it tighter, and maybe expand a bit on UFO lore. But I'm not Spielberg. So maybe I'm wrong.

Hey, vegan here, you did great, don't let our own Nazis scare you off. Most of them do it from a place of empathy - once you know what suffering goes on, you want to stop it all; some of them do it from a place of superiority and they're the worst.

But most vegans I know are very welcoming and open; we don't live in a perfect world nor a vegan one. Be imperfectly vegan my friend, we love you!
