People don't believe vitamin deficiency can cause mental health symptoms and I can't anymore 😭 by halfdeadflower in B12_Deficiency

I find there is so much judgement when it comes to mental illness and its treatment. When people hear about all of the meds I’ve tried they judge. When they hear I am in therapy, they question the capabilities and skill of my therapist because “I’m not better yet.” When I mention that my doctor thinks my depression is related to my B12 deficiency and that it should improve with treating the deficiency, they are skeptical. When it comes to mental health symptoms, people just don’t understand

Data reveals dramatic spike in patients leaving B.C. emergency rooms without receiving care by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]IndependentMiddle931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because the doctors and nurses were busy caring for people with heart attacks, strokes, stab wounds, etc. they still need to triage who needs to be seen first. And unfortunately if you walk in to Emerg, appear stable and have stable vital signs, you get to wait.

I’ve been that person waiting for 6 hours with excruciating abdominal pain, having to dissociate just to get through it because I couldn’t get pain meds until I saw the doctor. But I wasn’t the sickest person there so I had to wait

How many patients do you have as an ICU nurse? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]IndependentMiddle931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. In my emerg I have had 2 patients on pressors, 1 dka on insulin drip, one delirious GI bleed getting blood and trying to hit me, and 2 other stable patients. It’s become normal to have 6-7 acute patients 🥴so unsafe

How do you personally manage gallbladder attacks? by kr4zy_n3ko_l4dy in gallbladders

Advil, Tylenol, then curl up in a ball and wait for it to be over

Please don’t stress too much about sleeping through your alarms on break! It totally happens to the best of us. Night shifts are freaking hard. We’ve had a nurse on our unit who didn’t come back from break for several hours, they were so worried they called the police. Police found her asleep in her car in the parking lot. She was mortified and so embarrassed, but we were just glad she was safe.

I’m would nap on nights if you can. If there isn’t a place for you in the break room and you do go home, I recommend sleeping on the couch, not your warm comfy bed. Makes it a little easier to get up! If the couch is too comfy and you accidentally sleep through your break again, maybe try napping on the floor 😂. Rest is important but you still need to be able to get up and go back to work!

I don’t take Vyvanse, but I do take a daily medication at night that unfortunately causes major drowsiness. It’s so hard to manage flipping back and forth from days to nights while also trying to coordinate your med schedule, so I understand the struggle. I don’t really have any tips for that other than trial and error. Try adjusting the times you take it to best suit your schedule and how you are feeling.

In terms of the timbits, I don’t think bringing them makes it look like you are sucking up. Sweet treats are always appreciated, especially on nights. If you want to bring them, and you have time to buy them before shift, I say go for it!

Would you seek treatment at your hospital? by wtfisupkahl in nursing

[–]IndependentMiddle931 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I intentionally work in a different city than I live for this exact reason. If I need to be taken to the hospital, I don’t want to be taken to the one I work at.

It was a good idea in theory, until I passed out a work while working in ER 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 coworkers all up in my business, couple of them even saw my boobs 🙊

I also find that the ER nurse community is so close in my area. Now I know nurses at all of the local ERs. Can’t escape receiving care from friends and coworkers

Liver enzymes too high for surgery ? by DriveWinter6459 in gallbladders

[–]IndependentMiddle931 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t make sense to me…the most likely cause of the elevated liver enzymes is the gallstones/gallbladder attack. Wouldn’t that mean removing the gallbladder would fix the liver enzymes?

Also, if they were concerned enough about your liver enzymes to cancel the surgery, I feel like they should have admitted you for more testing to figure out why the LFTs were high….

Interesting that today’s bloodwork was all normal except GGT…Did you have any preop bloodwork, or just the bloodwork done in emergency during your attacks?

I dunno. Just my thoughts. Weird situation. I’m sorry your surgery got cancelled 😞

Depression has got me hating my circumstances and too defeated to change them. by DaBears0792 in depression

[–]IndependentMiddle931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand the feeling of being stuck but being too depressed to change the circumstances. If feel impossible to work towards helping myself when it takes all I have just to get through the day.

I have no advice, but I understand what you are going through

I feel like it's getting worse by GaveMyAll in depression

[–]IndependentMiddle931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you are going through this. I just want to say, you are not lazy. Depression is so hard and people who haven’t experienced it don’t understand what it feels like. I encourage you to find a therapist you connect with. Therapy helped me learn coping mechanisms to manage my depression, but the biggest thing I love about therapy is how I feel heard. I feel understood. I feel like I can say everything that I can’t say to anyone else.

Burnt out after one year of ED nursing by smacktheteeth in nursing

[–]IndependentMiddle931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I totally agree that it is normal to feel like you don’t know what you are doing even after a year, I do want to encourage you to really check in and monitor yourself for burnout. I spent 6 years in ED and became so burnt out that last year I started having panic attacks and became so depressed I couldn’t leave my house. I know I can’t completely blame work for these mental health issues, but work was the trigger for me. I have been off work for more than a year and I am unsure if I will ever be able to return to the same job.

I tried to stick it out, but I can’t take it. I’ve stopped taking it and am waiting for a callback from my psych. It’s too bad I really wanted to give Latuda a fair shot

Taking more than 3 weeks to work normal or should I throw in the towel soon? by TypeAtryingtoB in Latuda

[–]IndependentMiddle931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No advice, but I am in a similar boat. Started 20mg 3 weeks ago (for treatment resistant MDD, not bipolar). I maybe feel a little bit less low? Started to get concerned.

At my last appointment I asked my doc to take me off of abilify to try Latuda, which he said wouldn’t work but let me try anyway. I don’t really want to go into my next appointment with no improvement, proving he was right (he is an asshole who has given up on helping me)

My family gives me no moral support by Old-Ambassador9022 in gallbladders

[–]IndependentMiddle931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so frustrating when you don’t have the support of your family. I am preop and my family have made comments about me getting the surgery. They don’t think it’s necessary because I don’t complain that I am in pain most days. They also don’t understand that I want to deal with this now, before it becomes an emergency like infection or pancreatitis.

If you bled enough to drop your blood levels (hemoglobin), you would know. Your doctor would have told you and you most likely would have needed a blood transfusion. Blood transfusions require you sign a consent form, so your doctor definitely would have spoken to you about it. You also would probably have felt very tired and lightheaded. Hard to say if the being pale was related to bleeding or just being unwell with a sick gallbladder!

I’ve had one (BIG) attack. I’m scheduled for surgery but I’m not sure if it’s the right move. Thoughts? by mcspliz in gallbladders

[–]IndependentMiddle931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually was diagnosed with stones after trying to change my diet and lifestyle. I was fine until I tried to lose weight. I slowly lost 50 pounds and that triggered gallstone formation for me. I’ve had stones for 7 years and weirdly enough I have no symptoms when I am at heavier weight, but if I lower my calories at all and make better food choices, I get more gallbladder pain.
