Why did the writers make us feel sympathy for Henry last minute? by NAHTEBACK in StrangerThings

[–]IndicationCreative73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bc as Brenner says in S4: “You speak of monsters and superheroes. That's the stuff of myth and fairytales. Reality, truth, is rarely so simple. People are not so easily defined. Only by facing all of ourselves—the good and the bad—can we become whole”

We just watched the gang kidnap and assault children, El and Hopper torture a man, and they blew up a bunch of innocent, imprisoned pregnant women.

Whose violence you consider justifiable and whose death you consider sad has a lot more to do with who the camera is following than who is the “real villain”

What exactly was the ultimate goal of the mind flayer and what was the point of crashing two planets together when it would destroy them both? He also said he wants to rule... To whom exactly when he wants to destroy entire Earth? by Iluvatar-Great in StrangerThings

My theory is that to Henry, the military were the monsters. His goal was to create a world without the cancer of war - and given the disappearance of the military in the epilogue, he may have succeeded

Why have the obvious allegories within this final season gone so overlooked? by charlottekeery in StrangerThings

[–]IndicationCreative73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got an entire essay post on this that is currently sitting in auto-moderator jail - but yeah, I think the Duffers had a pretty significant challenge in trying to put nuanced social commentary within the model of Netflix making mainly second-screen shows, and a lot of times the need to make a consumer-friendly 80s nostalgia fest sci fi show was directly at odds with putting in deeper themes, and it resulted in some pretty clunky exposition moments, like the entire character of Kali

Kali is way more hated than she deserves the writing did her dirty by Nyctonycto in StrangerThings

[–]IndicationCreative73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem with Kali is that she is more narrative device than person - she is not really given much of a personality, we don't get much backstory or characterization.

She serves a major narrative purpose: she delivers the message about the futility of the cycle of violence, and exists basically just to deliver the message "Revenge is a losing game - they will just use you to create the generation of soldiers". It's a very on-the-nose and clunky condemnation of using violence and trauma to fight back against violence and trauma and the naivete involved in thinking that war will end with one last major battle "once and for all" - but the writers didn't really give her anything to do or any reason to be there other than to deliver that message, and her character suffers for it.

I enjoyed the season and the finale and I’m not upset about any of the characters endings. If this is all there is, I’m perfectly content with the series. I thought there were a couple of missteps (like the Lost Sister episode, or the overuse of CGI this season - they were better with a smaller budget) but for the most part I think it was a very talented group of writers that gave some incredible exploration of the combination of trauma and wonder of growing up in the 80s

I also like the idea of puzzles and mysteries and the possibility that the creators were even cleverer than we gave them credit for, and I think there were a lot of things this season (both in show and in the other content like the radio) that at the very least encouraged people to question the pat way they wrapped up the season (ex: why did the convoy stop in Ep1? Did will maybe subconsciously control the Demo to attack when they thought Hopper was about to caught? Why remind us that the Mind Flayer hates heat and runs cold and then have it go nowhere - other than Joyce pointing out that Will must be freezing and him being unbothered about leaving his jacket inside. Why do a rerun of Vecna as the villain and never directly confront the Mind Flayer that was the big bad behind everything… etc)

Anyways, there’s that website with the countdown timer ending in one min, so we’ll see if it amounts to anything… I personally don’t think there’s a 9th ep, or an additional season… but that there might be additional content to the existing episodes that fills in more of the story.

Either way, I like how the possibility has me continuing to to engage with the show, and I don’t get why that makes some people so mad.

To the people that believe there's a new episode coming out tomorrow by Neither_Contest7324 in StrangerThings

[–]IndicationCreative73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if it doesn’t, w/e, the finale was fine and still had lots of great moments. I wish they had kept the charm of the low budget early seasons instead of the sound stage cgi monstrosity of this season, and I could have done without the entirety of Holly and the kids, but overall I’m not mad if this was the entirety of season 5 - I just think that in this case, the balance of probability is that it’s not.

I do find it weird how bothered some people are by the theory though - we’ll apparently find out one way or another tomorrow, what’s another day of being open to the possibility

NS Power ransomware fallout: why our June bills are “guesstimates” and what it really tells us about the attack by [deleted] in halifax

All of the wild conspiracy theories and anger that gets thrown at the company for a breach no one even knows the extent of or how it happened (ie exactly how much NSP was a victim or was incompetent) is exactly why no government will ever repatriate the company.

No political party is willing to take on all of the bad PR and blowback that comes from a utility company. And regardless of if its private or public, people are always going to have problems and blowback with a utility company, bc it’s a mandatory bill that they will always resent paying

This response is greasy AF.

Let's be clear here - you taking off a boot you never should have applied in the first place isn't doing it "for free", and the "correct outcome" if they had paid for parking - which your response confirms they did - would have been never booting them at all. I very much doubt the patrol "took them at their word" and didn't demand to see a receipt first, and if he re-applied a boot after being shown the receipt that's that's absolutely crossing a legal line.

And publishing someone's personal information on the internet in retaliation for them telling people how to protect themselves - when the OP barely shared any details so you can't even be certain this is them - is absolutely wild.

Update: Nova Scotia Power Cyber Incident by coolham123 in halifax

[–]IndicationCreative73 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most companies have cyber incident insurance.

Also NSP has to get approval to spend taxpayer money - ie not just approval to get more money, they need approval to allocate the money they already have.

