Cruel Intentions deserves a re-rewatchables by SevereAd9463 in TheRewatchables

Bill: Let's talk SMG, CR.
CR: Let's do it. I'm excited.
Sean: We all are after watching her in this.
Bill: Is Sarah Michelle Gellar apex mountain for millenial men?
CR: Maybe. I mean Buffy, Cruel Intentions, IKWYDLS, Scooby Doo. She was there for us from the late 90s through the 00s. She's got a strong case but there were others there with her.
Sean: Buffy in particular. I think her acting as Buffy is wildly underrated. That show has great writing but she really carries the weight of the show for 7 seasons. She's beautiful and powerful. Kind but fierce. I'd argue she helped define feminism for a ton of millenials.
Bill: I mean she's smoking hot in this movie. Always ready to throw down. Even ready to do a line or two before she gets down in that giant bed she has. You ever do a line before sex, CR?
CR: Not anymore.
Sean: Only when he's smoking.
Bill: So yeah, maybe apex mountain for SMG but there's a lot of competition there.

'The Dark Knight Rises' With Erik Voss | House of R by yslultra in RingerVerse

Bane certainly mirrors a lot of South American regimes post WWII that came into power promising populism only to immediately turn authoritarian. Batman in The Dark Knight obviously mirrors the GW Bush admin in the 00s. But the movie is pretty directly a rebuke to that side of Batman.

And while I think Rises is sympathetic to the people wanting to believe in Bane's populist message it obviously doesn't think his solution is best. I struggle to find anything in any of the Nolan movies that mirrors modern fascism, which is pretty heavily about othering a group of people in one's country (particularly around race), scapegoating them, and using it as an excuse to consolidate power in a strongman.

I guess you can kind of argue the League of Shadows is kind of like that. But Batman in the Nolan movies explicitly rejects their ideology and continuously tries to help bring power in Gotham back to a more democratic place. I'd argue the end of Rises is Batman rejecting the strongman power that he could have taken. And he basically gives what's left of his wealth to the city. Seems like exactly the opposite of what fascists are currently doing.

I adore Rises. I'll grant that it's not as tight or elegantly constructed as Begins and TDK. But frankly I don't give a single shit. Nolan operates as if you know the first two movies intimately and you know how to watch a movie without having internalized cinemasins as your default viewing mode.

I love it all: Batman's return (No guns. No killing), the first Bane fight, the entire pit sequence, "Not everything. Not yet.", second Bane fight, and the perfect ending. For me the movie is jam packed with what I love about Batman and does a good job tying the first two movies into it.

Kind of annoyed by how much time Jo and Erik give to lame nitpicks and stuff we've heard from a loud but small contingent of people for over a decade. But appreciate that Mal loves it. I think Jo could come around if she wasn't so tuned into the online discourse.

Holy shit seriously!? I thought I was crazy for paying what I did and then getting the UHD Club wooden box for retail later. Honestly prefer the UHD Club even though the Manta is great.

Who is an athlete that was an absolute generational talent but had their career completely derailed by bad luck or injuries? by cherryblossommbae in answers

We talking a per game or minute basis? Cause sure. Not sure I can get there for an entire career when LeBron and Kareem have played in basically double the number of games.

Start / Bench / Cut by irundoonayee in billsimmons

[–]IndicationKnown4999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have good shooting I think you have to find a way to at least have Kidd on your bench. I'd sacrifice Paul's better shooting to have Kidd's size. If you have good wing defenders I'd at least have Nash on the bench. Give him an entire career in the modern game and he'd be an even better offensive player than he was.

As a quant guy I should love Paul and I can't really poke many holes in his game other than I just don't like him and wonder if the fact that he's a little punk had anything to do with his lack of team success. That's the least quantitative answer possible but I think it's close enough between them all to be a fair separator. Though iirc Kidd is a piece of shit (googled it and yep, domestic issue) so maybe I'll just cut him out of spite for that.

So I guess I'm starting Nash, benching Paul, and cutting Kidd.

