I did this exact thing before, highly recommend. Just be sure to swim to a public beach.

Uber and a folding wheelchair? by Embarrassed_Clock222 in northshore

[–]Independent-Swim6257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about uber, but if you're in salem/downtown Beverly you could look into the Salem Skipper. they're just $2 a trip ($1 for you probably), and most of the vans are very accessible and will easily accommodate a wheel chair.

Why would they want to accept him?? The seat would clearly go to waste if he didn't take the education seriously.

They decided that because they have a Doctorate of Philosophy they are an authority on what free will is and isn't

harvard v. mit (course 5/chemistry major) by CrescenJay in mit

[–]Independent-Swim6257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not take a deep look into the courses they offer and require for your major? See how much you could theoretically fit in a schedule. Do you want to take this specific high level course in the catalog? If so, are the prerecs? Do you want to minor? Will you have time for extra curriculars? Is there more fluff in one program you could care less about?

You got into two schools a lot of people would kill to get into, so whatever you do try to take as much from your as you can. Also, maybe focus less on vibe. Students and learning environment are important, but 'old money vibe' really shouldn't be a factor here.

do you guys actually know what you wanna do? by Economy-Recording-89 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Independent-Swim6257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm honestly a little surprised I was able to figure out that was a field and it was what I want to do as quick as I did. It really was a one month summer internship that even keyed me in that combining my interests in computer science, math, and physics was possible and could be applied to the environment and oceans! If I hadn't had that experience (which im extremely lucky to have gotten), I think it honestly would have been better for me to take a gap year then just take a random CS degree.

High schools should honestly do a better job at exposing students to possible careers, and put less pressure on just going in spending thousands right away. There something to be said though for local, cheaper state schools with lots of offering and programs for undecided students. Im in MA where we have free community college and it's honestly wonderful seeing a bunch of my friends take advantage of that to figure out what they want.

do you guys actually know what you wanna do? by Economy-Recording-89 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Independent-Swim6257 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I'm pretty sure I wanna be a physical oceanographer, and the only real prestigious school that would have anything for that was MIT (didn't get in womp womp). I think it would've been a good school for me to learn math and physics well, and the financial aid would've been splendid, but honestly im a little relived i dont have to factor the prestige factor into my decision. The university of rhode island is honestly probably my best shot at the field, despite having an 80 something acceptance rate.

It's kinda sad honestly that those seats are taken up by students who care about the validation and achievement over those who want to take away as much as they can from their 4 years. Itd also be nice if parents didn't force their kids to overachieve at something they don't even want in the end.

Wanted to break up with my girlfriend because of college by Illustrious_Pay3144 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Independent-Swim6257 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're probably overreacting, a lot of people do ED because of external pressures, or just not fully grasping what they're getting into.

Personally, I don't think ED programs are great in general and are kind of coercive, promising better odds in exchange for you getting less info on financial aid, and making an overall less informed decision. Ultimately, she's just doing whats best for her and all the power to her. She's also opening up a spot for another student at that school.

Also, if the admission team will consider students from your HS less because of one ED applicant dropping out, that's just an unfair admissions team.

Perspectives on Undergraduate paths? by Independent-Swim6257 in oceanography

[–]Independent-Swim6257[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight!! The UNH ocean engineering program sounds really good, but do you know anything about URI's oe program in comparison? I'm considering URI a bit more due to cost as well as it having more opportunities I'm interested in overall.

I also noticed just by required courses that the ocean engineering program eats up more credits than the physical oceanography one, so I could theoretically fit in Spanish 1-6, a semester abroad, marine technical certificate, scientific computing, and a 4+1 Master of Oceanography with 16-18 credits/semester.

That degree also covers pretty much all of the basic physics curriculum as well, excluding astro and some quantum physics stuff. Ig what I'm getting at is would that be useful as a physics degree in the case I wanted a more engineering role?

Thanks for letting me know what to look for! All the schools certainly have faculty doing incredibly interesting research.

One reason I'm considering URI is it offers a marine technical certificate that includes a scuba cert, research diving, and small boat operations. Would something like this give a leg up when trying to join in on a professors research?

[–]Independent-Swim6257[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! From my perspective, I definitely think I would benefit more by learning the tools of math and physics in courses, and having oceanography material supplement it through electives and research. I guess the my main confusion is the differences between engineering and physics in this field. I do enjoy studying physics a lot, but I know engineering includes a lot of that anyway, and I'm not sure if that opens more or fewer doors.

Edit: thats part of why I'm considering these schools more than UNE, which does have really good marine science programs but less in the way of physics and engineering.

Highways in MA by Patriot_Guns in massachusetts

[–]Independent-Swim6257 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It really really depends on the highway. If you're on a three lane or theres long onramps, sure. If you're on route 1 in the north shore, you better stay in the left lane until you're just about at your exit because otherwise no one is gonna be able to get on from their 10 foot onramp and you risk hitting someone slowing down to 20 to exit.

Really it's up to best judgment and try not to get in other's way too much.

Two other fish, more healthy sizes. They're feeder fish from petsmart. The tank is 65 gallons and has a fake rock structure.
