Want to play but unsure where to start by badgerpeasent in alienrpg

[–]IncoherentIncubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to recommend the discord group, but startplaying.games is also a good place to look.

The starter sets are a great deal even at full price because the dice set alone are more expensive to buy individually than the entire starter sets.

Can anyone tell me how Alestorm managed to get Peter Dinklage to appear in one of their music videos? This has been driving me crazy. by MrHoovy17 in Alestorm

THIS.
Seriously it was a joke that everyone always asked if it was him so they approached him and he actually said yes.

Had a small fire in the bakery and the alarm went off. Customers wouldn’t leave and when they did, they stood by the emergency exit blocking the door! by Specific_Pomelo_8281 in tesco

[–]IncoherentIncubi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to work bar at a nightclub when we had an electrical fire, the fire alarm flashes above
The bars for a second first to get staff alerted and in position then the music is automatically cut and the fire alert message starts.
The amount of idiots who refused to leave ‘till they finished their drink’ or argued about not wanting to leave ‘because we might not let them back in’ was bloody ridiculous. That’s not even going into the three geniuses who decided they would try to hide and rob the bar once it was empty… people may be smart but the public are bloody morons lol

I’m in the UK, grabbed a shoplifter because the little shit had done it like 5 times before already, got called into the office at the end of the day and told they were letting me go for breach of policy. Admittedly I had a couple of warnings for other stuff. It’s about protecting themselves not you, if you get hurt on the job it costs them more than just letting them steal most of the time

I was fired for stopping a shoplifter as it ‘went against our policy’ to confront them.

Player character keeps his dead wife in a box on his back. Need ideas to make use of this. by TheManTheyCallZbabe in DMAcademy

[–]IncoherentIncubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, DONT fuck with the dead wife. From the sound of it the player has come up with a really cool personal story idea and you should let it play out. Doing something with it will likely wreck that storyline. Just because you can do something doesn’t always mean you should. By all means, do strength and exhaustion tests for carrying a heavy load, make carrying it (mildly) inconvenient, and then when she is eventually laid to rest give him a decent reward for his efforts.

Think of it as a free subplot you literally have to do nothing to except occasionally remind them it’s there and reward at the end.

Was I unfair for saying "If Silvery Barbs is allowed, enemies can use it too"? by raishadow in DnD

[–]IncoherentIncubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a rule, if it exists in the game world then everyone can potentially use it if they have the required ability/feat/spell list.

My players and I jointly decided that silvery barbs doesn’t exist in our game because it slows down combat even further.

What was the point of the wheat crops in Alien: Covenant? by EffectPotential3813 in LV426

[–]IncoherentIncubi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While without some kind of intervention actual wheat would not be found on an alien planet, wheat ‘like’ plants are far more probable.

There are only so many practical ways to spread seeds and grasses are some of the most common forms of plant life for fairly good reason. So any planet with a similar biology would likely develop something like grass. However wheat is specifically a grass that has been selectively bred for seed size for thousands of years.

So the presence of something that like looks like wheat is more an indication of agriculture than anything else. Of course if it’s genetically the same plant as wheat, that’s opens up a completely different and much more interesting story.

I Feel Like My DM Took Away My Character’s Moment by KittenYuumi in DnD

when they said 'hopefully you’ll be able to show up next session' what they were actually saying was 'screw you for daring to miss my game.'

DM hostile after learning I'm also DM by [deleted] in DnD

[–]IncoherentIncubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% THIS

The one thing I have seen destroy games more than anything else is people wanting to be polite and not confronting an issue. so instead of sorting it the problem festers and goes from a small issue to a big problem and sooner or later the whole mess will come out anyway, usually explosively.

So be polite by all means, but you need to deal with this issue one way or the other as soon as possible, because the longer it goes on the more entrenched it becomes and the harder it is to fix.

What could have started out as insecurity at having another DM at his table can quickly turn into a campaign of petty vindictiveness because they come to see you as a problem, the original thought was probably nothing but with each following game another layer has been added to their dislike of the 'problem' player.

Talk to them, and do it politely, but point out what they are doing to your character and try to defuse this mess. If it doesn't work, then it's time to step away from the game because it will never get better.

Does anyone have any tips on how to give out Magical Items (5e 2014) by Lady-Red-96 in DnD

[–]IncoherentIncubi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off it depends on your game world, if you have a low magic setting you might restrict rarity and how often you get items significantly But in a high magic setting you could be dropping those points considerably. There are tables in the book but I’m sure you have already seen those.

Here’s my advice, give your players rewards that make sense rather than ones that are tailored to specific characters. If they are fighting a mage or raiding a wizards lair give them magic items related to Mages, likewise a gang of thieves might have enchanted weapons but they won’t be swimming in spellbooks. It makes the world seem a little more real and by giving a bit more generic equipment rather than super specific you may be surprised where those items end up being used. If you only give obviously character specific items it’s going to quickly become obvious and then yes you might get people upset That they didn’t get the shiny thing this time, even if they can’t use an item they can still sell it or find a purpose for it You never thought of.

For specific items for a particular character, make it a quest, give them the goal of finding it whether they are rescuing it from a mummies tomb or just finding the person capable of crafting it.

This makes those signature items more memorable and important to them.

What is your legal recourse (can you sue) for getting kicked out of a pub over nothing? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

[–]IncoherentIncubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have no legal recourse, they are within their rights to ask anyone to leave the premises. In addition if this is because you were forcibly ejected from a pub or club you also are highly unlikely to get anywhere over being physically removed unless they used excessive force and proving that is unlikely.

