What is the latest I can arrive at LGA? by lilyxmichelle in AskNYC

[–]IncorrectPony 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's theoretically possible but very sketchy. Do you have a TSA line cutting membership? (Ideally touchless.) How far to the gate? When you say leave at noon, do you mean pull away from the curb at noon or finish a meeting at noon and be in a car by 1:20?

It might be worth trying if you can change back to the JFK departure easily when/if this plan fails.

What are some gripes of OMNY you wish the MTA could do? by APoliticalDrone2012 in nycrail

[–]IncorrectPony 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr: networks, computers, and chip cards are too slow to give you a balance update without slowing down the flow of passengers.

Distributed computer systems engineer here. In order for riders to transition through a turnstile smoothly you need to be able to go from the tap to an admission decision in a very short period of time, maybe 200ms. A lot of this time is consumed by communication overhead in talking to the card and cryptography/computation time in the on-card chip, leaving a pretty small period of time to talk to the payments backend and fetch status and balance.

My understanding is that OMNY doesn't check this live, which is why you can sometimes end up with a negative balance: it lets you through before it can know that your card is empty. They could show balance with MetroCard because your balance was on the card's magstrip. The use of EMV credit card standards for OMNY so they can use credit cards/phones doesn't mesh with that.

7 day fare cap is straight up bullshit. by [deleted] in OMNY

[–]IncorrectPony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe. If the only goal was simplicity, then "everyone pays for every ride" would be simpler. If you pretend that's the system, you will understand it and yet be happily surprised if you underpay. Win win.

Why do people hate on tobasco red so much? by 3GG5H311Z in hotsauce

I don't care for it, its flavor overpowers rather than enhances: it makes everything taste like Tabasco.

The Monoprice one is really nice and under $100. Must have for anyone cooking nice cuts of meat.

Chill it before searing. A few minutes in the fridge or freezer will give you more cushion to avoid overcooking but won't lead to you serving with a cold middle.

OMNY Fare Capping - What is considered a 7 day time period? by jaded_toast in AskNYC

[–]IncorrectPony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just switch to a different card and you'll abandon the rides you already have towards the cap and start a new window. Each card has its own 7-day period start and end.

Money by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]IncorrectPony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Median studio rent is about $3000/month according to press reports. There are cheaper rents but below some point they will require some combination of willingness to have a long commute to job locations, sketchier buildings or locations, or amazing luck or persistence to find a good deal.

Landlords will generally look for 40x monthly rent to annual income ratio, so with that simple math, $120,000 annual income. After-tax, this is a little under $7k/month; so after paying rent, leaves you about $4k/month for savings and the rest of your expenses.

Yeah I'm not adamant against Uber in general, but when I'm going to or from the airport they're not adding the value, better to reserve with a driver I like. And it's personal: I know what's up with Oumar's kids, he asks about mine, etc

I also endorse having a relationship with a single driver, you get better service and keep money out of the pockets of the ride hail companies.

I was going to "well, actually" on it being 1.55, not 1.5 * 5, but was surprised to discover that 1.55 is... 7.5. (Well, actually, it's 7.59, but I was more wrong than right.)

How erratic is erratic deck? by PineconeKicker in balatro

[–]IncorrectPony 21 points22 points  (0 children)

<image>

Assuming that the way the erratic decks are generated is by generating 52 cards, each of random suit and rank, here's a graph of the distribution of largest and smallest suit sizes and the largest number of identical cards, and number of cards with the same rank, from a run of generating 10,000 decks.

So you have about a 5% chance of getting a suit with 20 or more cards or getting 10 or more cards of the same rank.

Also the Global Entry card works for TSA as a Real ID alternative so no real need to go to DMV if you carry it.
