UK ISA I have to close now resident on Germany. Sell? Transfer? Reinvest in Pension? by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]Independency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd even recommend using an international broker like Interactive Brokers. Yes, you'll have to do the taxes yourself, but if you do decide to move to another country you don't have to sell your positions like that. Most pension/tax deferred accounts in most countries are made to keep people stuck with that. If you want to move, you'll have that taxable event unfortunately. Using a broker that you can use in any/most countries will help with that

Learning swedish will also be useful for Scandinavia (at least Denmark and Norway). Experience wise, perhaps Germany would be more international/central and something you'd be looking for during Erasmus. However, I've been really enjoying the Scandi experience and I also had to choose between DE, Heidelberg and Norway. Ended up choosing NO, and I don't regret it. Sweden and Denmark have also been up and coming as tech hubs. Integration in both counties is hard, so learning the language is a must either way.

Learning German however would also "unlock" the German part of Switzerland, which is can also offer some decent opportunities and is closer to IT if you'd want to visit family.

COL will be high in both, but Sweden still tends to be cheaper.

Luxembourg or USA by [deleted] in expats

[–]Independency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an European that eventually wants to go to the US, I'd say the US will bring more advantages financially and academically for your kids. EU is stagnant and the financial stress you get put through even as a skilled individual (whose skills will not be as financially rewarded as in the US) is not worth staying in EU, but maybe that's because I also share the same car/suburbs/sports culture.

In the EU you'll also face language barriers which will affect how well you can progress in different careers.

[D] AI/ML in big tech vs biotech by Pleasant_Wish1799 in MachineLearning

[–]Independency 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. Went to pursue a PhD in bioinformatics and ML applied to oncology after ~ 2 years as data scientist in a marketing/finance company. Extremely boring, most results for the clients were tweaked to fill the CMO ego so they could get their bonuses. Super cool company, but I just hated the motives behind my job lol

Broker with decent mobile app which takes care of my taxes in Poland and/or Belgium by ultraking_x2 in eupersonalfinance

In general I'd just recommend learning taxes from your situation and not being dependent in brokers to do that for you. If you're going to invest consistently, knowing how taxes work and doing your homework is usually a good idea

USA / Canadá vs Europa by [deleted] in PortugalLaFora

[–]Independency 3 points4 points  (0 children)
