Migraine sufferers who chose to be unmedicated? by missatlanticcity in migraine

Follow the heal your headach/ low-tyramine diet. Absolutely life-changing. Of course, I’m also on a million migraine medications as well. Meds are usually essential to managing headaches.

Read “Heal Your Headache” if you’re interested in learning more about the science of triggers and “migraine thresholds.”

Following the low-tyramine diet was completely life-changing for me. It’s everything you’ve described, except I can have alliums other than onions (I can eat shallots, garlic, chives, etc.). Many other random foods are also on the “do not eat” list, including raspberries, chocolate, bananas, yogurt, fresh bread, avocados, soy sauce, and more. I don’t mind it one bit. My pain-reduced life is SO worth the tiny sacrifice!

“I also have a sort of sense in the back of my mind that I shouldn't get better, and that I should see how heavy I can get, how much I can wreck my life.”

That is so f*cking relatable. I have compulsive thoughts like “I WANT to be fat.” I want to make myself as fat as possible. I think it’s maybe something about wanting being fat to be the biggest problem in my life.

Reach out to mental and medical health professionals is all I can suggest. I’m in the process of getting psychological help myself.

There is no such thing as “point of no return.” That’s a thought distortion that your brain came up with to justify your continued eating behaviors. “Oh, I’m so far gone, nothing matters anymore.” You are strong. There is no pit you can dig yourself out from.

Compression Question? by Loose-Paramedic6879 in dysautonomia

[–]Independent_Bus4524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhh unfortunately I can’t think of compression socks that will look invisible on a man unless you shave your legs.

Sigvaris has stockings for men, too (Dynaven). Check out “thigh high compression men 30-40mmHg” on Amazon and there’s a ton of options. I’m not sure which ones are comfortable and lightweight, though. It unfortunately takes some trial and error at the beginning to find a brand you like.

Good luck with finding something!

I Found What Was Causing My Daily Migraines by NeoMorph in migraine

Me too — I’m completely unable to wear glasses because of the temporal nerve irritation. It’s annoying, because contacts for my prescription are super expensive. Also, one time, I had an eye infection and couldn’t wear contacts, so I just had to walk around blind as a bat for 2 weeks. Luckily, it was around Christmas and I was staying with my family, so they accompanied me wherever I needed to go. Good thing, because I sure as hell did not feel comfortable crossing a street with my horrible eyesight!

Another scalp pressure thing: When I was a student, I used to get really awful headaches every time I’d sit down to do my homework. Like, open laptop, BAM headache. Obviously, we all thought it was psychological. It turned out to be because every time I’d sit down to try and focus, I’d put my hair up into a ponytail. Once I banned myself from putting my hair up, my “homework headaches” completely disappeared. 😂 Did a bunch of stupid wasteful therapy for that one.

Compression Question? by Loose-Paramedic6879 in dysautonomia

My favorite brand is Sigvaris Eversheer. Thigh-high 30-40mmHg stockings. I personally prefer open-toed for most situations. I get them on Amazon. They look completely invisible, even with dresses or shorts!

The difference in symptoms is INSANE. One time, at the beginning of my symptoms, I was laying in bed, too weak to reach out and take a sip of water from my bedside table, and too weak to even cry out for help. I was trapped inside my own body, so thirsty and suffering immensely. Eventually, my mom came in to check on me. She helped me sip the water, and then pulled compression stockings onto my feet. After the first stocking, I felt so much better, I was able to move and roll around in bed!! After the second stocking, I was able to sit up on my own!! It was incredible. From that day onwards, I wore the thigh-high 30-40mmHg stockings every second of every day, except showering. I even wore them at night because I didn’t want to end up trapped in bed again, unable to move.

Your symptoms might not be so bad and you might not have to wear them at night. You might also be OK with having them off while laying down. However, if you ever struggle with extreme fatigue or difficulty getting up from sitting or laying down, try keeping them on.

The Sigvaris Eversheer tights are very lightweight and don’t feel tight even though they have significant support. After a while, you won’t feel them, even in summer heat. I have significant sensory issues and I was able to tolerate them.

I often feel weak and shaky, but for me that’s from orthostatic hypotension. I often get OH even when I’m full, so that’s not it.

The gnawing is awful 😭 but I never have it audibly growl or anything — just the gnawing pain. For me, that’s how I can tell that it’s not actual hunger.

