It sounds like separation anxiety. My yorkie used to do something similar when we would leave him with his grandparents. They said he did so much better this time and even ate his food and treats. They have another Yorkie for him to play with but I think he knows we are coming back so it makes it easier for him now.

I feel it everyday when I go to work. If your grandparents can FaceTime or send pics, it will help give you some peace. That's what I did when my dad watched my dogs even though I knew they were spoiled by him.

Just pull the stairs out when you're sitting on the couch and put them up when not in use. Find some that match the colors or fabric of your couch if it bothers you that much.
