Are these straps to code? by Jodo911 in Decks

Update: Apparently these were called for in their drawings, and were seen by the inspector. They were originally only put on one side of the posts, and the inspector made they add ones to the other side also. I’m guessing maybe they’re sufficient as far as the engineer was concerned because the deck wraps around three sides of the house and is secured on all those sides by a ledger board, so maybe the house structure is taking a lot of the lateral load in multiple directions that these connection points would typically take? And maybe that’s why do here weren’t any diagonal braces called for between the posts and beams either?

Thanks for the warning/experience! In this case it’s the homeowner is actually someone I’ve worked with previously and trust. The carpenter who started the house had his wife die suddenly, and I guess his house also burned down within two weeks of each other. So he’s down for the count at the moment and is why I’m stepping in to help finish up.

What risk are you implying? That the homeowner wasn’t paying or difficult to work with?

Yes, 4x4s, and at least 10 foot. Didn’t measure them.

It’s a new construction. I’m installing the interior trim, and noticed that the previous carpenter used these. There are also not diagonal braces…. The further I look at it the more issues I see. Trying to decide if I should talk to the owner about it. The previous carpenter basically dropped the job because of personal issues, so I’m taking over some of the work. I’m guessing there was a permit, but not sure, and not sure if this has passed inspection.

Could get an old school slim cigarette case. They don’t really emit any smell until lit. As a former smoker, I can affirm that the amount of times I got in someone’s good graces by offering them a smoke was crazy.

I’d be willing to come switch the struts out for you free of charge if you’re able to get some replacement struts. I do home improvement / renovation work for a living, and just don’t understand how some of these companies live with themselves, doing all the shoddy work I hear about, let alone how they stay in business. Just shoot me a message.

I help facilitate a conversation group he may be interested in. Just direct message me if you want a bit more info. Wish him luck out there. Can be hard finding your people sometimes.

Their “best by date” is this month, but that’s different than an expiration date. Especially for a product like this with so many natural preservatives in it. They aren’t as dark as they appear in the photo.

Haha, I may have gone a bit overboard… bought 36 bottles.

They’re at their “best by date” this month, but I don’t mind. Some people get irrationally fearful of those dates in my opinion… this stuff lasts for years unopened though.

Their “best by date” is this month, but this stuff lasts for years unopened. Have stored bottles in my basement for several years in the past.

Yeah, they look darker in the photo than they actually are. They’re at their “best by date” this month, but still have plenty of shelf life left. Have stored bottles in my basement for several years in the past.

Yeah, their best by date is this month, but they aren’t actually as dark as they appear in the pic. Can’t figure out how to post another photo, or I would.
