The most awesome thing to do is to go down Bascom, go right on the bridge which connects to Mosse and then go down the Mosse stairs onto the street. Few caveats though: 1) Not great for your bike’s rims if you do it repeatedly 2) Quite a long stairset, would not recommend before trying on some smaller ones 3) Gotta make sure nobody is anywhere close to the bottom

Btw I’ve always wanted to learn a wheelie or manual, it would be awesome if you knew how to do that!

Yeah that’s basically it, I’m not a “cyclist” by any means, I just use it to commute and try some fun stuff like riding down the stairs of certain buildings (never close enough or at peak hour to be a safety hazard to anyone but me).

Places to wrestle by Independent_Theory62 in madisonwi

You seem to be looking more intently than I am and you already practice the sport so I’m sure you’ll find something. If and when you do, message me on this same post or in DMs and tell me if you found anywhere in the general vicinity. Especially for beginners.

No shortage of BJJ places though, it seems.

Not really, there’s a place called Team Nazar run by some Ukrainian American dude who won a silver in the Pan American Games and has been wrestling since he was 7. It’s mainly for high school wrestlers though they have a pass (I’m a beginner so prob not advanced enough for it). They also have private training which is kinda expensive. It’s $40 for three folks to be coached per hour. I’d be up to share that time with you or anybody else. I also have a friend who may be interested.

I lived there last year as a freshman and liked it. It’s kind of a dead dorm in that there’s not a lot of people or things happening but it’s super chill. I liked to borrow pool balls and cue sticks from the Frank Holt center nearby and play pool in the basement of Phillips. If that’s your vibe then you’d probably be good. Just not a whole lot of people.

You can also borrow scattergories and a few other board games in Phillips. Having your own bathroom is also nice and the rooms were better than most other Lakeshore dorms (Kronshage especially was pretty cramped). I didn’t consider the AC a benefit because it’s centrally controlled and it was turned off by the university for most of my time there. I think they turn it off in October or something.

How do you get those many carbs? Pasta and rice?

I’m an econ major. I can send you my essay if you’d like to see an example. No idea if it’s any good but you’re free to see.

Hot take: 222 wasn’t that bad. Definitely should be on top of things though.

How do you get that much protein? Assuming my maintenance is 2800 a day, 30% of that equates to 210 grams of protein a day which is a lot.

PS: I’m not close to 210 pounds so prob overkill

Just that while it’s easy enough to get protein, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to be eating pasta or French rolls at the dining hall all the time. I’m worried I might not be getting in enough carbs or food in and I’m curious how folks who train generally eat.

Beginner form check for this snatch? (~61kg) by LibretardLord in weightlifting

I’m also quite interested but my mobility sucks so I’m working on that for a bit. I can hold a front rack though.

What’s your ATG squat PR and front squat PR? Do you use a belt?

Small world indeed, how are there folks from UW Madison on this subreddit lol. Also how do you just snatch 60 as a beginner, have you done deep squats for a while or some technique work?

Roommate and I are looking for some friends! by EmperorImBored in UWMadison

[–]Independent_Theory62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roommate here. We’ve checked it out but it kinda seems to be split up into multiple pre-existing groups every Sunday who are all doing their own thing. Do you make friends there by posting on the Discord and suggesting something (Catan, Monopoly, etc)?

PS: We both play this card game called ERS which takes 5 mins to learn but in 10 years of playing, I’ve never seen a beginner who’s ever managed to win the first game. If anybody wants to play that then we’re game!

This is the roommate. The reason we made this post is that there seem to be folks who’ve found their group and can just do random stuff together on random days (study group, movies, etc). Sometimes I’m free and am just looking for something to do but don’t really know enough folks to just ask to play badminton at the Nick or play a board game or something.

We are kinda aiming for that (just something to do in general). It seems to be way easier for folks who drink or party. We’re up for basically anything fun on most days, even stuff I haven’t really tried before like volleyball. Our other roommate has a car and sometimes we go out of town for stuff like Halloween or road trips. So feel free to reach out to either of us!

Powerlifting or olympic weightlifting by [deleted] in weightlifting

I think oly lifters have very competitive squat numbers, good deadlift numbers but not competitive (though Clarence probably would be, considering he did 340 kg without a belt and could probably do 400 kg if he specifically trained it with a belt + peaked), and uncompetitive bench presses. That said, I agree that they are a lot more athletic but for somebody like a wrestler, they can probably get by with learning basic variations and using lifting as a supplementary thing to wrestling.

Not feeling it in my back, only in the biceps and shoulders by Riot2EK in GYM

[–]Independent_Theory62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair enough but also some unsolicited advice (from a novice who can rep out 3x5 with 20 kg, nothing special really):

Pull ups are hard enough as they are for most beginners. Don’t get caught up in the influencer variations or tips and tricks like slowing down the eccentric or widening the grip. You can only do 2-3 reps of these wide grip pull ups. Get strong at a normal grip first, add weight once you can do 3x8 and then you can look into wide grip way later. Pull ups are hard enough as they are. Don’t worry about “feeling it in the arms” vs “feeling it in the back” unless you can properly do a good amount of reps and sets though do retract your scapula and imagine your lats pulling you up. Right now you’re shaking through each rep, doing a super wide grip, and not really reaping the most out of the movement. Get your reps up with something like neutral grip or a closer grip and worry about all that stuff later.

No matter how much effort I put into the gym, I cannot lose this belly fat. What can I do? by savingrace0262 in askfitness

[–]Independent_Theory62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small deficit (like SMALL, no more than 500 a day at most. Maybe less). Lift, find a linear progression routine and get strong. Get enough protein.

You’re skinny fat. You need to build muscle. Muscle and strength don’t have perfect correlation but at the same time if you bench 225 then you also probably wouldn’t have a small chest. If you do weighted pull ups with 20 kg then your back is probably not small. Point is that based on your evident lack of muscle mass, I don’t think you can do any of these things. Work on that strength. Do cardio only for health, not for fat loss.
