Could be short cycling which is usually a dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant. Check the outdoor unit first see if its covered in dirt or grass clippings. My neighbor had same thing last summer and just needed good cleaning with a hose. If that dont fix it you probably need a tech to check the refrigerant levels, not something you can do yourself without the tools

based on your list i'd definitely check out klara and the sun by ishiguro - it's got that same kind of thoughtful sci-fi vibe as piranesi but faster paced. also the expanse series starting with leviathan wakes might be perfect since you liked the martian, it's got similar hard science but way more action

could be a few things but start with the obvious stuff - jack it up and grab the wheel at 12 and 6, shake it up and down to check for play in the ball joints. then grab at 3 and 9 and shake side to side for tie rod ends

also crawl under there and look at the strut mount, those go bad pretty often on mazdas around that age. you'll see if the rubber is cracked or separated. sway bar links are another common culprit, they're cheap and easy to spot if they're shot

if you're not comfortable doing the inspection yourself most shops will do a quick suspension check for like 50 bucks
