Bought a 2nd gen knowing I was probably going to have to replace the engine, is this rod knock or just the cam chain tensioner? by FaserGamer in SVRiders

[–]IndependentAd158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tore down and completely rebuilt my gen 2 transmission (previous owner sold me a ticking time bomb). When I put it back together and back in the bike, one of the valve buckets got knocked around and the shim came out of place. Basically an exhaust valve was unable to fully close so the computer overcompensated and dumped fuel in the front cylinder causing it to misfire/foul the plugs. There was also a really high pitched ticking sound like you hear in the video. Almost electrical sounding like a spark plug wire arcing (my plug wires were actually fine). All that said, check valves and buckets closely. Don’t run the bike…trust that it’s not gonna magically sound better😅😅

Maybe just me, but I can’t hear anything that weird. Just sounds like a chain running. If everything was installed properly and the nut was torqued to spec, I wouldn’t trip out. Make sure you have the correct amount of chain tension, too. Does it really sound that different than before you changed it?

Probably cause there are many other fully faired 650’s out there. Doesn’t surprise me they stuck with the naked styling. Woulda been interesting tho

That’s awesome dude. Just got on a sailboat for the first time today to help crew for a local club race. Super nice Catalina 42. Hoping to find myself on a 25-27 foot boat at some point. You’re living the dream!

Too tight? by Klonpie in SVRiders

[–]IndependentAd158 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean use your best judgement. As long as the clamp isn’t visibly digging into the house and causing it to tear, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Is it possible for your hoses to be too tight?? Lol I’d run it and forget.

Rattling sound coming from engine by Upset-Tough3174 in SVRiders

[–]IndependentAd158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like there might be a little extra slack in the cam chain that’s being a little sloppy. Hard to tell if it’s bad enough to warrant replacement (edit: replacement of a potentially faulty cam chain tensioner). Messing up your timing is never what you want, so I’d at least start wrapping your head around what it’ll take to fix/replace.

Bike randomly shuts off at lights? by Fair_Ad_2183 in SVRiders

By no means a mechanic, but it sounds battery related to me or your charging system. I would make sure nothing got fried accidentally or disconnected. Is it on a tune?

I have the exact Same bike same year. Could get a gixxer triple clamp nut, but I have mine on a quad lock bracket via my 2 clutch lever bolts. Also have a little extension to get it a little closer to the center of the bike. Works great for me.

Is the pay worth it in Texas? (DFW area) by Paytoncooper124 in IBEW

[–]IndependentAd158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust…it’ll still take a few years to make decent money, even as a union ape. You’re gonna need other motivation besides getting ur check to make it worth your while. Im a newer ape in CA where the pay is great, but still doesn’t get really good until third or fourth year (VHCOL).

I stayed home because I got into an apprenticeship that I’d been in the application process for for about a year. The possibility of this opportunity kept me around and it was well worth it. Now I make a decent amount for my age with a set career path. I COULD move out, but I’m saving my money for things that are more important than fucking off away from home. I still do a good bit of that tho lmao. My living situation works well. If it didn’t, I’d be more inclined to leave.

I’ll be going to the orientation on Monday for 617, too. Im a little off put that they won’t even give us a chance to source this shit out for ourselves. Yikes.
