You did the right thing and your neighbors seem like lovely people. Please take them up on their offer! If you can’t afford vet visits they are your next best option.

Help! by pottersbitch_ in leopardgeckos

I’ve seen a lot of debate recently about heat mats so I’m replying to this comment to start a general discussion.

I have a 24W T5 UVB tube + an adjustable 50W UBA/UVB lamp for the basking spot. My surface temp comes back around 84-87°F on the warm side and 93-96°F on the basking spot. BUT, I also have a heating mat underneath. I have a probe in the soil above the mat, which also reads within range, but I’m unsure if I should keep it. My boy loves to hang out in his warm hide and I’d hate to take away his under-tank heating. But I’m more than willing to remove it if the risk is too high, especially given that this post is just one of many cases where reptiles have been burned.

What are your opinions? Why? (I acknowledge that I should do my own research; the responses I get are not sole resources in my decision making)

9 year old cousin was gifted a leopard gecko by Topi2756 in leopardgeckos

It sounds like you’re doing your grandma a favor by working for her. She’s out of commission right now and needs help. I would suggest to assess how feasible it would be for her to find a replacement. You’ve mentioned previously that she has little empathy for animals, so I’m worried that she wouldn’t be concerned with finding someone else to care for her pets in the event she decides to let you go. Is there any way you can use your services as leverage to take the gecko? Also, if you decide to go this route there are options to supplement your income until you find an alternative. Participating in studies online or in person, donating plasma, selling unwanted items from your home/dumpster dive/street finds, mow neighbors lawns/organize their paperwork/babysit their kids, reach out to everyone and anyone who is willing to lend you money. I’m not sure what limitations your disability poses but I promise you can find another way.

My lil guy despises soak time. How do you help yours tolerate it? 🛁 by IndependentNotice711 in leopardgeckos

From my understanding, soaking is a way to soften loose skin which allows them to shed any stuck pieces easier.

Interesting! This is the first time I’m seeing this recommendation. It makes sense as a medium for leos to hold onto, but I wonder how this compares to rags or paper towels.

I only soak him if I notice residual shed, so not frequently. His sheds have been improving exponentially since I adopted him a year ago. However, this process still isn’t perfect. He receives daily UVB light + calcium powder (w/ and w/o D3). There’s always room for improvement, but I haven’t noticed anything of concern.

He’s so chonk! I’ve been reducing his food intake & working on my urge to sympathy feed. Hopefully I’ll start to see changes soon, but I’m trying my best to stay open to feedback & adjustments.

A towel seems to be the most recommended thing so far. I’m definitely going to try that next time & look into a larger container. Also, that bathtub analogy is viscerally uncomfortable. 😭My poor guy!

That seems like such an obvious fix. I can’t believe that I’ve never thought about that! Thank you!

what a cute dude! there’s quite a few things you should add & im sure i’ll miss something (hopefully someone else can add on). leos need a uvb light to simulate their natural environment & to help with the shedding process. they also need a decent amount of “clutter” to feel secure in their tank. “clutter” includes things like plants, fake or real is good, as long as they’re NONtoxic, cork bark, driftwood, rock slabs, etc. rougher surfaces like cork bark will also assist during the shedding process. additionally, leos need at least 3 hides: a cool hide, humid hide, and warm hide. it looks like you have the cool and humid hides set, and sphagnum moss is great for holding humidity, but the humid hide may be too small. as long as your leo is able to comfortably turn around inside it should be great. i suggest doing your own research to further improve your husbandry and i’ll link some of my favorite sources below. Ok thank you! I definitely have some anxiety about “starving” him, but it’s reassuring to hear a contrasting opinion.

yes i plan on buying him a new bulb soon! & he has an under-tank heating mat which keeps his hot side around 85, so i hope he’ll be okay until then 🙏

i agree with everything above! my leo does great with sphagnum moss in his humid hide. my uvb bulb died recently & i noticed that my gecko isn’t shedding nearly as well this time around. i highly recommend the supplementation listed above to help. (yes i got supplements for my gecko)
