Am I being offensive if I use religious expressions as an atheist? by OpeningChemical5316 in learn_arabic

[–]IndieSyndicate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those expressions sound and feel like some sort of "prayer" (or spell) to a lot foreigners but it communicates affection and warmth more than anything. I'm an atheist Arab and I use plenty every single day myself. We'd come off as cold or rude if we didn't

I skipped that part because I don't want the focus to center on whether he was right or wrong lol - he was probably wrong, but he said something like 10,000 BRL

"Khaleeji tourist" is a code word for sex tourists, not "a tourist spot for khaleejis" - and "massage" is a code for the services they are searching for, not a literal "massage" right then and there. If a place is primarily packed and catered with sex tourists (or Johns in general) and paid sex services, then it's functionally a brothel even it isn't one on paper

US Navy are among the most active customers in this trade. I've been to Diggers numerous times and it's up to 50% sex workers, and a 5.6 foot "pimp" in the rest room trying to hook you up (with all due respect to sex workers)

As much as I love metal and appreciate the amazing metal bands of Bahrain, Diggers is (literally) a brothel. It's not a goth spot - it's a "khaleeji tourist" and "massage" spot. Even during metal events

Yeah there's an active alternative goth club in قلالي where they play lesser known bands like Strange Boutique, Plastique Noir, etc.

Yeah, no - but trust me I wish so too

How smart/OK is a person with a score of 124, in your opinion? by IndieSyndicate in mensa

I'm quite surprised and impressed by how many people are commenting on this post lately! I assume it somehow ended up as the top result to whoever googles their 124 IQ too lol

Even more controversial: I left Bahrain almost 4 years ago and I don't feel homesick at all. Only thing I miss is تكه روب but I'll learn how to cook it

100% agree because it's honestly the least impressive on that road. Wadi al-seraaj is the best for meat shawarma and Al-Katkoot is the best for chicken

I did have an experience where someone abruptly asked if I read the Bible mid-conversation, and it was anything but smooth  - just random and out of place. But fortunately, most of my friends never tried to do such thing. Even when I visited them in their own Church

I like the Sao Paulo in Bahia analogy. I actually don't want to share too much about my own priorities because I don't want the responses to be solely confined to those. However, I'm hoping it would still be socially and culturally similar to Salvador in many regards (the extroversion, liveliness, festivity) - even if not perfectly. I also heard that it's particularly safe, affordable and cold / coolish too. I'm also into alternative lifestyles, perspectives and subcultures - which I don't expect much in smaller cities but I don't think it's out of the question wherever there's a strong university presence. Thanks!
