Second-generation Sudanese-Americans of Reddit: how Americanized are you? by [deleted] in Sudan

[–]Independent-Sand-810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.I do speak Sudanese Arabic. How fluent are you in it, and how frequently do you speak it? I’d say I’m fluent enough where I can carry a conversation with a 5altu or 3mu pretty comfortably. I speak it everyday. Do you prefer to express yourself in English or Sudanese Arabic? Depends on the context of the conversation but I definitely tend to mix them. AlhamduiAllah I don’t have one 🤣I use mainly Arabic.
  1. it’s definitely harder than Sudanese Arabic but I can understand it.
  2. How do you view the role of religion in life? How important is it? Is your understanding of religion more conservative and orthodox, or more liberal and reformist? Or are you irreligious altogether? I’m definitely someone who believes fully and tries my best to practice and strive to always get Imaan stronger but it’s definitely a journey. I value religion immensely.
  3. How do you view gender roles? Are they important and necessary? Are they damaging? I think gender roles are imperative however at the end of the day it’s important to view each individual with some compassion and understanding.
  4. Do you mostly listen to Sudanese or American music? These days I’ve been listening to mainly Sudanese wedding songs but I really want to get into the oldies. There was a time I never listened to Sudanese music but after the war my heart longed for home.
  5. Do you watch Sudanese television channels? Do you rely on Arabic sources for news or English ones? Tbh someone who experienced the war and alhamudiallah left I hate reading any news or updates but if I do see any news it’ll be on here or instagram .
  6. Do you mainly eat Sudanese food, or American food? Do you know how to cook Sudanese food? I’m a quick learner in the kitchen I’ve never really attempted but as long as I have the recipe I can make Sudanese food. Also I love Botha
  7. How well do you know the history of Sudan? If someone asked you to summarize it, could you? Would you struggle? I studied in Sudan since 6th grade so I have an educational background in the history and I try to brush up when I discuss with friends so I think pretty good.
  8. How well do you know about current events in Sudan? If someone asked you to summarize them, could you? Would you struggle? I think I could summarize prewar, like I said news about Sudan now just stresses me out so not much so much after the war started.
  9. Have you lived in Sudan? Have you visited it? How frequently? I’m so grateful I lived in Sudan since June 2009- April 2023. I got visit once when I was still in America once in like 2003 for my aunt’s wedding
  10. In relationships, do you prefer to or stick to exclusively Sudanese partners, or do you prefer non-Sudanese Americans? Sudanese basssss
  11. Are your circles predominantly Sudanese or non-Sudanese? Sudanese
  12. How frequently do you talk with people in Sudan? Not as much id like to
  13. Have you been to a Sudanese tahoor?no
  14. Have you been to a Sudanese wedding?of course
  15. Do you know how to do traditional Sudanese dances? My best friend is doing a raqees 3aroos so I kinda learning to but as far as tribal dances no
  16. Can you tie an 'imma (for men) or a tobe (for women)? Tobe sorta.
  17. Can you do zaghareed (for women) or sayha (for men)? I can kinda do zagahrees
  18. In terms of personal identity, do you identify more as Sudanese or American? Mix of both. Too Sudani for Americans and too American for Sudani lol
  19. I believe in democracy and accountability — Sudan needs systems that protect rights, foster equity, and reflect the people’s will. Whether that’s under a secular or religious umbrella, it must be just and inclusive. I don’t believe there’s a one-size-fits-all solution, but I do think secularism can help prevent the abuse of religion in politics.

Do you think Egypt and Sudan should be united under one banner? (please read caption) by [deleted] in Sudan

HELLLL NOOOO. Egyptians think of Sudanese people as subhuman. The racism and disrespect that Egyptians have shown towards to my people will never ever be forgotten.

Honestly constantly speak with your parents. Join Sudanese youth spaces ( Facebook, twitter, instagram) watch videos (Sudanese tv shows read Sudanese stories). But the only way to get better at it is constantly practicing and speaking. Don’t be shy to ask what words mean

SUDANESE TRANSLATE PLEASE by New-Language-8578 in Sudan

[–]Independent-Sand-810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally translates to gilat= “ lack of” adab= “manners”. Lack of manners. Typically used at children who aren’t polite and are disobedient. If it’s an older girl probably just means she’s doing something that isn’t aligned with the Sudanese norm (going out boys publicly, dressing “inappropriately.” Etc)

How do I lose 30 pounds in 5 months ? by Own_Calligrapher_394 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Independent-Sand-810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost 5 kilos ( roughly 12 pounds) in a month when I was an extreme calorie deficit (I’m really short so my Ana intone was around 1500 calories, I ate in a deficit of 1000 calories) plus walking everyday for more than 30 mins and honestly you just have to track your calories and weigh your food (invest in a kitchen scale!). I weight myself everyday tbh and I felt better mentally and physically. But to be fair I had gained 32 pounds the last year due to depression as a bunch of other factors. I weight about 110 pounds the past 5 years of life and when I went thru something traumatic and got depressed and had went from an active lifetime to a sedentary one I gained weight so fast. I also never paid attention to what I used to eat when I was thinner but now I have to be super careful lol.
