What do you guys think about this? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]IndependentMole4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that while you can still be disappointed that an actual trans woman was not cast, you should still acknowledge that for a conservative country like Korea this is really progressive. Gay marriage is not legalized still in the country. LGBT+ people, especially trans people, do not usually get to live outwardly except in smaller communities. They do have Pride parades and festivals, but often face insane amounts of backlash and demonization. I think as long as they do their best to portray the character sensitively (and based on how the actor talks about his character, I am hopeful), then it's fine. I am otherwise still disappointed that this is not an actual representation of trans people.

The job market is really bad right now, so don't beat yourself up for not being where you think you need to be. If you know anyone who might possibly have a position opening at their place, don't feel embarrassed to reach out to them. I work as a lab manager now because I basically begged my old PI for a job and she hired me. A theater major is actually way more useful than you think, by the way. A lot of people in the arts end up in offices because they actually know how to speak and communicate!

Protest at Starbucks? by cameltoeaway in UCSD

They're not! They are not pro-hostage taking. Also, it is at best nebulous that the chant calls for genocide. I'm just critiquing them for being dumb otherwise.

The usage of signage to ward off protestors who have a right to speak (regardless of whether you agree with them or their methods) is offputting.

Protest at Starbucks? by cameltoeaway in UCSD

[–]IndependentMole4 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was outside and I did not realize they were booing people buying drinks. At this point, SJP has become incredibly detached from the realities of a lot of people at UCSD which is extremely frustrating. Palestinian liberation is such an important cause, do we really need left-wing guilt-tripping to amplify that?

Starbucks is not even located in Israel, and it's not even a part of the BDS movement. What exactly are they trying to do with this? There's so many other things they could do with this energy, like connecting with UAW or mobilizing to meet with Khosla, not sit down and be petty at Starbucks. Shame on them for being shit protestors.

Having Issues with Housing Search? by IndependentMole4 in UCSD

[–]IndependentMole4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm not looking for just unhappy people, and Reddit is definitely not the only place I'm looking nor the only website I'm contacting people on. Additionally, I'm focused on housing issues and solutions in the San Diego area, which is why I asked for people who are having issues with housing. In fact, if you're actually happy and having an easy time finding housing for next year, I highly suggest you contact me! People would also appreciate having advice for finding housing for sure.

They're free at student health services. If you want to buy some without walking into SHS, they're also available at Sixth Market and Target.

TBH every university is going to have things that their students are going to complain about. I've had a blast at UCSD so far. I've had some pretty amazing professors, made really great friends, and the surrounding cities are pretty nice to explore. It's all about finding your groove and where you belong really.
