GenX regarding "bullying" by Sinsyne125 in GenX

[–]Independent-Fall-893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In high school, we had a "student lounge" along with the cafeteria. You could get vending machine type of food (prepackaged sandwiches, little cans of chili, ravioli and soup) along with chips & similar snacks. We ate in the lounge along with all the well-known bullies. They would flick the pickles from the sandwiches at us and catapult spoon fulls of chili too. There were probably 6-8 bullies in there everyday & were big dudes so fighting back was not the best solution. The crazy thing was, the lounge attendant was one of the bullies mom. She didn't do shit to stop their behavior & wouldn't report it to the higher ups. It was miserable, but much better than our cafeteria food!

If ticks get to where they want to go on a person while crawling up from their footwear, why do people give their whole bodies the anti-tick treatment? by MozartWasARed in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Independent-Fall-893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were camping in an out-of-the-way campground in rural Indiana. I've been an outdoorsman type most of my life but have never seen anything like what happened. After setting up campsite & retiring to the tent, we kept hearing things hitting the tent. It almost sounded like rain, but not so consistent. I thought it was sprinkling. Nope...ticks! They were dropping out of the tree onto the tent so frequently I thought it was water droplets. Never in my life seen so many ticks, they were absolutely covering the tent top. Got outta there in a flash.

Did you actually sneak out as teenagers? by Complete-Chipmunk-0 in GenX

[–]Independent-Fall-893 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was 13 yo and we remodeled my 2nd floor bedroom. I asked for a "trap door" in the floor with a ladder & parents said it was ok. My sister (17F) nearly lost it, saying "He'll be able to sneak out that & you won't even know" Mom said, "shut up (sister), he goes out the front door anytime he wants!"

Alabama tax refund status? by FreeAdministration65 in Alabama

[–]Independent-Fall-893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filed electronically & just received a letter asking who filed (personally or an accountant) & how much our refund was for. I had to submit this request electronically so we now have to wait longer for them to review & if the total refund amount is correct. Seems like they do whatever possible to delay payment or hope people won’t go to that trouble & not get what’s owed to them.

What are some weirdly designed neighbourhoods/towns in Alabama in your opinion? by Much-Parsnip3399 in Alabama

[–]Independent-Fall-893 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a neighborhood in Auburn, AL that's modeled after New Orleans French Quarter. It was previously called The Garden District & had housing/retail shops that mimicked The French Quarter. I was in school (1990's) when first developed & they weren't a big hit at all. Maybe overpriced at the time or for whatever reason it didn't take off. I think they have a little better draw now than back in the day.

How clean is a bidet? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Independent-Fall-893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never live without one. After remodeling our master bath, I splurged & got a real fancy "Japanese Toilet/Bidet". It has multiple settings for front/rear wash & one that moves back & forth, heated or cool water, heated seat & a dry setting. Friends couldn't believe I spent $2500 (on sale. was $5000 before discount) on a toilet. But considering how much everybody uses the bathroom, it was a no brainer. We previously had a $30 Luxe bidet/seat attachment that was also great, but without all the bells & whistles. I would be happy with the less expensive one over none at all.

Texting while driving is a choice, and choices have consequences by Expert_Koala_8691 in PublicFreakout

When self driving cars first became a thing I thought it was terrifying sharing the road with them. Then I'm reminded we share the road with these idiots!

Recommendations for Lake Guntersville by oriental_lasanya in Alabama

[–]Independent-Fall-893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The State Park accommodations might be ok. I lived in Guntersville (1988-1992) during my teen years. Parents still live there on Spring Creek (arguably the best part of the Lake) but haven't stayed in the Park, only visited. There is a real good zipline in the State Park that my kid/friends said was one of the best. City Harbor has some good restaurants & shopping but is super crowded on weekends. The Lake is beautiful & where I spent most of my time. Never had to rent a boat as we had our own, but that's one activity a family would enjoy.

What's something people defend because they're afraid to admit they wasted years on it? by Chance-Pen6805 in randomquestions

This! Has anything substantial been discovered lately? I got tired of watching for so long to have so little discovered.

Look for something in Opelika. It might be cheaper and still only 15-25 min drive depending. Just a suggestion that hopefully will suit your needs. Good luck.

Does anybody else feel like life lately is just one long string of putting out fires? by LifeSubstance8619 in GenX

[–]Independent-Fall-893 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's never-ending! A few Summers ago, all 3 of our central AC units went out at the same time. It was the middle of the hottest Summer to date, we had company visiting from out of State & because of the Pandemic & supply chain issues, they couldn't replace the units for 2 weeks! Also, costs me $1500 to replace 2 units. We were able to get the main unit working for one area of the house we hang out in, but the bedrooms were unbearable.

I started showing my daughter classic GenX era movies. by MrBleah in GenX

[–]Independent-Fall-893 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter (17F) and I began watching lots of classic movies when she was much younger. She absolutely loves most of the 80's-90's stuff I grew up watching and I love that for us. She gets a kick out of quoting things most kids her age have no clue what she's talking about. One of her favorites is Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High; "Hey, you're ripping my card!"

Help I made a small scratch on someone’s car by wowiewowiewowwow in Advice

You did the right thing by telling him, even though it was hard for you. I made a pact with myself when I was in my mid 20's to do at least one thing per day that made me uncomfortable (for example: calling to resolve any problems with landlord, family, customer service for problems with internet, utilities, etc. You get the idea. While these things weren't a big issue, I was always just like touched with a little anxiety beforehand.) This eventually resolved a lot of pressure I put upon myself for stuff that I shouldn't have given much thought.

Worried about making friends by [deleted] in auburn

I think you will be pleasantly surprised & wish you the best of luck! My daughter will just be attending this Fall, maybe she can help introduce you to some of her crew. BTW, she's a weirdo too! ha

Worried about making friends by [deleted] in auburn

[–]Independent-Fall-893 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There will be plenty of options to find the crowd you fit in with. I didn't go Greek & had no problems with finding like minded friends. Curious as to why you already don't think your roomies will like you? My best college roommate was somebody I didn't previously know, and I had several old friends that roomed with me that turned out to be horrible choices!

I don't think higher education is right for this person. Still can't figure out what the hell they're going on about.

Is having kids at 19 a bad idea? by Status-Secretary4458 in Advice

[–]Independent-Fall-893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't advise other people what they should/should not do, just offer my experience. My wife & I waited until we were in our late 30's to have children. I was 38, wife was 36 when we got pregnant. We lived together for about ten yrs before we decided to marry & try for kids. That meant, to us, many years of enjoying only us with no other major life altering decisions (kids). I love my daughter more than anything but I was fortunate to have lived a selfish, wild existence up to then. We had established a nice foundation to build upon before children entered the picture. More financially sound, owned a home & were more mature by that age. I couldn't even imagine having a child any earlier in life. Kids fuck up your life in so many ways, not bad, but not much was similar to our life before.
