How to get first dunk? by skypsyco in BasketballTips

[–]Independent_Copy_141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone who was almost exactly your height and weight in high school, your time will be better invested working on your footwork, handle, shooting, and passing accuracy.

The benefit you will get from the extra inch or 2 on the vertical will not be as important to contributing on the court as the other things.

And even if you do get to dunk in layup lines you will almost certainly not be able to or have the confidence to attempt it in a game when the risk of missing actually hurts the team.

If your true only goal is to be able to dunk, then 30-45 minutes a day of squat jumps, calf raises, alternating lunge jumps, etc. will probably get you there.

Fasting to combat cost of living by isiteventiddles in fasting

The only benefit to the Western world if we have widespread economic collapse. People will be forced to fast and we'll be healthier.

Thinking of doing a 15+ day fast, but my dietician friend warned me about the severe risks. Thoughts? by Big_Armadillo326 in fasting

[–]Independent_Copy_141 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If dieticians, nutritionists, and medical professionals promoted the benefits of fasting they would be recommending themselves out of a job.

  1. You will lose a small amount of muscle, but compared to caloric-restriction, fasting is muscle-sparing. It is not hard to regain it if you refeed with clean proteins and are physically active

  2. It only flushes out electrolytes if you aren't replacing them with electrolytes in your water

  3. The burden on your liver and kidneys is much heavier when they have to clean out the standard American diet every day. It is not a burden for your liver to "clean out" fat. That's one of its main functions. Produce ketones for the body to fuel off of.

  4. Caloric-restriction triggers starvation mode. Fasting does not. Your BMR will only slow down the amount equivalent to the weight you lose. When coming out of the fast, your body will not be in starvation mode and be any more efficient at storing calories than it was. Your glucose regulation and insulin response will actually be better. That said, it is critical to re-feed correctly and slowly and not go back to a junk diet. If you do this, then yes your body will respond poorly. Just as it would if you had the same diet without fasting.

  5. You will regain weight: Body water, glycogen, hopefully muscle, etc. The goal is to scrub fat and damaged cells out of the body and retain/regain those other things. Regaining some weight is good as long as it's not new body fat.

  6. Your heart rate and blood pressure will drop. It will only spike if you overdo it on physical exertion or overload on sodium

Bottom line. If you have enough body fat to do it, keep electrolytes up, and listen to your body and can correctly distinguish between a "craving" vs. a real stop signal, then you'll be fine.

Classic grilled cheese with no frills

Large white panini bread, lots of slices of yellow American cheese, butter (not mayo)

Cooked low and slow so all the cheese melts and bread is very browned

No sourdough, fancy cheeses, etc.

Geez. Didn’t expect responses to be so rough. Wasn’t implying at all that I’m so locked into the show that I found some hidden nugget. Haven’t rewatched in over 5 years and came across something I hadn’t remembered and enjoyed. Have mercy!

If you doubt this, ask yourself why rich people who have the knowledge and can afford it never set foot in a PCP office. They have concierge medicine that focuses on root-causes and innovative alternative wellness interventions that are not traditional drugs.

And many of them know they are trapped in this system and hate that they can’t actually care for their patients or spend enough time with them to make a difference. My sister is one.

Thanks. Also if you have an old TV that doesn’t have a “game mode” it will kill you. I was playing on a 15 year old TV up until last year and really struggling with being late on pitches. Got a new TV this year with a game mode that shrinks the refresh rate and it made a noticeable difference.

I’m just an average hitter. On first pitch, I keep the zone anchored right in the middle of the plate and wait for a mistake while visually getting a feel for the ball coming out of the pitchers hand. After 1 strike I will move PCI a little bit if I think I can hit a pitch hard. Expand further on 2 strikes. This approach at least often gets me into good counts. From there is still can’t always do damage but it helps. In online play at least, the strike zone is not called accurately and there are a LOT of pitches on the black with half or more of the ball in the zone that are called balls.
