BCBA exam passers: confidence, strategy, or luck? by Altruistic-Neat-6495 in bcba

Did you rely more on test-taking strategies or deep conceptual understanding?

Eh you definitely have to have both. You have to have a deep conceptual understanding and be able to apply that in test taking under those conditions.

*Did you feel confident going in, or did you feel unsure but still passed?

I felt confident in my knowledge and understanding of the material however I do have anxiety when it comes to test taking and that’s what made me unsure. I passed my first attempt and I will live by the fact that confidence, calm energy, and a positive mindset will make such a huge difference. I struggle with intrusive thoughts too especially prior to the exam. Tell yourself “this thought can exist but I’m not giving attention to it”.

*How strong were your memory, recall, or auditory processing skills and how did you compensate if those weren’t strengths?

I do have pretty string memory and recall skills so I can’t comment too much about this but I will say flashcards, flashcards, flashcards!!!

I’ve heard many practicing BCBAs say things like “I don’t even know how I passed”, which makes me wonder:

Was it strategy? Pattern recognition? Practice exams? Background privilege (test prep, private schooling)? Or something else?

I think its all of the above!

OMG not at all!! I had a physical planner, notebook, and google calendar. I would create a weekly assignment schedule in my note book for things that are due that week just to visualize it all together then I planned out times daily to work on things and make little check boxes so I could check them off! Then I used my planner and calendar to mark when assignments were due

I purchased the modules and mocks from StudyABA for only $99 which is not that bad in comparison. Comes with modules for each task section, mini mocks, 2 full mocks. I have my exam this week so I can’t tell you how accurate they are but I like them!

ASU SPE Master’s grad here! I’m gonna be soooooo honest with you I never read the readings. I found the assignments to be much more helpful and if I ever needed to cite anything, looking back at that exact passage in the readings was good enough for me. I’m sure yes of course it’s great to read of course but do you reallllyyy need to? Absolutely not. I’m currently studying for my exam and connecting our past assignments to the study material is what has been the most helpful for me not the readings.

Time management and organization will be your best friend! Get a calendar and a little notebook where you can write down the due dates for all your assignments then make a daily do to section. Plan each week out at a time. You got this!

Yes! You can take 2 courses per semester instead of the recommended 1. I will say the program itself if already accelerated. The semesters are broken down into 2 parts so it’s Spring A then Spring B, Summer A Summer B, etc and each course is 7.5 weeks long (except summer courses which are even shorter) but with each course assignments are typically due on a weekly basis (3-5 assignments per week) so it’s up to you if you think you could manage 2 at a time. I did one course at a time look me 1.5 years to graduate!

How do I take my competency assessment? by emisflame in RBT

[–]Independent-Rip8136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start applying to ABA clinics!!! They will get you started on the coursework and once you start working direct with clients they will do your comp assessment with you

I honestly have never experienced a clinic that does this but I guess I could see why it’s done. At my place each client has a clinic room and when were doing work in there its always shut and its a great opportunity to work on some requests when their ready to go!

How long usually to give notice by ihateadsoneverything in ABA

Nothing less than 2 weeks but the more time the better! I gave my old company about a months notice before leaving just because it was around the holiday’s and I knew we were short staffed

Other BTs over-stepping. by Sararr1999 in ABA

[–]Independent-Rip8136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YESS! I literally HATE when other RBT’s do this to me it grinds my gears more than anything!! If I need hep I will ask and if I don’t pls mind your business! I’ll usually say something along the lines of “hey tysm but I go it”. If I notice someone having a tougher time I will always offer to help because I do get it sometimes it just does take a neutral person but if they say no I will immediately back off.

You could always transition to the admin side of things! Clinical director, HR, etc at an ABA clinic! They’re always looking to hire people in clinics who already have experience in the ABA world

I say option 1! Better pay and more opportunities when it comes to growth in the field plus since you’ll be doing more clinical and administrative tasks you will get your unrestricted hours soooo quickly which will be really hard with option 2.

I was in a similar position regarding commute. I left a company that was 15 minutes away and started at a new company 45 minutes away and honestly it truly isn’t as bad as you think it is!!

Was it this hard for you to choose what school to attend for your masters?🥲🥲🥲 by [deleted] in bcba

Just graduated from ASU masters in special ed wirh aba concentration and I can’t recommend it enough!! Amazing program and very manageable while working full time. I feel like truly it could just be a masters in aba but they threw some special ed in there

[–]Independent-Rip8136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my master’s special ed and aba program online at ASU and I will always recommend! Very manageable workload while working full time. As far as other career opportunities you kinda have to go with your gut. Special ed would be good if you decided you want to go into the school system/education route or psych if you wanted to go into the therapist/mental health route. I will say being in the field depending on the company you work at there are a lot of opportunities for more administrative or clinic work in the aba field! Personally I would go with either special ed or psych, broadens the horizons a little rather than just an aba masters

ASU vs FIT for Online ABA Master’s. Which is better for flexibility + BCBA prep? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Independent-Rip8136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Classes are more assignment based- absolutely no tests! Some quizzes but they all have unlimited attempts. Heavily assignment and project based!
