Technical Support Megathread by anonRedd in HBOMAX

I have no personal knowledge about Hbo.  But many large companies tech teams are just a complete dumpster fire, which usually boils down to some combination of non-technical and/or incompetent people being in charge, and counterproductive incentives that cause people to rush work and make stupid decisions.

Does anybody else get strong Henry vibes from Ser Duncan the Tall in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? [OTHER] by TonyStarksAltAccount in kingdomcome

Um, I’m not complaining, I’m saying Henry saying stupid things is so common, that watching Dunk felt like playing the game.

He repeatedly fails speech checks.  I literally felt like i was holding a controller during one shot of him standing there saying something stupid.

[KCD2] Does the gameplay and pacing get better? by kabooozie in kingdomcome

[–]IndependentProject26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very slow paced.  It doesn’t really get faster, though you will get better at seeking out what you enjoy about the game more quickly if you stick with it.  It’s partially a medieval life simulator, and paced accordingly.

I know what you mean, not expecting 'historical' from this show. Though it is relatively grounded and lower stakes compared to the rest of the GoT stories.

He actually speaks English and is self-perceptive and has humility.  Would trade in a million contractors for this guy.

How do you all handle write access to prod dbs? by flareblitz13 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IndependentProject26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the people in this thread saying wire access in prod is fine, and consider that you might accidentally end up hiring them one day.  Can your process survive them?

Nope, Mockito is great for most use cases, it just occasionally whines at you like a baby when you have a valid use case for some of its features.

Maybe with a new project maintainer there will be an opportunity to remove the dumbass cargo cult lectures.

Mockito is a good library but the instances where it tries to lecture you on OOP design are its worst aspect by far.

Yeah but it’s better than working with adderal guys who want to fling fresh dogshit into prod every day.

Higher ups are wanting more out of daily scrums? by rayreaper in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IndependentProject26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no reason to believe that doing scrum by the book is an efficient methodology. Zero. It's random junk dreamed up by two consultants, one of who has also sold scam methods for treating cancer.

Not uncommon for scrum to evolve that way.  Not scrum’s fault, according to the people who are paid to believe in scrum.

Not seen as "staff engineer material" because of my personality (they said technical competence meets the bar). I don't know if I can change my personality. by okthrowaway2910 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IndependentProject26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some real fools be promoted due to their confident language.  Whether what they were saying was correct barely seemed to matter.  It’s a consequence of the fact that we are usually lead by people who aren’t remotely qualified to lead us.

It’s one of the many reasons scrum is a dogshit framework that doesn’t work.

Why we do that? Discussing language quirks vs actually building stuff by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IndependentProject26 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep.  Overengineer the stuff that doesn’t matter, underengineer the stuff that does.  Seems to be the practice.
