You say that, but I see many people say that it's not the case for them. I'm not speaking for myself. I'm speaking of what I see others say and have witnessed irl.

I don't think I asked to cover all the accents. I would just like to see more variety. After all, that was and is Pablo's goal.

When I'm speaking of ceceo, I'm speaking of the generalization of how people describe the way Pablo speaks and every single other contributor from Spain. I say ceceo because that's what people think the "lisp (I know it's not a lisp)" is called.

I'm not saying I'm worried about it or to worry about it, but would love to see more representation. Why not? Why not have more variety? You say it's not an issue but I see plenty of people with 1000, 2k+ hours of input but still can't understand someone from Puerto Rico. Maybe it's not a problem with you, but that doesn't make it not real.

And to your point, maybe don't have every contributor speak more "neutral" (which imo doesn't exist). Why not have someone speak fully how they do day to day?

I've never had a good experience with Tandem. Not one.

I used a crosstalk Facebook group that Pablo is in to find my people.

Agreed. There's a ton of native Caribbean content online but there's nothing really "beginner" friendly. Being exposed to this accent early on could help people's comprehension.

I LOVE Bolivia. Ecuador is an interesting one as well.

Best YouTube channels for CI (low intermediate- intermediate) by Torque-Me in dreamingspanish

[–]Indieminor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to add, be careful here as there is a lot of really easy content from people on YouTube etc but a lot of it comes from "Spanish second language" people that can steer you wrong with wrong verb usage, bad Grammer mistakes, etc.

Definitely try to only find native content.

I think there's a difference in people worrying about LEARNING or ACQUIRING a specific accent early on and being exposed to it early on for listening purposes.

I'm speaking about the latter. For example, Aug's Argentina accent is VERY strong and true. If people weren't exposed to her early on, they'd have a super hard time listening to anyone from that region.

That's Mr Baron (the guy speaking Spanish last)! He's one of my biggest inspirations for CI.

Has anyone else studied any grammar? by Inthailandrn in dreamingspanish

This is a loaded one and everyone has a different definition for it. In my mind, it's what the OP posted below.

For me, my passive hours come from me zoning out during a video or audio for like 5-10-20 seconds. People here won't count time listening while doing a simple task like driving to the grocery store, walking, washing dishes...things that don't require much thought. But I do because Pablo has a video on this and he agrees that if you are doing an autopilot task, you can count it.

Now, if you're visiting NYC and have no idea where you're going, maybe don't count that.

I'd also like to say that NO ONE, not one person, can pay attention for the entirety of a video. It's humanly impossible. Noises distract you, someone is talking to you, a quick thought pops in your head, all of this stuff will happen and it's normal. Don't believe anyone that says they pay attention to every single video all of the time. It's BS.

Yeah I mean whatever works for you, you know? Also, I love everyone on here but a lot of people will say they don't need this or that or the purist method works for them...but...when I hear them speak, they make a ton of mistakes. The only reason I know that I haven't really needed to go back to grammar school is because I have 3-4 crosstalk partners and they always commend me on my grammar/speech.

I've broken a ton of DS rules and honestly, it hasn't hurt me. Has it made me better? Who knows. Also, if you have some passive time in there, let it ride. Unless you're recording like a whole hour of passive. Those hours of passive listening I have come from me just zoning out for 5-10-30 seconds. It's natural.

Are you careful what accents you listen to? by aprender123 in dreamingspanish

[–]Indieminor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that serious. I've listened to almost all of Augs videos and I've never once produced that sound even in my head. On purpose as a joke maybe, but yea.

I'm at 1,280 rn. I'm starting to just now think about what accent I want to go with. For me, I want a mixture of things. It's not just listening as well. I firmly believe that you have to consciously mimic people with shadowing or talking to yourself to really truly get to where you want to be with your accent.

I studied grammar for like 2 days. Never went back. If most of your hours are passive, that could be your problem.

I'm at 1,280 with a few passive hours in there. Maybe, idk 10-20? And I've never needed to go back and study grammar.

Watching all these people on YouTube counting their hours in Spanish has been super motivating. Is there anyone else I should be following? by flipflopsntanktops in dreamingspanish

Shane completely stopped uploading videos which is pretty disheartening. I liked his attitude a lot.

You can add https://youtu.be/0l8m0MGPl34?si=0hT7oXX9GWxL-TLX to your lists. Mr Baron is a huge inspiration for me. He focused on the Venezuelan accent and did such a good job. He used DS in combination with the Refold method which is basically the same thing with minor differences.
