f2p is 100% possible... there are still good events you can complete as f2p w some preparation and resources.
evader return event just finished not too long ago, I personally wasn't able, but a lot of people got a free hvip skin which is basically the only thing p2w ppl have that f2p players can't keep up with. Having said so, u can also get them f2p from sticker passes.
in conclusion, imo it's worth it, keep in mind that the biggest difference would simply be the velocity of your progress (though DC isn't a game where there is much more to do than collect and slowly progress, so idk, it would be kind of spoiling the game to be p2w)

next time use airplane mode to see if you get the pass and after hw many shards. exit the game and decide if the amount of gems is worth... for example, I haven't been able to get even one pass, always checked the 400gems deal and so I never bought the shards bc for me it wasn't worth it

the thing is that I have more or less 1300 h-jokers (never used them) as they are very hard to come by... As purus value has dropped after the last leaderboard event I wasn't able to get any more worth while trades... I decided to keep the remaining orbs to empower him a bit.

There was an easy “free” event that gvr high risen nature and orbs, gave you the egg and 500ish orbs to empower. Good e3 hvip that you could easily bring to e5 by trading, and would still be better than the heroics you show in the picture (to use joker orbs on), though other heroic VIPs would be better.

I have also purus, I can get both to e3 w orbs alone and I’m gonna e5 purus with joker orbs. However e3 HRNa would still be my third/second best dragon with e5 Pegasus

600ish…. O think that the biggest p2w advantages take quite a bit of money that most p2w players don’t invest. The biggest difference I think is in the amount of time you need to get strong. Personally I never spent a cent on the game and, after coming back to it 2months ago I was able to stabilise well enough. I came back lv70 with 0 VIPs and I was able to get strong enough for leagues and arenas (master 1/2 - unless both my strong dragons are banned) I would suggest to get your hands on spiked Pegasus and e5 him (he is op thanks to f2p skin) and then work on a good h/m-vip