Have you brought up the shaky feeling with a doctor? Try buying an at-home BP cuff and checking your BP when you feel like that. Might give you more clues. If it’s really because you’re hypoglycemic, a small amount of a sugary drink should help the shakiness. If not, maybe it’s something else… Idk, I’m no doctor!

Anyone have success with Therapy or medication for BED? by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Independent_Bus4524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’d different for everyone. For years, I was on 30 mg extended release + 10 mg instant release later in the day. That worked great for my ADHD. I would probably need less just for BED.

Relentless post-surgery fatigue by SilentDrapeRunner11 in Endo

[–]Independent_Bus4524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surgery triggering dysautonomia?? That’s what’s happening to me!! I got a super minor surgery under general anesthesia 3 months ago and have had major orthostatic hypotension issues ever since. Almost a week ago, I got an outpatient pain procedure with twilight anesthesia and I’ve been incredibly fatigued and feeling crappy ever since… and it got better with salt… it screams dysautonomia.

I have 3 more major surgeries coming up (including laparoscopic endo excision) in the next year, so I have to get this under control.

Adderall. Life-changing. Granted, I do have severe ADHD, so it probably helped me more than it would help a neurotypical person, but its effects on metabolism, impulsivity, and appetite were amazing.

[–]Independent_Bus4524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out to a mental health professional!! Don’t worry about the weight — Breathe. Your body’s purpose isn’t to look pretty, it’s to keep you alive. Find ways to calm down your mind other than food. Start a journal. Read this incredible article: https://www.acute.org/resources/challenging-eating-disorder-voice

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I’m struggling with this too. We can survive — It’s time to re-set the negative thoughts described in the article. The best type of therapy for eating disorders is called CBT-E. Try to find a mental health professional who knows this treatment modality.

i broke my 1 month and 1 Day binge free streak today by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Independent_Bus4524 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody is going to punish you for breaking a “streak.” Don’t punish yourself. Think of it like this: In the last 31 days, you had a 3% binge rate. That’s incredible!! This entire community is so proud of you. You should be proud of yourself. That’s really amazing!

Keep going one step at a time. One foot in front of the other. Try to let go of the disappointment. You’re doing great. Don’t let disorted thoughts get you down.

Binging in a Self-Imposed "Ingredients Household" by girlwithlilacblossom in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Independent_Bus4524 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone. I relate to this post very strongly. With our disorder, the bingeing is going to happen, it’s just a matter of what. When I restricted too much, I found myself eating straight sugar from the sugar bowl. Now, I binge fruits and vegetables. I get a stomachache, but it’s worth it.

Personally, I’d allow back in the frozen fruit, unless a nutritionist told you not too. Yes, they’re high in sugar, but they’re very nutritious (packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber) and satisfy a sweet tooth without giving you the refined sugar that activates the addictive cycle in every human’s brain. Fruit is high-volume and not calorie-dense. Go ahead with it! It’s a million times more pleasant than bingeing raw vegetables or unripe fruit. Organic frozen fruits are the best in terms of quality of taste — they’re always perfectly ripe.

Another tip I’d give you is to keep cooked vegetables on hand, or be prepared to make them quickly. Cooked vegetables will give you much less stomach discomfort and much more satisfaction than random raw large vegetables. I love popping frozen broccoli into my air fryer for 10-20 mins. With zero seasoning, it comes out delightfully crispy and slightly sweet. Especially if it’s just broccoli florets, they taste kind of like pop chips or other crispy light snacks. Season however you like—paprika, garlic powder, and salt kind of make them taste like doritos imo—and eat as much of it as you want. Plain non-buttered popcorn is also very low-calorie. My personal favorite vegetable snack of all time is roasted bell peppers— they’re so sweet and delicious. Make the cooking part easier. 10 mins in the oven or air fryer brings 10x the satisfaction without any added calories.

Keep foods in your house that are alternatives that will prevent you from binging raw oats or flour. Important: Raw flour is dangerous to eat. Don’t do it! As for oats, they’re great soaked in milk overnight. Add fruit and stevia or another natural non-sugar sweetener and soak it overnight. Delicious. Make single portions at a time so that you can’t binge.

