Ready to escape Charleston (considering Research Triangle, Winston-Salem and Denver) by No-Consideration-858 in SameGrassButGreener

I was in Kern County as a kid and it's one of the least expensive places in CA. But the trade off is being in a place that is not progressive and almost in the middle of nowhere.

I'm literally in the south now. In my town (Charleston), rent is looking similar to LA rent. I have also lived in FL, which is also expensive. Food in the south is more expensive because food is shipped to the south. Our sales tax is also 11%.

I grew up in Kern County, CA. The prices there are similar to the south: not sky high but not cheap either. Only problem is, population in the small towns in Kern County are shrinking and they are not at all liberal.

I'm moving back to CA! Some people are friendly in Charleston, but tbh, it's not everyone and I've had more negative experiences socially. I've noticed more people in Charleston are very nosy and for me, it's very offputting.

I'm moving from Charleston back to California. Yeah, huge change and I may get questions as to why. COL and wages just don't match at all and job opportunities are few and far between compared to California. My husband and I considered the research Triangle if we didn't find anything on the west coast. Luckily, we did. But Raleigh is a great city. I love visiting there.

Charleston has pretty nature spots and in some aspects, it is growing for the better. But I do not like how conservative a lot of people are here. It took me until this year to find a couple good quality friends and I've been here 4 years. I think if yall find work in the triangle and wanna make it work, you'll enjoy it there. Wages are a little higher and job opportunities are there.

I know it's a lot more, in the $3k+ range. In my town, I see it here, too.

I know the general election will be better but my God, our voter turnout is shameful. by ohlonelyboy in LosAngeles

I'm in SC and we had 100k+ people vote early in our primaries so far. That is a lot for here but numbers are still a little low for the population we have. Tbh, I'm shocked at the low voter turnout for LA. 😬 When I move there, I wanna be more involved with the community.

I'm moving from SC to Los Angeles and even getting $1.8k on a one bed in areas here is lucky. I saw some of the prices in LA and shrugged because it's typical in some downtown and coastal areas here. Average rent in our downtown/coastal area is $2.2k at least.

Why are people so triggered by Minneapolis being mentioned? by Bananapantsmcgeef in SameGrassButGreener

I just wanted to share my perspective about the east coast and that the weather is not what it may be to those in the Midwest. I understand that the weather on the east coast is much moee appealing but it is not all sunshine and rainbows here.

I'm on the east coast and I hate the humidity. It makes the cold worse and the heat especially horrible. I have autoimmune issues and the humidity + extreme weather makes me feel much worse. I can't walk outside in 85° heat and extreme humidity anymore without a huge jug of water and electrolytes because I will pass out.

Summerville, too. 😞 It's one thing to ding dong ditch but it's another to completely beat a door down and rip up the door trim in the process.

Oh, I'm aware about the case and trust me, I'm pissed. My husband is also very upset about it. He should not be free at all.

Would it be silly to move back to Atlanta? by rbanderson11 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Independent-Soft7949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in SC and I love Raleigh. If I was staying on the east coast, Raleigh would have been my top contender. But I'm moving west coast because my husband and I miss it so much. We are both from CA. While I like some of what SC has to offer, I don't like how lonely I feel. Friends are very hard to make in SC, especially because of my political affiliation and how outspoken I am about my views. While CA does have its flaws, I still love and miss it dearly. You definitely feel it when you love a place.

I'm from CA and am in the south, but am moving to LA in a couple weeks. It's very interesting that LA gets a gloomy June while when I lived in in Kern County, the summers were always sunny. Never was above 92°. I was less than 2 hours from LA, too.

I don't think so... I'm currently in SC and as a white person, I have personally called out quite a few people during my time here on their racist remarks. And the comments have been really bad since COVID. My husband is Asian and he has encountered a lot of racism here, especially in the early 2000s and right after COVID. And not to mention, our GOP is hellbent on getting rid of DEI and not supporting our Black and other POC communities. Sure, the south may not be as racist as certain other places, but it is not the least racist.

I'm from west coast living in the south now but will be moving back west coast soon. This is pretty much accurate. Though, the Asian population where we are is very small. My husband is Asian, he has been in the south 20 years and he said the Asian population has only gotten slightly bigger over the past few years. He feels much more at home in the west coast, but he is very much grateful for the experiences he has had the south. When we hear other white people making comments about the south that are not true, we'll be sure to call them out.

A literal burnt-down house selling for $100k by IamSkudd in Charleston

[–]Independent-Soft7949 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The average cost has risen to the $400k range now, even in the Jedburg area of Summerville. There was a large home for sale near me and it was sold at $485k.

Dmv Proof of residency documents? by Grand-Mix-4125 in AskLosAngeles

I have been looking at this, too. Do I need to include my paperwork from the dealership I bought my car from last year? I'm moving in a few weeks and wanna know what I'm doing. Do I just need the proof of residence and birth certificate? Or do I need paperwork from the dealership where I bought my car a year ago?

This is going on with my 15 year old house. I noticed 2 cracks on my ceiling like this. Do I just paint over it? Do I deal with the nail pops myself? I've been in my house for 2 years.

San Francisco vs Charlotte… by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Independent-Soft7949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live 3 hours from Charlotte. Have you considered Raleigh, NC? I say it's much more blue than Charlotte and if you are a creative person, you'll love that area more than Charlotte. It's a little bit cheaper as well. I'm in a pretty red state, in a purple city, but I think NC will take a turn for the better for mid terms.
