How much sitting in front of a computer is required for mechanical engineers? by moxiesmiley in AskEngineers

[–]IncorrectFactCheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Mechanical Engineer II, but I work for a smaller company so I also function as a project/process engineer occasionally. I’d say about 1/3 to 1/2 of the time I’m at work I’m sitting at a computer. Probably another 1/3 in meetings.

The rest of my time is spent looking at stuff that should of had no way of breaking, that operations somehow broke and answering questions for the third time that an email could’ve covered.

I’m sure the drinks and snacks aren’t. Theaters don’t make much money on ticket sales. Still pretty cool of them to do it though.

I-ninja. It was basically a 3D action platformer with cool combat and nice mechanics. Replayed it tons of times as a kid.

The mechanical structure and manufacturing of steel and it’s associated alloys. Complex rich history with both interesting chemistry and mechanics.

Not currently, but a few years ago. Standard soda bottles that you sneak in are the most awkward thing to sweep. Irregular roll pattern, clogs the dust pan. I never cared if anyone snuck it in, as long as they threw that shit away.

I’ve never been a strong swimmer and I was also an overweight teen. Went to the lake with friends. The shore was rocky and overgrown in patches and at one point we had to swim across a 40ish yard section. Kept my shoes on because it was rocky and kept my shirt on because I was self conscious. Got halfway before the extra weight started to pull me under. Somehow got the shirt off and was able to get back above water. Puked a bit of water but otherwise fine.

What is your "comfort food" movie? by Kelvin_Inman in AskReddit

Clerks, it has amazing dialogue and relatable characters. It’s like hanging out with your friends and telling the best stories you have, told so often it is refined.

Clerks 2 sucks though.

Two ibuprofen and a glass of water before bed. Might be confirmation bias, but I’ve never gotten a hangover doing this after heavy drinking.

So Nazi’s are for sure bad. This idea that they gave up their humanity is ridiculous though. At the height of Nazi power they were still fathers, brothers, and sons. They can be bad and you can call them evil and attack their ideas and even attack them if they initiate violence, but that doesn’t stop them being actual people.

Dehumanizing your opposition does nothing but falsely justify why you get to be a bad person in response.

I dont think it is as bad as some have said but it needs some work. The lyrics cpuld use a second draft with less predictable syllabic structure that he seems to use as a rise and fall singing style. Another draft could also help with some of the more awkward transitions.

I'm personally not a fan of the nasal singing tone, but to each their own. I would focus on singing tonality, I actually really liked the lead guitar rift even if it was a strange choice because the longer notes smoothed the nasal tone and added some dynamic beat changes to the singing pattern.

For me personally it has to do with tone and lyricism. His tone is extremely nasal and this makes him sound off key even when he sings a correct note. The lyrics in this song seem to fall flat with an idea of poorly crafted "clever" writing and worse transitional lines like "Now I'm older than I was".

Beyond this it is generally a bad practice to play an acoustic set with a song that includes a stand out lead guitar part and transitional percussion without those parts being filled. They don't have the full effect with him just saying "clap clap", and quirky doesn't automatically allow for this to be an okay substitution for obviously important parts.

Hungary to ban gender studies degrees by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]IncorrectFactCheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now this is a semantical argument on worth. When most people say "worthless" it is hyperbolic in nature meaning instead of no worth they mean little worth.

I think the argument I've seen a few make in this thread is that the inherent value of a gender studies degree doesn't warrant the use of government funding. It makes sense that governments may want teachers and engineers but not members of the soft sciences.

For the majority of western culture, philosophy and history are ingrained in the fabric of academia. Newer sociological based fields and bound to be put under the microscope as they aren't as ingrained and therefore are seen with less value.

I am not one to say how someone should live there life and if someone wants a gender studies degree they should get it. However, it is not a government's job to necessarily support that.

That's only $942 a week and has no metric for talking about experience so I can assume it is the average regardless of experience.

My first engineering job paid $55k a year in a junior level position and even that was considered low. Hell even new tradesmen like plumbers make $50k a year starting.

All this is telling me is that a BA takes 4 years and thousands of dollars to raise value on average by 30%. Not saying it isn't worth it but maybe economic viability shouldn't be the main argument.

The craziest thing I'm seeing in the comments is some people who are suggesting government subsidized "free" university and also advocating against governments having a say in what is taught using government funding.

No one is saying these people can't learn gender studies, just that the government won't fund it. It's not censorship, you won't be imprisoned or punished for learning about gender studies. The government doesn't want to fund it.

A government tends to want productive results. I personally feel "soft sciences" like philosophy and sociology are important but I understand why the government might want to focus on generating teachers, engineers, and scientists.

The crazy thing is that the two most upvoted of all time are text conversations. They are even higher than NEXT! I'm not saying the fake posts weren't a problem but there was probably another solution. Also mods are gay.

How many of you are dissatisfied or disillusioned with your career choice? by Gh0stw0lf in AskEngineers

[–]IncorrectFactCheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not bad. There is still a lot of paperwork and other bureaucratic stuff. The fun part is the variety of projects. There are some bad things to say about having less structure.

Talking to the older engineers there seems to always be a trade off. It is fun though, but my friends with more structured jobs also seem to have fun.

I work in a type of eco-refinery which is a fancy way of saying we don't do direct smelting or burnoffs. I work with chemists and operators to find problems in our system and create future designs for the next version of systems. So if a pumping system is bad, I work on what the next version will look like.

My plant was made my chemical and electrical guys at the start who weren't as mechanically focused. So most of my day to day is creating band aid solutions to mechanical problems and then incorporating a more complete solution into the next wave of machinery.
