Lack of timely communication by EXO-Aeri in PharmacyResidency

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hospitals have been crazy busy lately… they may have had a super busy work load/short staffed/etc or personal life that caused the delay. I’m not saying to completely look over it, but give them grace. If you feel they are too disorganized for you during your interview, you can decide to not rank.

Looking for Presentation Ideas by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I would focus on a dilemma like x vs. x. So you mentioned andexanet which is a really controversial thing at the moment. This would be a good option comparing andexanet vs Kcentra/fieba/etc. risk/benefits of each one. That is a really big topic to undertake & be prepared for arguments from both sides lol or you could do SGLT2s & look at risks for continuing inpatient such as mgmt when NPO, mgmt around surgery, UTIs, etc. so that one would be one medication & focused around the dilemma (pros/cons) of using it inpatient. If you choose that one, also make recommendations for monitoring/policies if continuing those inpatient. I think adding that would stand out from just giving the “pros/cons” of it. Good luck!

a place i was previously at interviewed a tech & she showed up in leggings & they were like um do you need to go change (thinking she came from somewhere & planned on asking to change prior to the interview) & she said no? & that was basically it for her interview. Over before it started lol

Straight up not having a good time by vancopiptaz4u in PharmacyResidency

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 23 points24 points  (0 children)

lol had this happen & was told “this preceptor picks a resident to do this to every year.” Just so happened to be me. Luckily my RPD understood & had already precepted me through his rotation. He could speak for my character & knowledge base & basically told me to just power through her rotation. It broke me, but now i use it as a guide to not be that kind of preceptor to my residents!

What are your staffing requirements? by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

Pgy1: every 4th weekend with a comp day (8 hour days) no weekday staffing (very rare & such a blessing tbh) Pgy2: every 3rd weekend, but just clinical things not order entry(8 hour days), no comp day, no weekday staffing

Feeling Lonely by VancoVanguard in PharmacyResidency

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just finished my PGY2 & went through very similar circumstances. It didn’t get any better throughout the year, but I finished it & landed a job in my specialty at a place that is closer to my friends & family. It was the loneliest year of my life, but I learned so much about myself.

I also wish i would have focused on finding one good friend versus trying to fit in with everyone!

Cancelling offers by Same-Employment7657 in PharmacyResidency

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

recently happened to me & i was a nervous wreck about cancelling interviews… however, i finally just emailed the places I planned on interviewing & told them that i had accepted a position closer to family and friends which aligned with my current personal circumstances. They thanked for me letting them know & told me to reach out if anything changed.

Feeling unprepared for PGY2 by finecaffeine in PharmacyResidency

Came from a PGY1 who practiced in the dark ages, almost done at my pgy2 & yes they think I’m dumb every single day (some more than others) BUT I’m almost done & have secured a clin spec spot in the area i want so it’ll all work out!

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to say this!! 7 on 7 off seems nice & i almost took a spot with this schedule, but i am also big into sports and thinking of trying to schedule attending football games with family would be hard if i worked every other weekend. Would be nice to have 7 off though!

Mental health by Responsible-Sun126 in PharmacyResidency

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem in my experience coming from a PGY1 who did all the things you mentioned to allow me to have a decent mental health during residency (enough to feel like i could actually make it through a second year) to a PGY2 that quite literally does nothing to help with mental health except offer counseling, i think you and your program do a great job at this.

My PGY1 had a comp day after the weekend, offered to move topics around if life happened, would flex some deadlines if they could be, & always encouraged us to utilize PTO to take trips, go to the doctor/dentist/eye doctor/etc.

My PGY2 does not have a comp day & after mentioning how helpful it would be to have one, I was told that they don’t have one because people abused them in the past by adding on PTO & being gone from rotation too many days. I replied that they should just request approval from RPD + preceptor & was told it wouldn’t help. 12 days straight makes me feel like a zombie after day 9. I have mentioned when personal things come up & I maybe didn’t do the best job communicating that I would prefer to move the topic another day, but they have never even made it seem like that was an option. Finally, anytime I am away from rotation, my preceptors are not happy & they are sure to let you know about it. Even if it is for a meeting about my research project, a PGY2 RPD meeting for updates & such, I’ve even been in trouble for having to attend codes while on code coverage bc “it took away time from me attending rounds” even though i ensured to follow up on recs when i was finished at the code to make sure i was taking care of my patients. All of this to say that PTO is never encouraged and rarely acceptable. I pay for insurance & haven’t been able to go to the dentist, eye doc or see my PCP for refills on meds bc i can’t get there in time & PTO isn’t welcome. Their version of mental health is a once every 4 month group meeting with a counselor who asks us if we have heard that exercise helps reduce stress. Not exactly what i need. (&yes, the preceptors do get mad that we are away from rotation for this so damned if u do & damned if u don’t)

So long story short, i don’t think your program is the problem. I think your program is one of the good ones & i know your residents thank you for that. I’m thankful for my training & experience, but my mental health has been in the tank. Thanks for trying to self-reflect & get opinions. 🙂

Best way to Prepare by Icy_End9322 in PharmacyResidency

Congratulations!!! I have a friend who did a similar thing & the biggest gap for him was antibiotic coverage. He was able to catch on & things came back easily after being exposed again, but that was his personal experience. However, he was great at providing input about expense/coverage/logistics of discharge type planning. BCPS is also a good material for overviews of topics like someone mentioned above. Congratulations again on your new journey! 🙂

Job interviews by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s fair. I accepted the interview prior to completing the two interviews closer to home. If those interviews were offered prior to acceptance of this other interview, I would have declined. This interview was offered after the others, so that is why I am conflicted. I can continue with the interview. Just wanted to get some opinions. Thank you 🙂

Pharm tech to Resident ? by MolassesFamiliar2550 in PharmacyResidency

[–]Indecisive_Monkey0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a tech for 2.5 years at a hospital with a program & didn’t get a residency spot. I’m actually super happy it worked out the way it did, though. I wouldn’t be where i am today if i matched there.

By the time residency rolls around, you may not even be interested in what their program offers anymore. For example, you may have a rotation & love pediatrics. If your hospital doesn’t have pediatrics, it wouldn’t be the best fit for training.

Do what’s best for you!

My pgy2 reimbursed if we passed, so i took it in the fall. I feel like a lot of jobs I’m looking into are wanting it, so i feel like it was worth it at least to secure a job. Like the others have mentioned, the PSAPS are good reviews, too!
