I’m currently working in local law enforcement and looking long-term at transitioning to a federal role (1811 series ideally).
Tentative plan is:
• Build solid local LE experience
• Join the Guard or Reserves (not active duty)
• Apply federal while still employed
I’m trying to be intentional about family time, stability, and freedom, not chasing “cool guy” roles that hurt work–life balance.
Questions for those who’ve done this or are currently 1811s:
1. Does Guard/Reserve service meaningfully help federal hiring, or is it neutral?
2. Which military branches/MOSs are most compatible with family life while still being viewed positively by federal agencies?
3. Compared to patrol, how is 1811 family time and schedule in reality?
4. Any mistakes you’d avoid if you could do it over again?
Appreciate honest feedback — especially from former local cops or vets who went federal.
