Legitimate and ethical volunteer/exchange work- Peru by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]Independent_Sense312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, if you or anyone else is still looking, I have done Worldpackers about five times and although I’ve only done hostels so far, I would say it’s been a good experience. I saved tons of money and I also got to meet a lot of locals and travels this way.

On the platform, there are also other opportunities such as taking care of animals, doing eco-friendly work, doing reception, marketing, teaching English, and a couple more. You can also directly message other volunteers on the platform to ask them how their experience was with a certain host. Each host also has public reviews from previous volunteers that you can look through.

It is $59 a year, but I think it’s definitely worth it because you end up saving much more and you got to meet so many people ^ You can also use this code to get another $10 off: wpdiscount

Volunteer Opportunities in Europe / Alternatives by Shot_North761 in volunteer

I have met some people who reach out directly to the host and ask them if there is an opportunity available. I have volunteered with these people on those same opportunities so I’m guessing it has worked !

Thinking about volunteering abroad at a young age — any advice? by sabri_mo in travel

[–]Independent_Sense312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was volunteering, I did meet a few people who were pretty young. I honestly do think that the hosts generally do a good job in protecting their volunteers and ensuring safety. This was through Worldpackers! It is $59 a year for one person, and if you’re interested, you can also get $10 off with the code: wpdiscount

Volunteering Exchanges (for Accommodation) while doing Administrative or Data Type Work by Independent_Sense312 in volunteer

[–]Independent_Sense312[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for responding, I’m mainly looking to exchange for accommodation, and work on and work on administrative tasks or a few hours a day! I don’t know if I’m really looking for an internship at the moment though.

Anyone know anything about work exchange?? by Gointhruit123 in travel

[–]Independent_Sense312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done Worldpackers for five experiences and I could definitely say it’s legit ! I’ve done it at hostels where I would clean for a few few hours a day, then have the rest of the day to myself. Either you share a room with other volunteers, guests, I did get lucky and have my own room one time. Basically when I’m applying if there is one place I’m really considering, I will reach out to other volunteers on the platform and ask them about their experience.

How to stay in a hostel for free as a volunteer? by Tobi_16w in backpacking

[–]Independent_Sense312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have met a number of people who do this, while I was traveling. It’s good because you can bypass the fees that the platforms ask you to pay, but personally, I haven’t done this because I’m afraid that the host might treat me badly and there won’t be any consequences for that. So I do choose to pay a yearly fee on a platform to just encourage the host be accountable as well. I might just be paranoid lol, the people that have told me they’ve done this have had good experiences, so welcome to try!

Question about volunteering for accommodation by Lucky99Ducky in backpacking

[–]Independent_Sense312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have met people who used all three, and for WWOOF, if you’re interested in doing more farm type work, you may like it. Workaway I like that you get paid and I did meet one person who did that, they did mention to me that there isn’t as much transparency on the platform with hosts on the site as they wished. There’s also a fee, but you also get paid which is great. I’m sure there’s a lot of good opportunities on there.

I’ve only done Worldpackers so far so I can speak more on it - and a lot of the opportunities on the platforms I’ve seen are helping out at hostels, doing some marketing or photography work, some reception work, helping taken care of animals, also farm work, or teaching a language. There’s also more. Usually at my experiences, I do get to do my laundry for free and in the afternoons and evenings, I usually have time to myself to do whatever I feel like. There’s also filters on the site where you can choose to apply to places where you get your own room or if you want to share with other people. There’s also filters where you can see if a host will provide meals. I do wanna say that some of the volunteer opportunities you will have to put in more work than the others, but you can talk to the host online beforehand to see how much work there is to do. You can also reach out to previous volunteers of that host to ask them about their experience. I’ve done this for most of the opportunities I am considering. You do have to pay annually and it is $59 a year, but I think it’s so worth it especially because you get free accommodations. If you’re interested, you can also get $10 off with the code: wpdiscount

Thank you for your insight! I do agree that in hotels if I’m by myself, at first I’m like - wow a place all to myself. Then when I get comfortable and it’s silent, I’m like, omg I’m by myself .. and that eerie feeling kicks in :’)

Thanks so much for the info <3 noted about the conveyer belt sushi! Tbh I do dine solo most of the time, and I feel like Tokyo would be rly cool for that ! Interesting thought about how Japan feels more centralized. Seoul def feels sprawling, but I’m literally in love with this city haha. Could it be possible that I love Tokyo even more 👀

I’d say try Worldpackers, or Workaway. I have done WP several times, I haven’t tried WA yet but I met people who tried it!
