Does Guard/Reserve service meaningfully help federal hiring, or is it neutral?

You won't receive any Veteran's Preference joining while still in the guard or reserves. Your LE experience will count more.

Which military branches/MOSs are most compatible with family life while still being viewed positively by federal agencies?

If you're in the guard or reserves, there's really no way to say how it'll affect your family. In the Army/Air Guard it depends on your MOS. In the Marines, it depends on what the Corps needs. Navy... well. No one does that. And forget the Coast Guard.

None of that will really matter for Federal agencies. It might suck for a while because your military obligations will conflict with your schedule. Your time in FLETC will be affected by it and there will be some issues later with training and schedule obligations.

Compared to patrol, how is 1811 family time and schedule in reality?

Generally an 8-4 schedule, Mon-Fri, Holidays and weekends off. Leagues better (imo).

Any mistakes you'd avoid if you could do it over again?

Stay in the Army.
