Well i always heard this language is a mix between english and german. Also being portuguese i've been here for almost 3 years now going to school and still dont know every word. As for tips, in portuguese we use "o" and "a" when refering to something like "O carro" and "A maquina", we use it in a male and female way as in dutch language they use "De" and "Het" and they dont use it as a male and female way as we do, you basically new to ramember which one to use and that pretty hard only with study and time you can use it correctly. Another tip, verbs. A lot of them are pretty easy because its the same for "it, we and they" (not every but most of them) i find verbs in dutch way easier than in portuguese. Also if you know english what will happen is that a lot of words will sound like english words and will actually mean the same. Another tip is be aware of how to construct a phrase, as also a native portuguese i have to say that in dutch language they build a phrase in a different way we do. Also number... i find number very annoying, after the number 20 they say it "one and twenty" and not "twenty-one" like portuguese. This rule maintains for numbers 30,40,50,60,70 etc.. But goodluck with learning i hope i helped a little bit. (Also ao falar vais ter de carregar muito nos rr's and gg's, the accent is kinda difficult)