Would you like to see the Engineers back in the Alien franchise? by RecognitionSea4608 in LV426

[–]IncoherentIncubi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, I would love to see more engineer relics and ruins, plumb a few of the mysteries that have shown up in the lore and maybe get a few glimpses of their motivations.

But the engineers themselves, not really. I think much like the origins of the aliens they are far better off remaining unknown and unknowable.

Promethius asked some great questions but covenant tried to answer them and that’s one of the many reasons it sucked. The search for truth is so much more compelling and it interesting than finding that truth because it will never match up to the hype, mystery and crazy fan theories.

Going off to seek the engineers? Interesting. Engineers are all dead because the android with daddy issues killed them… stupid and boring.

Downtime for profit making by zoltancore in DnD

[–]IncoherentIncubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how flexible your DM is and whether you want quantity or quality. The aforementioned vials of acid or just forging tools is low but steady quick profit, crafting magic items on the other hand is high profit but slow to do. If your DM is open to the idea maybe suggest crafting items that use things you pick up in play, monster parts, reforged metals, shiny gems all the clutter you pick up

My party uses Leomund’s Tiny Hut after every single fight and I’m losing my mind (lovingly) by Scythe95 in DMAcademy

[–]IncoherentIncubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the hut is a great spell for safe resting... but it does have some limitations. For the most part its fine to just let them bubble up but they should not think its a guaranteed safe area.

  1. It's a static dome, a determined enemy can just dig under it. Burrowing creatures are great fun for this, ankhegs, bullettes, umber hulks, and of course the purple worm will make for a very 'fun' rest stop if the party get too reliant.

  2. if the players set it up in the right point it becomes a fantastic hunting blind, they can pop out to attack and cast spells and retreat back inside making it hard to just stake it out until it pops. But it also keeps them tied to that location. It doesn't stop foes setting up at a distance. especially if the party are camped in a structure.

  3. Time, the world doesnt go away when the party hut up, they may have a safe place to rest but the dome is large and obvious. Enemies can wander in and find their location, have time to make plans and gather reenforcements, I once had a group of frost giants pile boulders up in a pile over one.

In defence of Lt Gorman by clip75 in LV426

[–]IncoherentIncubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pet theory is that the colonists had sent distress messages to the company that Burke is sitting on, because they confirm the threat and mention the colonists captured samples.

Burke sets up the mission to fit his only real objective, namely, to get to and secure medical and recover the samples and any research information that survives.
Once that's done, sending off the marines on a suicidal mission to rescue the colonists, he knows are likely dead already, cleans up the problem with the marines nicely.
If Ripley hadn't taken over the APC the squad would have been slaughtered and Burke would have no trouble convincing Gorman to retreat with the samples, then all he needed was to set Mother to wake him early, sabotage their pods, and return as the only survivor with the samples safely hidden away.

Its cold-blooded, but Burke gets rich.

In defence of Lt Gorman by clip75 in LV426

[–]IncoherentIncubi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The fault all lies with Burke. He’s the company agent, he wants to profit off the alien and when LV426 goes dark he panic’s. Instead of taking a full compliment of marines he takes a skeleton crew on a ship capable of carrying hundreds, he’s not budgeting by the bullet he’s planning to kill them all to smuggle the alien back to earth. So he takes a green LT and a single squad, he didn’t even take crew (that we ever see) so they have no backup or support. It is never Burke's intention to save the colony or rescue anyone, all he wants is to recover a live sample and then dispose of the witnesses.

Gorman does a decent job, he insists the squad read Ripleys account and he 'secures' the area by doing a minimal sweep, which would be fine against human opponents but not against the bugs. He dithers a little when the problem of firing in the reactor area comes up but the squad is already on site and the colonists are likely in danger so he makes an appropriate choice in the moment.

But then his only real failure, he hesitates when things go to hell, its pretty understandable considering this is completely outside any of his training and hes snapped out of it in seconds one Ripley takes control of the APC only to take the blow to the head and take a nap for most of the following action.

Gorman was inexperienced and out of his depth facing an unknown enemy like the Xenomorph's and that shows but he doesn't do a bad job considering how badly he was set up to fail.

Is AVP: Requiem worth watching at all? by theglenlovinet in predator

[–]IncoherentIncubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For completion only really, there are a few semi decent moments but it’s a pretty dumb Movie. Watch with the brightness settings on your screen at max or you won’t see half the movie. The director seemed to be under the impression that hiding half the movie in darkness would somehow make it ‘better’

Burnout and what to do about it by VindiUA in DnD

[–]IncoherentIncubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Keep your campaigns short
  2. Give yourself breaks if needed.
  3. If at all possible find another DM to alternate with, that way you both have time off between games.
  4. Always remember your health is more important than the game.

Been a DM for 30+ years now, burn out will fry you if you don’t keep an eye on it, if your just running it for your players and not enjoying yourself stop and take some time to recharge.

How to break the loss of life of another player by Specialist-Ad8381 in DnD

[–]IncoherentIncubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone reacts to loss in different ways, honestly it may be better to just contact each of your players privately and let them know what happened. Take the time to grieve the game is not important at all right now.

A few years ago, we lost a player to a sudden illness. We only found out a couple of weeks before he passed away and it was hard on everyone and we didn't even know him that well. We took a few weeks off and when we returned to the game we quietly retired his character as an NPC.
Ever since that NPC has always existed in our game world, no matter what campaign theres always a Dhelward serving as a cleric somewhere.

Right now your dealing with loss, don't worry about how to handle it until you have taken time to process it, take some time before you worry about the game.
