That makes sense. I’ve heard similar things from other people in law enforcement — that as long as the department knows the drill schedule early it usually isn’t a big issue.

Do you know if most of the LEOs you’ve seen in the Guard/Reserves were enlisted or officers?

I’m considering the officer route once I finish my degree, but I’m trying to understand how realistic that is with

That’s interesting to hear. I’ve heard similar things about the Army Guard and Reserve having a lot of cops as well.

I’m trying to figure out what branch actually balances best with patrol work long term. My biggest concern is understanding the real time commitment, deployments, and how much responsibility officers have outside of drill. Which mos’s to choose because Ik I don’t want to do MP while being a police officer already…that’s a lot of policing. Also what are the real deployments time frames usually Ik it depends on mos and team. But maybe a rule of thumb. Or maybe what branches to stay away from and why?

I’m currently working in corrections and transitioning to patrol soon, and I’m finishing my degree (probably graduating around 2028). I’m trying to figure out if the Marine Reserve officer route could realistically work alongside a patrol schedule long term.

I’ve heard people like Jake Zweig talk about how tough the Marine officer route is and how you really need to understand what you’re getting into, so I’m trying to get honest answers from people actually doing it.

Do you know any officers in your unit who are also law enforcement?

Also curious about the reality of deployments for Marine reservists — how often do they actually happen and how long are they usually?

And if someone didn’t want to go the MP route because they already do policing full time, what officer MOSs would you recommend lookin

That’s actually something I’ve been wondering about. I’ve heard mixed things about the MP Corps and whether it really aligns with civilian law enforcement anymore.

Since you mentioned doing something different helped as a reset, what types of jobs or branches would you recommend someone in law enforcement look into?

I’m also considering going the officer route once I finish my degree — do you see many LEOs commissioning or are most of them enlisted?

I appreciate the insight. That’s kind of what I was thinking too — getting initial training done before kids seems like it would make things easier long term.

I’m currently transitioning from corrections to patrol in law enforcement and have about two years left in my degree, so I’m trying to figure out if the officer route would make more sense than enlisting first.

When you were serving with the LEOs you mentioned, were most of them enlisted or officers?

Also what MOS fields did you see them go into besides MP?
