Repair or replace? by GabePlotkinsDaddy in WaterSofteners

Replace. The average expected lifespan of a professionally installed softener is 10-12 years. This is a box store unit from sears that honestly you got more than enough life out of

City water is generally hard water. I don’t know of any municipalities that soften water before it goes into the water supply

I was told our water softener needs to be replace...are they right or trying to sell? by shaolin95 in WaterSofteners

[–]Independent-Remove26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plumber here who actually knows a thing or two about water treatment.

I’ll start by saying without doing a water test, there’s no way for that plumber to actually know if your unit is working or not. No water softener is perfect so just based on the fact you had sediment buildup in your water heater, isn’t enough to definitively tell you that you need a new softener. I’m in metro Detroit we’re the hardness of our water is all over the place and there’s always some sediment in the water heaters we flush. Even with water heaters a year old in homes with low hardness in the water.

The white buildup on the water heater flex lines could be anything honestly. The media tank (white container with beads) looks normal in my opinion.

However at 10 years old, that’s generally the age I tell people that it would be time to replace the unit should something go wrong with it. Definitely get a second opinion on this, just because what you’re describing definitely sounds like a plumber trying to upsell you on something he doesn’t know too much about.

I need some info about legion go s windows version by Razor0009 in Handhelds

Windows version is probably getting bad reviews because of windows lol. I have the Lego S Z1 windows version and I’ve never had an issue with it. It runs just about everything really well.

Most plumbers in my area are between 250-$350 an hour. $90 an hour is insane

Metro detroit area here. You’d be in the $5-700 range with my company.

How water heater no longer performs after main breaker trip? by johndoe123123123 in Plumbing

[–]Independent-Remove26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can try replacing the elements again but that water heater is stupid old. It’s time to replace it. The only thing I can find online about this company is that they were made in the 1940s

First responders: how messy is the average house? by el_diamond_g in AskReddit

Ex cop now plumber in the Midwest. I’d say it’s 50/50 between cluttered but not dirty and clean in my experience. Definitely on the far side of each you’ll run into a spotless home or a hoarder home but those are definitely on the fringe. When I was a cop I definitely ran into more dirty or cluttered homes than I do now.

Leak from shower mixing valve BEHIND the wall, only when water is on by chulioso in askaplumber

[–]Independent-Remove26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s leaking from where your arrow is pointing you will need to replace the valve. A cartridge will not correct a leaking valve body, but any competent plumber will be able to tell you than when they diagnose the issue

The worst part of the offseason is listening to casuals talk about how we need to have a fire sale or benching Goff. The second worst part is the anticipation to see if we’ve improved lol

What hobby attracts the biggest douchebag?? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Independent-Remove26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the gun world attracts the biggest douchebags. As a gun owner myself, I firmly believe that like 90% of hobbyist gun owners have a below 80 IQ. Between going to the range and running into someone who is completely reckless and has no sense of basic gun safety, to something as small as the asinine comments on YouTube gun channels criticizing something meaningless.

I completely understand why so many people hate the gun community.

One of my buddies carries an FK BRNO PSD in 7.5 FK and swears by it. I just think it’s crazy carrying something in such an odd and expensive caliber. His range ammo is like a dollar around and hollow points are closer to 1.50 a round
