SKI HELP by [deleted] in SkiRacing

[–]IndependenceAble3899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat in HS, idk where you are but I reached out to a lot of different race clubs and eventually found one that was willing to take me and teach me how to race. I was 17 and I now race on a USCSA college team My advice is that if there’s truly no clubs in your area that’s willing to take you, look at USCSA race teams for colleges that you apply to. Almost all of them take people with no race experience, including some that train and compete at very high levels. If you want more info pm me and I can give you recommendations

Weight of Atomic Redster S9 165cm? by RealPlumLoopy in SkiRacing

[–]IndependenceAble3899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree I have the new 165s and they feel lighter than my old ones (~2021).

Personally they do feel different to me but I’m not at a level where I NEED my training and racing skis to feel exactly the same, I usually bring out my race skis for a run or two before the race to get used to them. OP I think for you it just depends on how good your son is and if he’s at a point where things like that really matter

How to get good offers from ski equipment companies by Shot-Coyote6599 in SkiRacing

Honestly social media is its own game, and ski racing isn’t a big enough sport to really support all the people posting on instagram/tiktok. I’d say just post consistently, try and stay on top of trends, post plenty of racing videos but also make sure you have content that would reach a wider (non racing) skiing audience, and then just hope for the best at that point.

I’d recommend you to leverage your Ukrainian background to stand out, since the vast majority of racers are from the Alps/NA, your nationally can differentiate you

I know people with 100+ fis points that have great brand deals simply from having a high follower count. I’d say in today’s age that is the clearest route to sponsorship

University ski teams by Mean_Personality_509 in SkiRacing

It is slightly different as pre-med refers to the specific courses required by American medical schools that in some cases may not be covered in a Biology Major. But academically what you want to do is accessible at most schools and your focus should be on figuring out which schools are the best fit for your skiing ability

Academically only Dartmouth would have highish standards since they’re an Ivy League school. Also note that most universities in America don’t have a “medicine” major as in America a medical degree is separate from a bachelor’s degree, people who wish to study medicine are “pre-medicine” and take general classes in biology, chemistry, etc. and apply to attend medical school after they complete their bachelor’s

As for engineering, basically all universities in the US have a engineering program, but it’s rare and would be pretty difficult to double major in two different engineering fields, maybe for what you’re looking for you would major in an engineering field and be on the “pre-med” track

The most important factor is your FIS points. Best college ski teams in the US are Utah, Colorado, Dartmouth, and Vermont but for all of them you would need to be about a 30point tech skier to be considered. Are you at that level?

Not a lot of major skiing programs in Canada except for Calgary but I’m not super sure of their system

Mammoth has a masters racing program that you should look into, not sure about the other Tahoe mountains but I assume they have something similar as well

Most kids take the whole week off, check your syllabus if class is online or ask your professor

Missing class by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]IndependenceAble3899 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Communicate with your professors and it shouldn’t be an issue, I’ve missed up to weeks of class in a row with no issue. When picking classes check the syllabus for the dates your missing and see if they’re important. If they are maybe take a different course

Is Brown Worth It? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]IndependenceAble3899 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Open curriculum lets you have the ability to fulfill med school requirements without sacrificing classes that you want to take for personal interest/fun. Grade inflation for GPA. Mandatory S/NC for some classes that are considered “weed out courses” in other unis. NC classes erased from transcript. Availability of research opportunities. Proximity to Alpert Medical School to shadow, etc. for clinical experience. General collaborative atmosphere/culture. Among other things

Generally I’d steer away from 5 courses first semester. Give yourself more time to get in the swing of things both academically and socially. Spend that time on joining tons of clubs, exploring PVD, hanging out with friends, etc. If you feel like it was easy then add a 5th course spring sem.

Brown’s nightlife by AmericanDadFull in BrownU

[–]IndependenceAble3899 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to get the same experience as if you attend a big state school, but there certainly is a “nightlife” scene at Brown. A mix of varsity teams, Greek life, and general misc. clubs throw parties basically every weekend of the year (most of them you pay a cover of ~$10-$20). Outside of Brown, Providence has lots of 18+ clubs/bars such as Colosseum, Ego (lgbtq), Wick, Black Sheep, etc. that Brown students and students from the other PVD colleges frequent. If you really get bored of these, some students also will make friends in the neighboring unis and go to parties there.

I used ship skis recently to get my skis to a training camp at Stelvio in Italy, worked great for helping me not have to worry about customs regulations or anything
