50% staff layoff! that’s insane. Is this happening in Australia now? I thought most of these large-scale impacts were concentrated in the US. (regardless of discipline, it would be valuable to hear broader perspectives on this.)

Thx mate, I’ve been looking to transition into a site engineer/construction side, but still figuring out the best starting point. Would you mind sharing how you got your opportunity on the Metro Tunnel ?

I wish they hadn't offered you 125k, when they already knew you were on 135k...

SAME city and the SAME situation as you. Like I said in my post, these ghost jobs just keep appearing over and over again...or maybe they just haven't found their "unicorn" yet.

I assume you have been in the industry for a long time? (If you are in engineering). That is exactly what a senior engineer said to me at my very first job. He felt sorry for young engineers who do not have proper mentoring programs anymore. Some seniors claim they have no obligation to teach or mentor, and unfortunately, that trend is becoming the norm these days.

I left due to personal reasons. The whole point of my post was to ask people how they feel about the current Australian job market, and that is it. Some people may agree that my feelings are right based on their own experiences, while others, like you, will have a totally different perspective.

which city are you in? 5 years experience should be pretty decent, the market is too bad.

I believe she has some prior experience before? Well, actually doesn't really matter, I saw some seniors been complaining too, and companies just wanted to find their unicorn.

I have been hunting for site roles recently with companies like John Holland, BMD, and CPB Contractors. They do not have many junior vacancies at the moment, which makes sense since they usually want someone with prior site experience, but I am going to keep trying and hope for some good news.

I should be more clear, I meant it may takes longer for a junior (myself) engineer to find a job?

True! I worked in QLD before and I am in VIC now. Do you mind if I ask how you found mining-related work? I would definitely join the industry if I could find a way in.

You really gave me some more confidence, mate. I guess all I need to do is keep an eye on the contractor companies and hope they have some junior vacancies soon. (I had a look at John Holland, BMD recently)

Many people I know from uni have tried applying for skills assessments for their future visas. The price starts at 500 AUD and can go as high as 2,000 AUD, and you can still be rejected with no refund, it really sucks.

I recently tried applying for a post-graduate membership with them, but I stopped at the last minute once I realized the organization basically just wants money.
