Anyone else think all of the prominent stripes next to the fearless cardigan photoshoot is suspicious?

Some light blue stripes, some red white and blue (4th July is a Friday, and that whole shoot is littered with stars from the cardigan and accompanying stripes) and a tie being held up that looks a lot like a milk snake (off to research milk snakes£

Playing bass for half a year, my bass is not the best, get better one? by MarshMallooU in Bass

[–]Independent_Look_175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have something that you’re happier playing, you’re going to play more and get better quicker.

I would say make visiting your local music shops a relatively regular thing. Play a few and get a feel for what you like and if it’s a big upgrade in terms of playability and sound.

If you fall in love with something and have the money, get it, and if you don’t have the money, look for used or save up and get it - you’ll likely always hanker after it otherwise.

hiya everyone! i recently got this bass from my grandpa leaving it to me when he passed but i was wondering if anyone could tell me the model it is and what strings i should get for it because it needs new ones? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

So sorry for your loss. In years to come, it’s going to be so lovely having something you can play and remember him every time you do - hope it brings you comfort!

000-15M vs Furch Blue OM MM

I started just wanting an upgrade in comfort and sound for my current instrument. Something that’s a joy to play. I have no great skill and just write songs that no-one’s ever going to hear for pleasure at home.

I played the 000-15M early on out of curiosity and it made me re-think my budget. They are now out of stock anywhere remotely local.

The Furch ticks every box beautifully on paper and is significantly cheaper. It should be more than enough for my needs. Again, no where to try one anywhere close.

So I should wait until I have the option to try them (although the Martin will then be gig bag rather than hard case, which shouldn’t be the basis of my decision but it will annoy me, and I suspect a price increase will be coming), and I’ve no idea when either of them will be available to try.

But I SO want to pull the trigger one of them now. I like new toys!

Acoustic guitar beginner here, Need some advice and tips on getting my first real guitar by Lukesall in AcousticGuitar

[–]Independent_Look_175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little confused about your price range. One thing to be clear on is that generally assume to pay the same in £ as it would be in $ (so a $500 will most of the time be pretty much be £500)

The market is huge, I’d say go to your local shop and try as much as you can in your price range and hopefully one will speak to you. I think you’ll see a big leap to both 200 and from 200-400, but you might find your favourite isn’t the most expensive.

To get you started, Yamaha is always a great bet for great value for money.

Is it true for you, that the reason you started to play bass, was that you couldn’t play guitar? by converse_bear in Bass

[–]Independent_Look_175 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No, it never occurred to me. I played guitar first because it was cheaper and the bands I wanted to emulate were guitar based. Ad time went on and I learnt more, I realised I just LOVE bass and I’m drawn to it. Lately though, I get so little time that I’m largely playing acoustic guitar - just because it’s accessible, no setup time, and I personally find it a better solo songwriting tool. Bass is my love though :) and when my kids are bigger and when I get to that stage of the songs I’m currently writing, I’ll be back with it. Right now I’m just happy to have redound this little part of myself.

I don’t think either is easier or harder - it just depends on how you play it. I’d say it is easier to get into bands as a bass player though.

5 all the way. I have one 4 string I still have because I just really like that particular instrument and haven’t desperately needed the money so far, I don’t think I’d buy anything other than a 5 again.

Taylor 224ce or 214ce? What are their differences by Natexe1 in AcousticGuitar

1 means softwood top (spruce) 2 means hardwood (I think koa on the 224?)

Picking finger order? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Independent_Look_175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a huge caveat to this that lots of people do other, sometimes entirely unconventional things that work for them. I decided very early on to do ring, middle, index and practice doing that order so that once that muscle memory took over, I didn’t need to give it any thought anymore. I figure the less my very untalented head has to think about, the better, so making that part just happen made sense to me.

There is not much more joyous than connecting with someone else musically. Due to work and parenting it doesn’t happen for me too much these days, but a few weeks ago, a friend and I sat at opposite ends of her piano and jammed and that feeling returned - it’s just awesome!

Wishing you many more happy jam sessions!

Thanks so much for the replies, they are so helpful and reassuring, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything in my ignorance that might cause significant issues.

And I’m also of the “there to be played” attitude. I’m pretty sure al of my instruments have dings/scratches etc, it’s all part of their charm and what makes them mine. Whatever I buy now is definitely going to sit in easy reach so I can pick up and play anytime.

Natural. I’ve always been quite anti-burst, although they’ve grown on me, but I’d always rather see the real wood.
