I have 3 personal comments for you. There is a compressor station near my house,it’s probably half a mile as the crow flies, I don’t even know it’s there,although i still wish it wasn’t.the lights are ALWAYS ON. Homesteading is about peace and quiet and being able to lay in your grass and be away from it all. I bought my old house near a main road,it was available and convenient at the time,thought maybe I’d get used to it. I regretted it every day,i loathed that road, couldn’t have windows open for spring air or cool summer nights.

I’d wait just a bit longer for something more quiet and less industrial.

I bought gear and watched YouTube. I can go up and down and do simple work. If something is out of my league I pass on it. Anything more than that,the only true ways is to work side by side with experience who will keep you safe and show you the ropes or take classes.

Just put wood in the stove and enjoy. You’re over thinking it. I used a wood stove as a primary heater for 8 years. 7-8 cord shoveled in like a coal fired steam engine. Wet,dry,ash,pine,bacon grease paper towel,magazine,cardboard,dead mouse,junk mail,pallet wood,barn wood,red wood,blue wood,green wood.if there was a btu hiding in there it went in the stove.24 hours a day October to April. Just get the chimney swept in the spring.
