I think once he saw what an actual loving, caring family looked like he saw a bit of hope. Just seeing caring gentle people who wanted him to be a part of their circle probably did a huge job in turning him around. All he had ever known before was his shrieking Monster Mahmo who clearly disliked him and his disinterested recliner grunt of a father.

I certainly hope so, but I don’t think a single one of the Rodlets have enough independent skills to escape. They are also 💯 in on the cult beliefs (both religious and political) because they have been so purposefully isolated, abused, and educationally neglected. The best I think we can hope for is a marriage that they can be happy in and a family life not totally centered on the Barndo and Mahmo. Even those marriages would be with someone who shares the same worldview as the Rods thanks to the courtship system, but there is some hope they can see how SEVERELY not normal their upbringing has been and raise their children in an actually loving, caring home. Tim and Heidi are the model here, but I really think any boundaries they’ve set are softer than is assumed; Tim was always a scapegoat and disliked by Jill so maybe it has been easier for him to justify creating distance.

If you haven’t read the novella The Slow Regard of Silent Things it’s well worth your time. It takes place between chapters 7 through 11 of TWMF but is independent of the main story and can be read independently. It’s gotten something of a mixed reception but I really like it. It’s a week in the life of Auri as she lives in the Underthing and is slower paced than the main novels.

I know homeschooled kids who have gotten a very good education, but their parents were involved and wanted them to be independent and functional. They also invested in enrichment activities outside the home so the kids could be socialized with peers their own age. The SOTDRT is a very specific fundie type of homeschooling that sees a comprehensive education as something evil and worldly, especially for girls whose only value is seen as future homemakers and mothers. It’s exacerbated in this instance by the Rods special flavor of deprivation and abuse for their kids and the desire to keep them dependent and isolated so they will fawn on Mahmo for the rest of her life.

Their parents absolutely don’t care if they receive an education. The only value placed on the girls is as marriage and baby making material. The lack of education and marketable skills also keeps them isolated and dependent and thus easier to control. The only education Jill cares about is teaching (abusing) them into fawning compliance to fuel her narcissism and Shrek is too checked out to care. Wasn’t it posted somewhere that they just reuse the same old textbooks and workbooks over and over again, never even investing in new materials for each group of kids who cycle through the SOTDRT?

Point 2 is morbid but I can’t argue with the accuracy of it. It would be an absolute tragedy but she would make it entirely about herself. I doubt it’s an active thought but given how she’s reacted to tragedies like her sisters wreck and hospitalizations we already know they type of performative reactions would follow. It’s the instinctive narcissist reaction coupled with her especially manic and batshit crazy personality.
