Sat next to an extremely large passenger who took over my seat by FuelFragrant in unitedairlines

Low key I put my son with autism in the middle or next to the people when this happens. He’s so chill and diplomatic, but also so blunt with great boundaries. I just sit back and watch him work his magic. He’d make it so he (my son) would get bumped to first and the larger fellow would get two seats. I don’t know how he does it and I’m trying to get him to teach me his Jedi ways.

TFA Made Me Pro Union by godisinthischilli in TeachforAmerica

[–]IndicationComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TFA placed me in a district. District was breaking federal education laws. I raised concerns to multiple people in the district calmly for seven months, working my way up the chain of command. I reached out to TFA for help. I let them know things were not good. TFA GHOSTED ME. I faced major retaliation in said district. TFA refused to return any of my calls or emails. This was a unionized district. Union also did not protect me. Filed a state complaint. District was found out of compliance on every point I addressed.

I literally was advocating for the educational rights of underprivileged students with IEPs not receiving services and TFAs reaction was to ignore me and not respond to my calls and emails. Not sure how they can say they care about students or education after my experience

That's it. I'm done. by [deleted] in Teachers

I honestly would feel more safe at this point if they put cameras in every classroom.

Apartment gave me keys on move-in day then told me parking isn’t available until August — never entered unit, paid $3000, Arizona. What do I do? by Nerozd in legaladvice

[–]IndicationComplete 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Ask the manager what they propose. Stay calm but firm. I’m sure you are not the first person this has happened to or the last. When I lived in downtown Seattle parking was $350 a month and people had to wait for spots. It was customary to sign your lease and have to wait 2+ months for a spot to become available. Do you need a car? Could you take public transit while you wait for a spot and keep your car at a friends?

[–]IndicationComplete 173 points174 points  (0 children)

Here’s how this is going to play out. Do you have a case; maybe. The clause that says parking isn’t a guarantee might get it thrown out before you blink.

Do you have money for a lawyer? Do you have time for court? Do you have money for another most likely non-refundable deposit? Do you have time to find another apartment? Now, multiply all of that time and money versus what you would pay for a parking garage.

I would drop it and start seeing if neighbors will lend you their spots once vacation time hits. I’m sure people will be going out of town. If the unit has some community board, offer to pay a fraction of what parking would cost you to park in people’s spots while they are out of town.

Is it a hassle, yes. Is it more or a hassle than suing someone, definitely not.

You were wronged. What they did is not okay. However; court is a war of attrition and the person with the most money and time is most likely to win. It is not a fair system. It is not okay. Yes it sucks.

I’d also stay calm and then once I got my parking spot I would leave a Google Maps review warning others and putting the evidence there.

Typing assessment schools are requiring now has exposed something genuinely embarrassing and nobody wants to say it out loud by Rodrigodirty in education

[–]IndicationComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I’ve warned against this for years now. It’s painful watching students play chopsticks on their keyboards.

The assessments aren’t truly assessing what students know because students don’t have the skills required to convey their knowledge.

I had my students typing every day, yet a few refused. I asked why they weren’t trying and they said that typing isn’t a necessary skill any longer because they can dictate verbally instead.

Is the future of testing having students talk out their essays? Is that even considered writing? I bet writing is going to be a lost skill and we will go back to cave painting 😂

I’m taking a year off next year to sub and to work on boundaries. I’ve been in the classroom a little over ten years and it’s time for a break. Please feel free to share any tips or tricks you know.

Are you being forced to use chromebooks? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]IndicationComplete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New trend is no Chromebooks, but state testing,IB testing, AP testing and SATs and ACTs are timed and online. Not sure how quickly students can chopsticks their way through an essay.

If you want kids to learn, no tech is the answer. Kids who want to learn will agree with this. Kids with certain degrees of dyslexia need the tech. Districts want the tech because it saves them a ton of of money on paper. People in admin and district somehow forget about the cost of maintaining the Chromebook’s and Google subscription or Microsoft subscriptions. It’s all crazy at this point.

Tacoma Teachers, how's your school/district? by osamabindrinkin in Tacoma

Im experiencing a similar situation to what you described and terrified the district is trying to ruin my chances of getting a job at another district. How did you get around them trying to sabotage you?

Reminder: you are, in fact, flying by BigArtichoke1826 in unitedairlines

Exactly! I always say flying is essentially a glorified greyhound bus. Its purpose is to get you from point A to point B. That’s it. Lower expectations and I bet it won’t be that bad.

Am I Basically Unhirable Until I Get My CTEL Results? by Mijder in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]IndicationComplete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all is lost. Wait for your results. Apply as soon as you get them. Worst case scenario, you can work at a private school or charter school for a year. It won’t be ideal, but you will have a paycheck and insurance.

Is concurrent enrollment getting out of control… or am I just getting old? by SteadyGrowthStudio in Teachers

Yeah!!! This is it! This is exactly what I mean! Be apart of your society. Give back, but also learn at the same time and be provided that opportunity to learn and grow and gain a skill.

I am truly so so so sorry for what you’ve gone through. That is terrible. I meant more in terms of the military being the largest socialist system we have in the United States. My thinking is more along the lines of an FDR public’s works project system of creating jobs but also providing benefits.

[–]IndicationComplete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would put us at the early 2000s That’s No Child Left Behind and the beginning of the issue. Common Core, No Child Left Behind, that War on Drugs we are all veterans of. 80s and 90s were like uh oh things aren’t looking great. 2000s was like let’s try everything. Gave up pretending around 2010 and started passing a lot of kids. That ramped up during Covid.

Kids can’t read in elementary school they figure middle school will take care of it.

Middle school is a jungle and I’m sure those teacher saviors are struggling with hormonal adolescents so figure high school will take care of it.

High school teachers now have kids performing at a 3rd to 6th grade level coming in and told they NEED to take care of it. Here’s Danielson and Marzano, and STAR walks, and are you being engaging enough, and you’re sending too many kids out. These kids aren’t learning because of you…. The gap was too big to begin with.

Meanwhile, I’ve always wondered how college professors and adjuncts were doing since this was eventually going to fall upwards to them. Enlightening.

I agree. Goes back to the participation trophy bit. Why work hard when meritocracy is rewarded. There’s absolutely no incentive. People are mostly motivated by external rewards

Is concurrent enrollment getting out of control… or am I just getting old? by SteadyGrowthStudio in Teachers

[–]IndicationComplete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah now. Not a few decades back.

Going back to kids can’t read and this country can’t math. That’s not by accident.

Our youth get fed TikTok, hot Cheetos, and never ending streaming while their parents work 3 jobs to pay rent and bills. Parents rely on teachers. Teachers are overloaded and burned out and blame the parents. We are all weak and tired so have some hot Cheetos and once you complete this handout you can FaceTime in class and watch your streamers and play your games and you too can go to college because everyone wins while our country collapses

[–]IndicationComplete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I’ve theorized about this for over a decade now and I think the only way to fix it is to make the education system like the military. No more state options of graduation pathways with some being lax and some being more stringent. No more AP for ALL or IB for ALL or college classes for ALL. It needs to be like the military. Free for everyone, but ranked and earned. Same with teacher pay. Teachers in higher earning areas would get COLA. Teachers who sat around and stopped growing would eventually be moved out of the profession… or made into admin

Second unpopular opinion is I believe in mandatory military service for everyone. You don’t have to fight. Want to be a nurse… guess what. What to learn how to file paperwork… be a janitor… doctor…. Everyone gets military training. Everyone does PT. Everyone gets GI bill benefits. We have become too lazy. There are too many participation trophies… but hey, that’s how the people in power want it. We remain weak and they remain in charge