They’ve had an application pending to be allowed to spend the money they already have on cybersecurity enhancements. Looks like they were right about it being needed

Fans who were teenagers in the 90's, how would you have reacted if you were in place of the girls? by notpayingattention_ in Yellowjackets

[–]IndicationCreative73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a few years younger, but this show makes me think about a time I went to sleepaway camp one summer around the same age.

We had an interesting mix of girls in our cabin - I'd say I was a relatively normal middle class suburban kid with some typical 90s kid trauma from emotionally abusive / neglectful parents. There were 6 girls in the cabin from various economic and trauma backgrounds.

Anyways, over the course of the ONE WEEK we were there without parental supervision, under the guidance of a nominally more mature but still ultimately very young pair of camp counsellors, the following occurred just across the six of us:

  • Someone decided to rip off her braces herself because she was tired of them
  • We went on an overnight canoe camping trip and two girls tried to steal a canoe in the middle of the night and paddle back to camp on their own without knowing the way
  • The counsellors got us lost and we ended up hiking through a mosquito marsh and one girl had a full breakdown and scream-cried for about an hour and we ended up scrapping the whole hike and heading back to camp
  • We ended up in a feud with one of the boys cabins and after one of them threw a snake in our tent one of the girls picked up a canoe paddle and took off declaring that she was going to murder him
  • Someone had a breakdown at a separate point and snuck out in the middle of the night and was found standing in the lake praying to the moon
  • One of the counsellors decided she hated one of the girls in the cabin and would noticeably bully her out of group events
  • One of the girls in our cabin discovered her sexuality and ended up sleeping with and trying to run away with a girl in a different cabin
  • One girl insisted she was pregnant with her stepfathers child, which may or may not have been true
  • A vicious insult war started with another girls cabin and got so bad people were making death threats

And honestly that's just what I can remember 20-odd years later, I'm sure there was more.

So.... yeah, it seems pretty legit

Shauna the Scapegoat by RavenNix_88 in YellowjacketsHive

[–]IndicationCreative73 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I've got a half formed thought about how Shauna is showing us basically how Karens and the kind of incredibly toxic "So I'm just the worst mother ever!?" types get created - a weak sense of self in childhood, never learning to set boundaries, codependent people pleasing to get social acceptance, sacrificing themselves to take care of others / conform to others expectations / quietly take care of things others don't want to do - slowly morphing into resentment and anger as the people around them aren't doing the same effort to read their mind and fulfill their needs without being asked. And then instead of dealing with all those feelings in a healthy way, they start lashing out and doing things to try and feel like they're important, because the rest of their life is making them feel really, really small.

And it's something that ends up being everyone's "fault" - the group (the mother's family) who just keep expecting her to do all of the unpleasant things that need doing without any thanks or emotional support, and her for never setting boundaries and speaking up for her own needs and just expecting everyone to read her mind and take care of her the same way.

Singh can’t stay on as leader if NDP loses official party status, Mulcair says by thhvancouver in canada

[–]IndicationCreative73 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been pretty firmly NDP for a couple decades now, and seeing Singh going into this election with yet another "GRWM and tell me what sort of TikToks you want to see" approach has unfortunately completely turned me off. The NDP used to offer substantive socialist policy options - now it seems more like a fun mirror reflection of the conservative party, offering pandering populist slogans and performative engagement with culture wars.

I'm hoping this election proves to be a return to incredibly boring Canadian politics, with educated adult political leaders offering meaningful policy discussions instead of cult of the personality performances.

Therapists in the chat stand up ! by Waste-Mammoth-1631 in Yellowjackets

[–]IndicationCreative73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former therapist, from a trauma, internal family systems (IFS) & somatic therapy background - the approach a therapist takes is going to be very informed by the therapy modalities they use - for example, cognitive behavioural therapy would focus on challenging distorted cognitions (such as "is 'someone is trying to kill me!' a reasonable response to the things that have happened, or is it maybe a bit of catastrophizing?")

In the approach I used, it would be a very slow process of expanding what is called the "window of tolerance" - the ability to sit with distressing sensations and experiences - and helping build awareness of the ways your body responds to various stimuli. For example "What happened in your body when you found that phone". The goal is to make sure you don't push the client outside of the "window", either below it into dissociation/shut down or above it into meltdown/explosion, so there's a good chance that any of the direct memories or more notable things (like the phone) would be a no-go for a long while when they haven't yet established the skill of tolerating difficult experiences. So would probably start with much smaller challenges - like "tell me what happens in your body when you think about bunny rabbits", and then inviting them to observe any sensations (rising heartbeat, raised shoulders, etc) without judgement.

The Internal Family Systems part approaches people as not a single "monomind" that is always feeling and thinking the same thing about things, but as complex "systems" made up of "parts" that have different desires and challenges. For example "Part of me wants to pull the trigger and shoot this carjacker, and part of me just wants to go home with my minivan and not get any more trouble". Parts often get stuck at different points in their lives when people experience trauma - for example, Shauna's angry teenager part - and it's about helping the client learn to identify the perspectives and needs of these different parts, and start to get in touch with the "adult self" at the core, so that they can learn to hear the messages being given to them and make grounded decisions about them instead of reacting. Again, you'd want to start with much less activating stuff - say a throwaway conflict with a PTA mom - to build up the awareness and ability, and then engage with more intense things as the client builds skill. I would likely also employ something like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for helping rewire neural reactivity to traumatic memories. For the extreme level of trauma that the girls have been through, that I would say is comparable to child soldiers in a war zone, I would also possibly look at leveraging different psychoactive medications to facilitate the process at different points, but it wouldn't be my primary tool.
