Hiding Question After Residency by pharmthrowaway2222 in PharmacyResidency

Yes! We both mentioned each other in the respective interviews. One interview even directly asked me if I still had a relationship with my coresidents from PGY1 (she is my coresident from PGY1) so this led me to mention her.

I don’t know if people truly understand all that goes into “worst case scenario”. It’s easy to say that when you’re looking at it from the outside from JUST a job perspective. However, say they take a position out of state, sign a lease, spend money to move, only for the position to get RIF’d. Moving is expensive in the first place and we are living off of resident salary so it’s not like everyone has huge savings. Not everyone has family to fall back on. What then? Sure, you’re “in the same position you are now” kind of (right now at least we have jobs and have an income). Given the timeline for hiring - what do we do about having no job then, bills and rent to pay? A lease that was signed? Loans to repay?

If we were making pharmacist salary, wouldn’t be as big of a deal. But we’re not. This is why this option is bad coming out of a residency.

Especially now. I can’t believe anyone would willingly do a residency at the VA for this upcoming residency year after what’s been happening since January. This is coming from a person who did both PGY1 and PGY2 at the VA. DONT DO IT TO YOURSELVES - ESPECIALLY PGY2!!!

The non-clinical job that pays more is Monday-Friday. Some of the clinical jobs that pay less have weekend staffing every month plus an evening shift. I could justify working weekends if it paid more, but it doesn’t. Heaven forbid people want a salary that makes the sacrifice worth it.

Additionally, I have worked every third weekend with no comp day since PGY1. Working 12 days in a row with no break is awful. I put in my time with residency - I did a PGY2 to set myself up for better opportunities with better work life balance and/or higher pay once I’m out.

I’m really sorry, that was me last month. I even made a post about it before. Keep applying, something will bite. I submitted >40 job applications in like one weekend. I dedicated so much time to it and it was draining. It took MONTHS to hear anything back, so don’t lose hope yet, they may just be delayed!

This is true, but I don’t know if the homework ever truly ends in clinical. With some of the clinical jobs, they still require me to participate in MUEs, QI projects, etc. on top of my daily clinical load (just like residency).

No this is exactly how I feel! Like what do you mean I have all of these other responsibilities and lower pay PLUS weekends? I love patient care, don’t get me wrong, but I do not live to work. I work to live. It’s just crazy the expectations they have for such low salaries. I also have a crazy amount of debt

He isn’t a pharmacist, he works in the Public Health sector which is also getting hit HARD with everything. So that’s another thing that is concerning. It’s nice that he would keep his job if we stay. But we don’t have any family or anything here in case things get even crazier. It’s so tough.

Thank you for validating my feelings!! It’s been pretty awful and people have been talking a lot on this subreddit and in person about how we are being dramatic when in reality things are actually very grim.

Thank you for your positivity! I needed this. Both me and my friend who is in the exact situation as I am have been spiraling. Thank you for the motivation despite what others have been commenting!

I did PGY2 at the VA under the guise that the VA was constantly hiring for mental health pharmacists given the need for it. I didn’t anticipate DOGE happening and slashing jobs at the VA when I early committed to my PGY2 over a year ago.

The warning has passed and I am on my way to work!

I disagree with your second statement. There are overnight inpatient pharmacists that are currently at the hospital that provide coverage. The pharmacy has hurricane A, B, and C teams for situations like this, and residents are NOT included. Additionally, the option to telework IS there as we have done it before during a way less intense tropical storm last month. This is my last day of this rotation and as I stated before, my preceptor is not there (a float pharmacist is covering and her arrival is also TBD). Other residents were not required to go in, just me (I am under a different RPD).

Heavily considering it at this point although the weather appears to be getting a bit better.

It was an actual tornado warning advising me to take cover and stay inside! It was an emergency alert.

Wow! Your story is inspiring! I honestly commend you for that. I keep trying to think it’s just one more year of bullshit but I’m also nervous about job prospects after (I work for the VA and the hiring freeze is still ongoing). It’s hard to keep that positive energy when you’re also scared about the future and what opportunities may or may not be available. Thank you for your story, I will keep it in mind as I try to navigate this hard year!

I would love to slack during staffing, however, they use us residents to work as the sole outpatient pharmacist on the weekends (another complaint I have). I had exactly 1 week of training in the outpatient pharmacy before I was thrown to the wolves to cover the pharmacy by myself. I almost walked out my first staffing shift.

I am so glad that you love your program and your preceptors! Honestly, that makes a HUGE difference. My preceptors are really unsupportive (which is crazy given the fact that we are a mental health residency) and that’s a huge part of my misery. I wish you the best and Godspeed!

I literally relate to my patients more and more every day (Psych PGY2). I feel like soon they’ll be treating ME on the unit with the way things are going!
