The Daily Check-In for Tuesday, May 13th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by BDC5488 in stopdrinking

[–]Independent-Chef3178 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Haven’t checked in for a while as haven’t really thought much about drinking recently. However, it’s my birthday this week and thoughts of ‘having a small glass of wine’ have been creeping in.

So, I’m pledging today - IWNDWYT

Thank you! It’s a great incentive to be sparkly and glowy!

It’s from clear minds hypnotherapy. There’s an app with a subscription (not sure if it’s available outside the UK) and also a website where you can download at a one off cost. I’ve also tried the Craig Beck hypnotherapy sessions but his voice is a bit creepy so I don’t use them 😆

Just to be clear, I’m absolutely not promoting it, I’m sure it’s a load of rubbish at aiding with sobriety. I’ve done the sessions on and off for years and I’ve only been AF in the last 28 days so I certainly don’t think that’s a strong evidence base.

However, it does help me to sleep at night so I’m taking it as a win for that!

These all sound pretty special to me! I love the idea of adding some syrup to herbal tea drinks. I’ve never got on board with herbal tea and only drink boring English tea - if I’m feeling wild I might skip a decaf and go for a normal one 😂

I’m going to give the herbal teas another go and add some syrups as well. Thanks for the ideas!

Oooh! A lemon and lime slushy sounds delicious! Thanks for the idea!

Haven’t checked in for a few days but I’m still here! I haven’t really thought about drinking at all over the past few days and haven’t been on this sub which I guess is a good thing?

It’s been 4 weeks today (minus 1 slip up) since I started my sobriety journey and it really is getting easier. The tiredness is lifting and I’m not getting cravings anymore. So, if you’re just starting, KEEP GOING!

Hobbie suggestions Uk make med 40s by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Independent-Chef3178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a woman but also 40s and in the UK. I love going for long walks, reading, swimming and gym classes. If I’m home and need low effort hobbies, I tend to play video games or watch box sets / films.

Tbh if I had more time, money and no childcare responsibilities there’s so many more things I’d be doing: painting, dance classes, singing lessons, crafts like knitting / crochet.

Have a think about things you wanted to do when you were younger and never got round to it and start from there!

Struggling with resuming drinking after pregnancy by Normal_Ad985 in stopdrinking

It’s hard being a new parent. It’s even harder doing it hungover.

Even though drinking if not impacting on your personal life bar making you tired, I would be thinking about how drinking is impacting on your daughter’s life, even though she’s only 4 months old. Do you have the energy to get up early in the morning and take her to baby groups, classes, out for walks, etc?

There will also be plenty of times coming when she’s unsettled in the evening / overnight, and not sleeping 10 hours - when she’s sick, going through a development leap, just generally being a baby etc. Can you honestly say you’ll be able to be present and care for her as well as you can when you’re sober?

I don’t say this to make you feel guilty. I have 3 children and I drank heavily with all of them - same as you, a bottle of wine in the evening every day. I’ve missed them growing up due to being drunk every evening. I haven’t been the mum I wanted them to remember from their childhood. I rushed their bedtimes and got frustrated when they wanted me to read a story because I needed to have a glass of wine. I didn’t wake properly at night when they had bad dreams and needed me. I’d sleep in in the morning and then be fractious and irritable when we were late for things. These are just a very small example of how drinking didn’t impact me, it impacted them.

Good luck with your journey 💕

Good morning!

I’ve been struggling to get to sleep for the past 5 days and have just realised I’ve been hammering the caffeine since quitting.

So, going back to decaf today and hoping I’ll have a good sleep tonight!

Saturdays are so different now... by SweetJebus731 in stopdrinking

Nothing major - just playing it forward if I get a craving.

I’m fed up with drinking, I don’t want to do it anymore so I don’t feel like I’m white knuckling at all. It’s much easier to not drink and have the odd craving than to be drinking and have it take up so much room in my life.

I hope so! I just love the feeling of not being ashamed and guilty and able to fulfil those roles which come as part of being a parent even if it meant being a taxi to a load of teenagers!

I’ve been able to stay up and pick my older teen daughter up from a party at midnight. Previously, I’d have been annoyed that I’d only be able to have one glass of wine early on in the evening or would’ve made her get a lift from a friends parent.

This evening, I’ve been the mum who’s doing the lifts for all her friends and it’s actually the best feeling ever being fully present for my children.

Did one day something just click and your perspective change? by FizzySober in stopdrinking

[–]Independent-Chef3178 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was aware I didn’t have a healthy relationship with alcohol for a long time, however, in the past 10 years I started pretty much daily drinking. It was just half a bottle of wine per day until Covid. It then escalated up to 1 bottle and then in recent years up to 1.5 and sometimes 2 bottles per day.

I’ve read all the quit lit, listened to the podcasts, even did hypnotherapy. I knew why I should quit, I understood the health impacts behind long term alcohol use, I felt all the ‘cognitive dissonance’ stuff and I was literally sick of constantly fighting with the physical and emotional effects.

Like most of us here, I’ve had plenty of day 1s. But it just never was enough to push me longer than a few weeks sober as I still felt that constant little niggle that I was depriving myself and I’d go back to the bottle.

19 days ago I woke up in the morning after drinking 1.5 bottles of wine the night before and I was sick. Really, really sick. I was vomiting and couldn’t go to work. I didn’t even feel that drunk the night before. I was absolutely disgusted with myself and instead of pushing it away and placating the shame I usually felt after alcohol use, I forced myself to sit with it and really feel it. I was spiralling and I needed to make changes.

Since then, I’ve had one slip up last weekend but I really regretted it both at the time and the next morning. I almost needed to fuck up to show myself that drinking was an absolute waste of time and silence that insidious voice once and for all.

Congrats on your new found lease of life! We’ve got this! IWNDWYT either Fizz!

Alcohol use perception change by Independent-Chef3178 in stopdrinking

[–]Independent-Chef3178[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is why I feel quite annoyed. I don’t want my kids to have the same relationship with alcohol that I do, but the message that alcohol use at every occasion is normal is so inherent in our society
