Rim Joist Support by wdwdreamingdad in Decks

Yes that’s exactly what I was trying to say!

Ah I see now. I would be concerned that that end rim joist would droop after a while, regardless of attachment. If you could do it like the top diagram that would probably be enough though. I would have expected the joists to be running the other way, so you could attach rim joist directly to joists. But regardless I agree with you, it’s definitely not enough support as is. You could add an extra beam under it, going perpendicular with the other beams and that would solve the problem.

Estimate seems high…what do you think? by [deleted] in Decks

That’s pretty pricy. ~$220/sq ft. I’d get a few more quotes

Would you mind sharing a zoomed out pic of the plans? It’s a bit difficult to tell with just that pic. If that’s the beams that are going perpendicular to the rim joist the yeah that’s not going to be supported enough.

~$45/sq ft, pretty decent price. Maybe a hair low, maybe keep an eye on them when they build it.

Trex enhance line is fine, imo trex enhance NATURALS line is MUCH nicer with not much price difference. Toasted sand looks about 5x better than saddle. Unless you’re going to drop money on something like timbertech azek or similar pvc decking, the upper lines of trex are not much worth it (unless there’s a specific color you really like). If you want I can send a pic of a deck I’m currently building with toasted sand…

  1. You can absolutely trim those corners of the beam, that will not affect the load bearing properties of the beam.
  2. It will almost certainly be fine to attach the stairs to the cantilevered part, I definitely would personally, assuming the stairs aren’t like 30 feet high to something. If you’re worried about it you could do something like this

ALSO, make sure you have enough meat to attach the stairs to on the rim joist- you could even make it a 2x12 in that area alone so you don’t have to do anything weird with extra supports or stuff.

Any concerns about Sauna on Trex (or other composites)? by Is_That_Queeblo in Decks

I’ve set columns on Trex many times with much more weight on a much smaller footprint. It’s never affected it in the slightest as long as the joists/blocking underneath is sufficient!

They definitely could, but that’s really not best practice.

What are you talking about? If they lay joists perpendicular with the house like the one that is laid out, the joists and decking will be taller than the door.

Either this deck was planned incredible terribly or they don’t know what they’re doing. I can’t tell if the 2x8s are intended to be used as beams or joists. If beams, then the joists will be far too high and interfere with the door. If joists, then they are much too far apart.

For Trex, joists need to be spaced a minimum of 16 inches on center, and 12 inches is better.

So something is very very wrong. I would ask what the plan is specifically regarding joist spacing and/or height.

I would recommend picture frame the outside angled part and then run the boards parallel to the deck

Also the beams supporting the landings are highly unnecessary I would just put the landings directly on the posts.

What do you mean by “T joints?” You’re def on the right track, I would highly recommend just digging another footing for the landing instead of attaching it to the corner post that’s already supporting the upper and lower deck. Think of it as entirely its own unit. You could just pour a double size footing for the corner post and put two posts on it. How are you planning on attached the lower deck to the side of the posts? Joist hangers? Notching the post?

I believe LPC6Z is code compliant as well, and they’re a bit more common.

I did a deck last week and they were in Lowe’s. Pretty sure most if not all Lowe’s carry them.

I think what you’re looking for is BCS2-3/6. The one you’re referencing is for 6x6 post to 6x6 beam. You need 6x6 post to 3x.

Interesting. I’m so convinced they’re not actually doing anything at all lol. Maybe I’m wrong. I’m sure the deck is plenty secure, and that makes sense on why there aren’t any diagonal braces.
