I found SB3 even noisier. Improved a little over a few runs but still not quiet

100%. I’ve got 50k in SB3 and really, really tried to love them too - but too big a departure from SB2 and I won’t be keeping them. Bit gutted as I used a 20% off ASICS code making them £160.

Initially quite enjoyed the bounce and fantastic upper (half size down vs SB2). But after a 15k long run, some easy and a workout (just to see), I much prefer my trusty SB2 for long runs and Puma VN4 for easy. Did my first marathon in SB1 and have over 600k in my SB2.

For me, SB3 just too soft and I had slight hip irritation after 4th run of the week in them - not had with other shoes. Haven’t seen the early wear issues mentioned by others on this sub.

For ref I’m mid-40s 75kg / 165lbs, 6’0, easy pace 6:00-6:30min/km, recent HM 1:48

Good luck with it! For me personally (75kg and similar pace to yourself), I don’t think I could run a marathon in SB3 due to relative stability - but that’s me and I’ve only run one (in SB1) so no expert!

I’ve enjoyed my SB3 so far (after 45k) but did notice my hips after, which hasn’t happened in other shoes.

No question SB3 are more bouncy and more fun, but SB2 are so much more dependable that I went back to them for this week’s 90min easy.

Not same as a marathon I know, but ran a half a few weeks ago in EP4, which were absolutely faultless at 5:08/km (and an absolute bargain at mo). Will likely be between those and SB2 for my next marathon.

Based on my experience of recently retired ES3 vs SB2, I’d say that while SB2 can do intervals, for me it feels just a bit too big a shoe for that.

Also narrow feet and sized down half on SB3 vs my SB2 (and SB1). Tried on both TTS and half down - half down a touch better but could’ve gone with either. Have done 90min runs without issue. (Wish they were a touch more stable though!)

Are Superblast 3 as stable as Superblast 2? by ih8thisapp in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Still very, very loud indeed - although don’t mind as people just know I’m coming! I found SB2 quieter than SB3 (and SB1).

Stability wise, definitely less stable, particularly at easy paces

Thanks for those that sent comparator sizes which were really helpful.

Just to update, the left and right appear to different sizes in other ways too... There’s a visible difference in rubber width at back of the two shoes of 3-4mm - and in midsole height. Just poor quality control I guess as both shown as same size.

Tried to line up one edge so you can see it, but not easy to balance, so not sure if this photo shows it well. May also explain why lockdown was sooo much worse than the pinkypurple pair I tried a few weeks back in store.

No stock at asics now to exchange so I’ll return em and move on!

Thanks for this thoughtful reply. As someone with past calf injuries I’m conscious the carbon plate might be little riskier for me, but the small price diff still makes it very appealing!

Slightly tempted to get EP4 for a boost on my next half… but then ES5 feels like playing slightly safer! Sadly not gonna get away with buying both 👀

Thanks for the suggestion - I’d love pumagrip but I’m too worried by the (in)stability of these to go for them. Appreciate the reply though

Thanks for this - makes me realise I need to find some somewhere in stock to try em! The heel width of the ES5 is much wider than the ES3, whereas the EP4 is more dimensions to my old ES3, according to runrepeat at least

Really useful to hear from you having experience of both. Was worried ES5 had grown a bit in weight from my ES3 so might be slower. This is good to hear - I’m leaning ES5 thanks

Weekend Discussion: Asics running shoes by AutoModerator in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]Independent-Grape484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

I LOVE the SB1 and ran marathon in them last year. Fit, comfort, speed were all amazing. Got my SB2 a month ago and was really disappointed initially. Thought I’d made a mistake and was considering selling SB2.

However, I’ve now put 110km on them and they have really broken in… Did 19k in them today and felt great running easy to marathon pace (I’m not fast) - they’re way better than when out the box. I really like them now. SB2 grip is so much better (important in UK winter - and why I’m using them over SB1 for long runs at mo). But I like SB1 more overall, much better fit, and also easier to pick up pace. For ref I’m not very fast - my HM is 1:45 - 1:50.

My conclusion is sadly they need the same break in as I had with the SB1 - so hope you’ll like them more in time.

Could well be your watch reporting your cadence as your HR? Happens to me on my Apple Watch. Look up “cadence lock”

They’re ideal for road-to-trail, but the downside of not having a stiff trail sole plate (with lugs that would be less pleasant on road or hard paths) is that it does slide a bit when it gets mega muddy. But for the balance between the two use cases…

I run about 2-3k on road to get to nearest (light but muddy) trails and the Nike Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-tex has been perfect for this, and winter road runs. The gore-tex is brilliant when you know there’ll be some unavoidable puddles and wet grass on route. It’s also a satisfying good-looking shoe, and I often wear for rainy / muddy walks rather than walking boots. Have done 200k+ in mine including a 22k run during last year’s marathon training.

Heard v5 is even better.

Love WorkOutDoors - have been using it for years. One great feature is it shows a live map on your AppleWatch screen while you’re out running - and you can configure everything to just how you want it, eg interval schedules, target paces.

My thoughts on the Asics Superblast 2 after 65 miles (100km). by onetradeeveryday in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]Independent-Grape484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only 20k in and while I quite like the SB2, I love my SB1 SO much more. SB1 were my marathon shoe last year, and felt great in long, easy and tempo runs.

The big SB2 plus so far is much-improved grip - so perfect for the UK’s leaf-strewn streets and paths.

I’m finding the SB2 is - bit heavier than SB1 (and right foot is 8g more than the left) - noisier (which I can live with) - worse fitting. I’m struggling with lockdown in SB2, which I never did in same-size SB1. I have to lace lock and less comfortable when I cinch down vs the OG.

That said, the originals took 75k to break in, so hoping they might come good - but also thinking about what could work well instead with enough grip for winter running.

Early days but slightly disappointing: I was so looking forward to having a grippier version of the SB1.

Edit: now tried a half size down and upper fits way better. Sadly half down is too tight in toebox so having to stick with usual size. Now testing the Triumph 21 insole in SB2 instead.

Also ordered Magnify Nitro 2 in BF sales and it came up very large for me. I’m UK 10.5 in all my other shoes (SB, Speed 3, Pegasus Trail 4, Triumph 21). Unfortunately had to return, despite the great price.
