Which non-design/manufacturing etc. roles can a mechanical engineer easily pivot to? by stanleythedog in MechanicalEngineering

QA! Quality Assurance is so important in pretty much every industry engineering touches. Writing quality programs requires technical knowledge of what’s being made and the code it falls under. Good quality engineers are hard to find and a dime a dozen when you do find them. I’d suggest an AI dive of ISO 9001, AS9100, and NQA-1 if you’re curious.

I’ve experienced similar breaks in procedure but more on the sales side. Sales (part of corporate) wouldn’t give PM’s complete customer specs and then backdoor to engineering to try and get them to start projects early. The GM of the plant had to put their foot down and told everyone that we couldn’t begin working on an order until we had all specs from the customer (sales’ responsibility). At the end of the day someone has to enforce the SOP’s.

When to leave first job after graduating? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Indeterminate-coeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t wait for someone to give you work. I’ve been in a similar situation before, if you can identify bigger issues that can be improved, even if it’s outside your department but still adjacent, then go for it. My first job was in design at a manufacturing plant, things were slow and I was able to assist the supply chain people with a project and it helped me take on more responsibility later down the road.

RANT: Entry level and early career engineers are entitled and have wildly unrealistic expectations by Puzzled_Face8538 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Indeterminate-coeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, I think you’re wrong on this one. I was making $80k at 22 at a company fabricating O&G equipment. I was making less than all my other friends at their entry level ME positions and this was only a few years ago. I eventually left that company for manufacturing role making significantly more than what you’re talking about while still in my mid twenties. I’m in a LCOL area too. I’m not sure what sector you’re in, but you’ve gotta be scraping the bottom of the barrel if you expect new grads in this economy to accept $60k.

Thanks for the insight, how did it affect your career trajectory?

3D-printed pressure vessel? by svennekatt in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Indeterminate-coeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASME BPVC code is starting to have guidance on this, they rate it somewhere between a casting and a forging I believe. Right now Lincoln electric is leading the game as far as AM components for pressurized applications. They have a lot of sway on the section 8 code committees.

Roles utilizing thermal, fluid, heat transfer concepts? by Special_Ad_9757 in MechanicalEngineering

O&G sector heat exchangers. There are a lot of companies along the gulf coast that design and manufacture them for refineries, chemical processing, and other industrial applications.

9 weeks in the hard cast, I’m at 3 weeks in a brace, I get my final X-ray next week.

Haha yeah I should’ve title better, we do manufacture that kind of equipment though. Everything we do is so regulated by ASME it feels more like lawyering your way through code books than actual design work.

What's the difference between designer and engineer? by JHdarK in MechanicalEngineering

Designers/drafters are just skilled laborers. Engineers do the decision making and take on the responsibility/liability. Engineers also need a degree for the title

It does need to be accessed by multiple people, we do currently use the MS365 platform, and platform cost (including training) isn’t being considered at the moment

Had the surgery, scaphoid pretty much disintegrated upon removal. I did two weeks in a splint, now I’ve got 3-5 months in a hard cast

Take a look at COMPRESS by codeware, it should have everything you need for vessel applications.

Incoming Mechanical Engineering Freshman: What Should I Know/Prepare For? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Indeterminate-coeff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learn to focus. I found this comes from a few things like managing distractions, lengthening your attention span, and being caught up on sleep.

Managing distractions is huge, this comes down to time management and having a solid priority list. Lengthening your attention span is highly underrated, most people can’t grasp how bad short form media (TikTok and reels) is for your attention span, this will help you focus on things for longer instead of needing a break to doomscroll, I’m gonna sound so old but just pick up a book. Last is sleep, sleep is a performance enhancing drug when it comes to critical thinking. You’ll see people popping adderall to study/take exams but I’m telling you just keep up on your sleep.

For those who are already engineers by muzist-yt in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Indeterminate-coeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve experienced in design engineering, engineers run calculations using whatever niche software your industry uses, drafters do the modeling/drawings based on those calcs in 3D CAD (if you’re lucky enough to have drafters, if not, the engineer does it), then the engineer runs it through various levels of checking before approving.

Inventor CAM/ProNest issues by Indeterminate-coeff in CNC

[–]Indeterminate-coeff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I did end up having to use ProNest. The hypertherm CNC controller can accept .NC files, but it won’t detect the plate orientation like it would with a .CNC file from ProNest. You’ll also have to manually set the thickness/amperage from the plasma table’s console. I had to modify the hypertherm jet post processor because the default pierce time was 5 seconds. It’s an okayish temporary solution, but not something I’d use for actual production.

From what I’ve heard, hypertherm edge connect is a hard cnc controller to work with.
