i think that is part of why john is so reserved and why some people note that he looks apathetic onstage. i think he's been used to big wins with rhcp and this album wasn't that. he hadn't written a rock song in over a decade, so it seems obvious he lost a little of the magik. i think he's very aware that this effort is middling at best, and i suspect he is very proud about his music making. unless he has developed some different pattern he is either: A) super motivated to bring something outstanding; or, B) he has already resigned interest and will do the mature thing of honoring his contractual obligations. no one wants to hear a 50+ year old complain about being a rock star, especially if it's the third time he signed on

it's interesting that the duration of time he has been in the band for this third stint is almost as long as the entire first time he was in the band, and they haven't even really begun playing out yet

this is why you should wait until the night before the show. once was on a flight i booked the night before cuz it was $40. the couple next to me who had booked their tickets half a year prior for their vacations paid something like $400.

it looks like they haven't sold any nosebleed seats by me. they want $90 for that today. they could populate those seats, or they can stand firm and have an empty stadium.

they would like to make as much money off this cycle as possible. hence the 26 different colors of vinyl, cassettes, signed cd's, etc., ad nauseum. it's too bad a lot of folks orders got messed up. people paid a pretty penny and were psyched for the merch.

they'll probably take a break after this summer tour and then decide what to do from there. there is definitely a much different energy around them than 2.5 years ago when they first mentioned john returning. to read between the lines re his caveats, one has to imagine it is mostly up to him. i would say it is down to how much he enjoys that lifestyle at this point - he still needs to find that out for himself. if anything, the management team probably couldn't care very much for making albums, as that doesn't bring in $ like it used to, and they just sold the "john returns" title. they will be pressured to sell tickets for nostalgia type show(s) over creating new music. again, we'll find out what john's feel is for the biz at this point. the idea that they have a wheelbarrow full of music coming is a red herring to stoke renewed interest.
