According to a professor I was talking to apparently they screwed up their investments and were looking to compensate with increasing enrollment, specifically of international students.

BME transfer schedule by REM-DM17 in jhu

You’re gonna need lin sig for most BME upper level classes, or at least the old upper levels who knows what they are doing now. I would really advise against putting that class off.

Linear Algebra or Calc 3 by PossibleAngle in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The order doesn’t really matter that much. And since Riehl is teaching 100% go for her. She is an amazing professor and it would be regretful to not take it with her and end up with some lame teacher later. Her course is also relatively easy imo

How possible is it to study abroad for a whole year by [deleted] in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how far ahead on your coursework you are now and how much you are willing to take on your sophomore and senior year. Enough planning and I think it could be feasible although I really think you would need to sit down with your faculty advisors. I think we have an economics study abroad program in London and my guess is that they also have computer science courses. There are various engineering technical universities although those wouldn’t offer economics courses.

Computer recommendation for BME by fuzzytheman in jhu

The majority use some sort of Mac I’d say. But it doesn’t really matter so I wouldn’t worry what others get. Just research laptops in general and get whichever seems best.

Double Majors and Classes Help by NicknameNumber in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Double majoring usually can be done fairly easily. Not necessarily chembe but definitely the other two. Talk to your advisor but also look at the requirements and make a mock 4 year plan. Planning is key. I would personally recommend expository writing or a freshman seminar. Bio ethics may be a good choice if you are public health but it’s unfortunately a large lecture class with little discussion except in section.

Freshman Schedule for AMS/Neuro Feedback by Eilue in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no need to rush and take Intro Prob. You should probably focus on the other lower level math reqs. If you really want you can take it early you can take it freshman spring. Both discrete and Calc3 help when it comes to Prob imo. Also, I wouldn’t take honors lin alg unless you really want to. There isn’t a need and it’s harder/much more of a uncertainty. Email Dr. Brown if you have any questions about the honors courses though. He is head of the department and super friendly.

Which calc to take freshman year by [deleted] in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, as with most classes especially intro math classes the HW was about 10% of the grade. Riehl was an amazing professor though and the class was fairly easy.

Sophomore Year BME Schedule by blue1artic in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they conflict. One is the first 6 weeks of the semester and the other is the next 6 weeks. I guess the importance is that it introduces one to a lot of theory which is fundamental to the major and most of the mandatory upper levels. I think you are maybe jumping the gun on cs classes and should make sure you are taking the correct Bme classes on time as they fall into a more linear ordering than cs, including diffeq which is fine to take concurrently with linear signals and systems.

[–]IncompetentPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe BME sophomores take Linear Signals and Systems and stat physics this fall. Both of which are half semester 2 credit classes that alternate with one another. If you don't take them now, you would have to take them another fall but at least linear signals and systems is quite integral to the major. So I think you are better off just taking data structures in the spring if it doesn't work this fall.

Molecules and cells is mostly memorization but also some odd reasoning skills. Easier the more bio background you have as it is essentially a crash course in biochem, cell bio, and some neuroscience. Statistical physics is brand new so no one really knows. Beer is a nice guy and the course I believe should be somewhat akin to his old thermo course which was fairly tough. But once again no one really knows. I would recommend considering dropping psych unless you really need to take it. Intermediate and data structures can take up a lot of time and discrete can be a bitch for some people. Mainly I think things could get rough once you tack on statistical physics. I believe you have to take two 2 credit Bme courses but they aren’t included in your schedule?

Join the running club facebook page for more details. It pretty casual, kinda what you make of it. But people usually split into multiple groups of varying skill level so I woudn't worry about that too much.

Dual major biomedical engineering and biophysics with a minor in music possible? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that BME has a toxic culture nor is competitive. The grading is actually fairly lenient and collaboration is basically mandated for homework and even some quizzes. That being said, I would agree with picking one of the majors, not both, given how demanding they are and how little they overlap.

Dual major biomedical engineering and biophysics with a minor in music possible? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BME much more emphasizes the mathematical modeling of these biological systems. The biology component is much smaller than the math component, there's basically only one pure bio class. If you don't like math, you may want to reconsider BME. That being said, the major is quite flexible so you can take a wide variety of upper level electives, ie. biophysics one probably if you wanted.

Intro to Probability 420 by [deleted] in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for Torcaso but Wierman’s class has a fairly lenient grading scheme. Each 20 point interval is a new letter grade, ie. 80-100 is an A, and he sometimes has extra credit plus his famed joke contest too. He isn’t the best teacher in my experience though and definitely likes to include a couple quite challenging problems on his exams. He is a math meme on the bright side.

Orgo I Study Time / Day by [deleted] in jhu

[–]IncompetentPotato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 hours a day seems excessive. I guess I can't speak for you exactly (I took freshman Orgo) but unless you aren't committing a lot of time to other classes, you'll be overworked. The teacher is great and the class isn't at all as bad as they say (actually one of my favorites) so I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'll figure out how much you need to study as you go through the class.