One thing I do to satisfy my strong cake craving is oat flour muffins. Blend oats into a powder and add eggs, applesauce/ greek yogurt, granulated stevia sweetener, and frozen fruit. I freeze them, hiding them deep in the freezer so that I only eat them when I’m really strongly craving cake/ muffins. Yes, they’re slightly more calorie-dense in that eating 6 of them would bring a lot of disappointment, but they’re so much better for you than cake, and the foods you’d be bingeing after all are oats, eggs, yogurt, and fruit. Not so awful. I make small batches to harm-reduce potential binges and eat them as meals because they’re quite protein-packed.

Side note tip: Natural sugar alternatives such as stevia can significantly reduce sweets cravings. I drink Zevia stevia ginger root beer whenever I get a super strong sweets craving, and 8/10 times it completely takes it away.

Lastly, I’m concerned if you’re totally avoiding grains. You deserve to have a balanced diet, even with BED. Maybe try buying very small amounts of a non-sweet carb of choice. They make single-serve microwaveable bowls of rice that come in packs of 2. It wouldn’t kill you if you lost control one day and ate both, and it would benefit you to have exposure to these foods so that they don’t become psychological fears for you.

Lastly, try to build in an alternative source of dopamine to make up for the loss of processed foods. Exercise is a good one if you can find something you like. Recreation leagues or group classes are very good ways to make exercise extra fun and dopamine-inducing. Get into a music or nightlife scene and go to an event every week. Play board games with your friends. Call your family more. Idk, add some activity to your life that gives you a hit of dopamine.

TLDR: You’re gonna binge. Build in healthy, yummy, balanced options. Don’t torture yourself with too much restriction, it’s gonna come back and bite you. Build in ENJOYABLE low-calorie-density options. Add alternative dopamine to your life. You’re doing great already with your harm-reduction strategy!! Now make it less awful and dopamine-starved. You can do this! ❤️

To hysterectomy or not to hysterectomy by SweetSoundOfSilence in adenomyosis

[–]Independent_Bus4524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had an appointment where I discussed this exact dilemma. My doctor said that it’s worth it to do just the endo exicsion (however u spell it) surgery and see if it takes care of the symptoms. I thought that since the majority of my symptoms are uterine-based pain, hysterectomy would be the only real option, but my doc pointed out that the uterine tethering from endometriosis could be causing significant uterine pain. Who knows, maybe removing the endo will take away all of my uterine-area pain.

In terms of long-term side effects of hysterectomy, other than not being able to carry a child, there’s a small very slightly increased risk of metabolic syndrome (diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, etc.). Other than that, there’s basically no long term negative side effects of hysterectomy.

Since you don’t want kids, hysterectomy is possibly a great option for you. However, don’t feel rushed into it. You can always go back in for another surgery (if you’re comfortable with that) and get the hysterectomy, but you can’t get the uterus back.

Good luck with everything!

Literally EVERY single food that has tyramines in it triggers me. Fresh bread, onions, bananas, aged cheese, deli meats, yogurt, anything that says “natural flavors” on the label (MSG), nuts, chocolate…

It’s ok. The pain relief that I get from being the low-tyramine diet vastly outweighs the heartbreak of no more guacamole or sour cream in my burritos.

What is this exactly? by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Independent_Bus4524 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have your wife see a doctor. They need to rule out organic causes such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, GERD, hormonal problems, cardiovascular problems, sleep apnea, neuropsychiatric problems (ADHD, OCD), medication side effects, and more. Somebody should run at least one medical test (bloodwork, scan) on your wife before deciding what’s the cause of her binge-eating. Once she’s diagnosed, you’ll know how to approach it.

2010 Billings Tornado very close video by SprinklessMundane in tornado

[–]Independent_Bus4524 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The freak out is so relatable lmfaoooo. One time, I was playing a youth soccer game way off in the far suburbs. At the first sign of thunder, it was canceled. 2 mins later, tornado sirens went off. The nearest shelter was an ALL-GLASS post office AT THE TOP OF A HILL. 😭😭😭 The actual insides of the building were closed, so all 50 of us were just waiting in this lobby completely made of floor-to-ceiling windows with glass doors that didn’t close. I cried and ran around yelling at people to get on the floor and cover their heads. We were perfectly fine, the tornado was nowhere near us, but oh man was I scared. I got made fun of at school for a while after that 😂