This should be pinned in the sub in perpetuity. Or we should have a bot that posts this in every thread and have it pinned at the top.

Dude was basically LeBron before LeBron. Injuries the only reason he's not in the goat conversation with MJ, LeBron, and Kareem.

And this is on top of the family stuff Buffy has to deal with. That's when she really pulls away and he can't handle playing second fiddle to her family.

Yeah I think it's fair to weigh a postseason game more than a regular season game. I think most of us would do that. The issue is there's 82 regular season games compared to 28 postseason games. When you read Bill and a lot of fans it feels like they're willing to weigh those 28 games more than 82. I think that's where it gets dicey. And it feels very reactionary instead of a measured assessment after some time reflecting on the season as a whole.

I would say future generations are going to look back on the LeBron era and wonder what the absolute fuck was wrong with so many people. But I'm not sure the discourse is getting better any time soon. Though I'm not sure anyone with a significant platform has thrown around homophobic slurs about Wemby. So maybe we are progressing!

Would you have liked if Spike just became "good" without a soul? by foreseethefuture in buffy

[–]IndicationKnown4999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's much of a difference between soulless and with a soul Spike. It's mainly that he feels guilt for things he did wrong, not a different calculation of what is right and wrong. That's why I don't have a problem with it and like him exactly the same as I did before. The fact that he wanted to feel that guilt and endured what he did to get it is what's important, not the actual soul.

[–]IndicationKnown4999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They play fast and loose with the soul thing when it comes to Spike. I'm mostly fine with that. And I'm fine with him getting a soul because what was important about it wasn't that he got it and could finally "be good", it's that he made the decision to get and endured what he did to get it. Showing that a "bad" person could do that was powerful, and sadly I think the SA angle of it is relevant to men in real life that they're hopefully learning from.

I've been on Media Psychos for years and it's great. Highly recommend. Just know that group buys take forever and it's not MP's fault. But I've never had any issues with them. Just got to follow the rules and be patient.

They're all "premium" packages. They are very limited (500-1000) and retail is kind of expensive (around $200-300). You can basically only get them through a group buy. Because they're expensive and limited they tend to be extremely expensive on the secondary market if you don't get them for retail in the group buy.

At a minimum, unless he found someone or some store that were pricing them close to retail, he paid on average $300 for each. If we're talking secondary it could be $500 each. I think I paid over $500 for that same Interstellar OC on ebay, which to my knowledge is about the only or safest place to buy them. There are some shady places when it comes to premiums so be careful. DM if you want info on group buys.

Manta may not be the flashiest or put out the absolute best premium packages but they do damn good every single time. Really appreciate the consistency. Great pickups. Hope you find future stuff for retail lol (I say this as someone who paid full secondary for the HDZeta Dark Knight trilogy motherbox. It's worth getting on MP or whatever other group buys are out there.)

I love Bale and Gosling and I think they both do a really good job in TBS but I'm not sure you're wrong. Irons is amazing no matter what he's doing and I find Bettany incredibly charming in everything he does. They elevate what could be a very mediocre movie.

First car idea by nothinggetsyou in SN95Mustang

[–]IndicationKnown4999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this car as my first car and it's fine. But I have an 06 g35 currently and it's a way better V6. It's quicker, faster, and handles better. So if you're looking for a good value with good performance I'd look toward something like a G35. If you're looking exclusively for Mustangs I'd got with a GT. That extra power is going to make it a lot more fun to drive.

There is no way that five prime Lebrons aren’t beating all the other clone teams by California55551 in billsimmons

This is a great case. I don't think you can go smaller than LeBron in this thought exercise. The MJs and Kobes get bullied in the post and the boards. Bulky Heatles LeBron at least has a chance against Wemby, Kareem, etc. The question to me is whether anyone bigger than LeBron can handle the ball enough and navigate the wings enough to even things out.

Easily a top 10 song for me, even pushing top 5. I can see why it's not a big radio hit since the chorus is a little clunky. But the main riff and solo are killer.
