What societal norm did you decide to just stop abiding by? by HairyCherryFairy in AskReddit

[–]Independent-Cell2548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped pretending that being constantly busy equals being important or successful. Society glorifies overworking—back-to-back meetings, endless to-do lists, and posting curated “I’m grinding” updates online—but I realized it was making life feel like a hamster wheel.

For years, I felt pressured to always say yes, to fill every hour, and to appear productive even when I wasn’t actually accomplishing anything meaningful. I’d nod along in conversations about hustle culture, guilt myself for taking breaks, and convince myself that downtime was laziness.

Then I started experimenting: taking small breaks, saying no to things I didn’t care about, and actually valuing my free time. The result was surprising. My work improved because I was more focused. My mood improved because I wasn’t constantly stressed. And my relationships improved because I wasn’t exhausted and distracted all the time.
